Butler, Tue., Jan. 2, 8:30p, FS-1

I suspect the plan was always to start Luis over Taylor. Where things got murky is that Dunlap was going to play for Ledlum, and when Ledlum was good to go Pitino started Dunlap anyway - and then rode the hot hand.

I also think that Pitino enjoys having some wrinkle for league opponents that they haven't scouted or prepared for - the zone against X, Dunlap against Butler.

Don't think it was disciplinary or anything other than that, and Pitino knows Taylor is a team player who wouldn't take it wrong.

Having said that I hope he balances the PT out and regularizes it more going forward.

Along these lines, the only thing I could come up with is that Pitino let Taylor know he essentially needed him to sit this game out for the most part, as part of his development for one of his teammates. And Taylor being the great teammate he is, received the message well and continued to cheer on his teammates. Admittedly I'm not sure I've ever heard or anything like this, but that's all I could come up with.

Not to rain on everyone's parade, but after last night's game, we now not only have to worry about Luis bolting for the NBA at the end of the season, we also have to worry about Dunlap! In anticipation, word has it that rhe NBA is already talking about replacing Jerry West with Brady Dunlap on its logo.

I also wonder if we will see RJ Luis play some at the 2-guard spot, so 2 of Taylor/Dunlap/Ledlum can be on the floor at the same time. That would be a monster big lineup for most college teams to face.

Just watched this whole thing. The name “Glenn Taylor” was never uttered during this press conference. Fascinating. It’s something that every St. John’s fan during the game was wondering, and yet a journalist couldn’t ask a very simple question.

Braziller tweeted at me last night that Dunlap took Taylor’s minutes. Rick never said that. In fact, braziller literally put the words in ricks mouth by asking “hey Rick was it just that brady had a great week in practice?” why ask a question if you're just going to answer it yourself

And even if Brady had a great week in practice, it’s still a valid question to ask why he got all of Taylor’s minutes, and not an assortment of Taylor/Ledlum/Luis minutes. (Especially with Ledlum not at 100%)

Sigh

It’s not that I really care anymore or that I think it was a bad move (we won handily so that’s not the issue) its just fascinating that no one in that room had the balls to ask about what happened to Taylor tonight. Instead we get questions like “hey Rick you’re 2-1 in big east, are you encouraged?”
I understand asking the question if you are a reporter. With that said, I bet dunlap had a good week and it was at the expense of Taylor. The good week of practice and him showing well in the game from the onset made the decision easy. We criticized coaches in past for not making adjustments. I think Rick saw what he liked in Dunlap and rewarded him. he made an adjustment/decision to reward him and help the team in that particular moment/game.

On Taylor like situations, with Pitino expect the unexpected, but concur w LMF hope he “regularizes”, balances PT more going forward. A smart guy on here texted me last night noting “Rick will always do what he wants to”, so it pays to expect some curve balls.

That was Fox’s choice.so glad we didn’t because I think it is dumb when the pros do it (the Nets for KD is an example) and would have been the same here. He is not a legend or all time great. We get visits from other players who had better careers and actually finished their career here and rarely do it for them so why should we do it for someone who not only left but went to a conference rival? Save the applauds for someone like the active Army Officer who graduated from St. John‘s and was honored during the timeout. Him I applauded.

Posh got a nice round of applause when he was introduced, that was more than enough recognition. In the second half he was booed every time he touched the ball.

He was booed because many in the crowd saw and heard him talking $hit to the StJohns bench some of which was directed at Coach Pitino. The boos were certainly deserved….. again, he is not a Johnny anymore, he is the enemy. Deal with it.

If you're gonna talk $hit, which is fine by me, you had better be able to back it up.

One who hope that with last nights game the Criticism of Jenkins would cease and desist .

But , that is too much to hope for , I think .

RP has blessed Daniss with being the Coach on the floor . It’s not going to change , if some Tom , Dick or Harry , continue the barrage of negative comments .
I’ve used those names so as not to identify the most vocal of Jenkins detractors .

Jenkins had check marks in all the boxes last night .

But , I recall the barrage directed at Ponds just a few short years ago . At a Player who arguably was our best for the last 20 years .

Playing PG in the BE , which is not his natural position , should cut him some slack .

And , as the post game Analysts commented , Jenkins and Luis are the only 2 players who can consistently get penetration off the dribble .

So, those who are paid to comment , don’t share the view that Jenkins isnt a very positive and important part of Pitino’s team .

My point is we shouldn't have to be sitting here right now speculating about what happened.

Rick Pitino sat down in front of a microphone after a game, and not a single reporter in the room asked why a guy who has started every game and is averaging 22MPG got reduced to 8 seconds tonight. Thats just baffling to me. Even if the explanation is quick and harmless, he should have still been asked the question.

Cause I'll only speak for myself, but I would have been interested in hearing Rick discuss what went into that decision. If it was something he discussed with Taylor before the game, that would've been cool to hear. I have never heard of a starter willingly sacrifice all of their minutes because a freshman had a good week in practice. So if that is the case, would have been nice to hear it from the coach himself.

It's just a shame because Rick does not hold back and is one of the most honest/authentic coaches I've ever seen. If something happened, he would 100% talk about it, but you gotta ask him the question first.

I think there's a misinterpretation about the criticism of Jenkins. Primary for me is that he usually is one dribble too many to take advantage of the pass for the easy shot. He's been great at drive and dish to bigs but not always drive and dish for open mid range or 3s, or to get the ball to the guy that gets the ball to the guy. Court vision issue? And no one can argue about whether he should be taking as many 3s as he is. Of those who have taken 1 or more per game only Conway is worse (they're stats are both really bad here), and this team hasn't exactly been lighting it up as a team. So improve the the shot selection or shoot better please. He is playing very well and I'm glad to have him but with a couple tweaks he could be great.
