Butler, Tue., Jan. 2, 8:30p, FS-1

My point is we shouldn't have to be sitting here right now speculating about what happened.

Rick Pitino sat down in front of a microphone after a game, and not a single reporter in the room asked why a guy who has started every game and is averaging 22MPG got reduced to 8 seconds tonight. Thats just baffling to me. Even if the explanation is quick and harmless, he should have still been asked the question.

Cause I'll only speak for myself, but I would have been interested in hearing Rick discuss what went into that decision. If it was something he discussed with Taylor before the game, that would've been cool to here. I have never heard of a starter willingly sacrifice all of their minutes because a freshman had a good week in practice. So if that is the case, would have been nice to hear it from the coach himself.

It's just a shame because Rick does not hold back and is one of the most honest/authentic coaches I've ever seen. If something happened, he would 100% talk about it, but you gotta ask him the question first.
Totally agree.

A few games ago I said that Jenkins' flaws were correctable and if he could play more under control, he could be a force. The last couple of games he has played much more under control and has been a force. Hopefully he just gets better and better as the seaon progresses.

He has the size, athleticism and skill sets to be an excellent basketball player. Having said that , I would like him taking a few less 3s per game. Preferably only when he's wide open and his feet are set.
This is what bothers me with Jenkins. He has that pull-up elbow jumper where he is nearly automatic. He is a slashing wing that can pass well. Do that! Why are you shooting treys when you are a 24% career shooter in 3 seasons outside of the MAAC? Get to the goddamn basket. Try to draw fouls and even if you miss, it will open up second chance opportunities for the best group of offensive rebounders in the country.

He has the same left hand as Captain Hook but has some crafty over-35 YMCA techniques to hide it. Last night was the first time I’ve seen anyone overplay his right side and it was only sparingly since they switched everything.

“Captain Hook” 😂

Great attendance last night for a late Wednesday night game on Jan 2nd.

Was only able to stay for the 1H with one of the kids - but the guys looked good. RJs reverse on the baseline was jaw dropping... NBA does draft on potential... hopefully he has the right people in his ear - He'll test the waters this spring... here's to hoping once more (healthy) year under Pitino/NIL is enough to convince him the stay.

Let's get that Dub at Nova!

I am getting a bit misty eyed. That was the nicest thing you ever said (about Jenkins).

I think there's a misinterpretation about the criticism of Jenkins. Primary for me is that he usually is one dribble too many to take advantage of the pass for the easy shot. He's been great at drive and dish to bigs but not always drive and dish for open mid range or 3s, or to get the ball to the guy that gets the ball to the guy. Court vision issue? And no one can argue about whether he should be taking as many 3s as he is. Of those who have taken 1 or more per game only Conway is worse (they're stats are both really bad here), and this team hasn't exactly been lighting it up as a team. So improve the the shot selection or shoot better please. He is playing very well and I'm glad to have him but with a couple tweaks he could be great.
How you feel about Jenkins depends on your view of what a point guard should be.

If, like me and Marillac among others, you want your PG to be a pass-first player who gets his teammates the ball in spots that work for them and whose focus is on making the players around him better, then Jenkins is not what you're looking for at that spot.

If you want your PG to be a scorer himself who can also create for others when the opportunity presents, then you probably like Jenkins just fine.

At the end of the day he is a productive player who is very ball-dominant and at times tries to do too much himself. To Austor's point he is a good 3 point shooter when he is open and his feet are set, but he takes to many 3s that don't fit that description; also his dribble-drive to the right elbow for a pull-up jumper is predictable and will get shut down by well-coached teams, and some of his drives to the hoop are ill-advised and don't result in the passes that should be made when and where they should go. And all of that comes at the expense of getting the ball to other players.

But in his defense he isn't really a point guard and has been thrust into the position because (a) Pitino has a comfort level with him; and (b) Wilcher is not ready.

In related news:

1. Posh played last night.
2. Glenn Taylor did not play last night.
3. It was hot at Carnesecca Arena.

Also the sky is blue and DePaul stinks.

One who hope that with last nights game the Criticism of Jenkins would cease and desist .

But , that is too much to hope for , I think .

RP has blessed Daniss with being the Coach on the floor . It’s not going to change , if some Tom , Dick or Harry , continue the barrage of negative comments .
I’ve used those names so as not to identify the most vocal of Jenkins detractors .

Jenkins had check marks in all the boxes last night .

But , I recall the barrage directed at Ponds just a few short years ago . At a Player who arguably was our best for the last 20 years .

Playing PG in the BE , which is not his natural position , should cut him some slack .

And , as the post game Analysts commented , Jenkins and Luis are the only 2 players who can consistently get penetration off the dribble .

So, those who are paid to comment , don’t share the view that Jenkins isnt a very positive and important part of Pitino’s team .
Please never mention Jenkins and Ponds together. Who ever disparaged Ponds?! He was incredible for us. This wouldbe a Sweet 16 team with him.

Jenkins has no awareness. Not only is he a poor shooter, he is surrounded by better shooters. Ledlum is shooting 36%, Soriano 78%, Taylor 43%. Literally everyone is better. Alleyne is 38%. Conway, Dunlap, Traore, Wilcher…all better.

So why is he pulling up off the dribble 3 seconds into the shot clock when he’s 1-4 on the night and 24% for the season and his career from 3 outside of the MAAC? He shot 24.6% as a frosh and 23.3% as a soph from 3 in the WCC. His soph year the WCC was loaded with BYU, Gonzaga, St, Mary’s etc. and he has a similar strength of schedule to what we have thus far (+5.23 compared to +5.98 this year). He had a negative SOS at Iona (-2.76) obviously.

He’s not going to get better…and he doesn’t have to. He just has to realize his weaknesses at this level.

There a reason why Pitino only praises guys like Jenkins, Traore, and Zuby while strongly criticizing Soriano and Luis when they mess up.

Jenkins is the basically the same caliber shooter as Taylor yet one is shooting 43% while the other is shooting 24%. Why is that? Have your ever seen Taylor take a bad shot? I honestly can’t remember one. Jenkins takes 3-4 terrible shots a game and he usually airball barely hits glass once.

There fixed it for you ;)

Just when Marillac took one step forward and started showing cracks in the Jenkins armor, Slyfoxx has to bring up Ponds and ruin everything.

Slyfoxx, please stick to your main duties here as my deputy short paragraph law enforcer. 😉😃

Styles make fights and the biggest issue SJU has had all year is stopping the ball. As the Butler point guard has no real jump shot there is no reason to pick him up high, and I can't remember a blow by happening the entire game. That really helped. Now, relax fanboys, I'm not saying that means the Butler point guard is terrible, but he does have flaws and that flaw fit us well.

Matta also had a player in the low post on offense at all times which allowed Soriano to rarely have to venture outside where he struggles greatly. I saw that the Butler point guard took another shot at a coach who coached him to defensive player of the year as a freshman, something about film work. Based on the Butler game plan they must have been watching "Wonka" all week.
