Butler, Sat., Jan. 4 , 2p, FS-1

How ? We had Kadary inbounding
On an inbounds play at the very end yes, but Kadary has no value if he is not going to handle the ball and if we are ahead towards the end he will be a foul target and he will more than likely miss. Try to think of a good team whether college or NBA where one of their two main ball handlers shot 50% or less from the foul line. I'm sure there's one or two but I can't think of any.

It’s sportsmanship to dribble out the clock when you have won the game however it’s is incumbent on the other team to run back on D and at least appear to guard the basket. If Butler does not have enough self respect to run back on D at all while 3 St John’s players are on the offensive side of the court then whatever SJ does is fair game.
No it's not incumbent on the losing team to run back and play D and at least appear to guard the basket. This has nothing to do with Butler's self respect because they already got beat by double digits. It has everything to do with Wilcher hot dogging it at the end of the game after he shot a woeful 1 for 8 with 0 for 3 from the three point line.

Kadary won us the game today with his play huge baskets in crunch time and made big plays on defense with those steals. Without those we do probably lose today. However I was screaming at the tv when Smith gave up the ball with about 1:22 left and 22 seconds on shot clock in a 6pt game to Kadary. Smith should have held the ball to see if they would foul him and if not then run the play with under 10 to go.

they just watched Kadary go 1/2 on a lucky bounce and Smith was perfect for the day he needs to hold the ball there in a two possession game .

Eh, leave my guy Sim alone. He is a wonderful kid who plays the game and supports his teammates with absolute joy. I love the kid.

I agree it is a teachable moment for him but it absolutely was not meant to show the other team up or be a hotdog play. It was just an expression of basketball joy at winning a game after a tough slog.

Do I want him to do it? No. But let's not overreact and also understand the kind of person we are talking about. Simeon is an A+ person. Not immune from mistakes. But a pure heart.

Too much fuss about nothing imho

I will second that, a mistake for sure but he is a great kid.

Kadary was Kadary in crunch time. That's who he is. Hope he becomes comfortable being that guy more often
He played great down the stretch but the foul shooting problem is a big issue going forward.

Agree

At some point in this season SJU will realize that thee point shooting is not a strong part of their game and the biggest supporter of their three point attempts is the opposition. Some attempts, with the clock running down cannot e eliminated but other than one or two players on this roster having wide open looks the better strategy for this group is to work the ball for a better shot from two point range where they shoot something like 55 per cent.
All the players know the NBA loves the three point shot so it is a difficult job for a coach to control those attempts but I believe SJU has lowered the number of attempts but somebody posted they are six for 48 in big east play.Pitino stresses three point defense but he must realize no big east team practices three point defense when preparing for SJU.

Paultz favorite player Bobby Kelly shot 49% as a junior.

true…but assuming all 5 should have hit…6 of 23 would have elevated us to just bad shooting.
I hope you’re right that the law of averages will work its magic….we’ll be due to see 40% shooting for several games.
6 for 23 and we win this game by 20 pts

The criticism of Kadary has been warranted. But how about giving credit where credit is due.

Butler up 52-51 6:50 left; Telfort drives to middle of the lane and Kadary comes up with the strip steal.

Tied 55-55 4:48 left; Kadary running point against zone zips pass to cutting RJ for dunk. SJU 57-55

SJU 57-55 4:24 left; Kadary defensive rebound
With 4:16 left; Butler backcourt pass stolen by Kadary and he converts driving layup. SJU 59-55

SJU 59-58 3:12 left; Kadary defensive rebound
With 2:50 left, Kadary drives lane for layup. SJU 61-58.

SJU 63-58 1:46 left; Kadary strip/steal against a driving McCaffrey. Eventually fouled on other end , hits 1 of 2 FTs. SJU 64-58.

Took over the game in crunch time. Obviously 1-4 from the line is a major issue and his performance to date has not been game changing. But today he did what needed to be done to get a win.

A lot of conjecture over things like body language and potential rifts. Can only speak on what is happening on the court:
1. We are in poor form the last 3 conference games and still are sitting here 12-3 (3-1). Not 10-5 or 9-6 gents.
2. Kim English threw a slight at us about rebounding and turnovers being our only strength. JFC we all wanted to bash him but he was 1000% right.
3. Pitino’s tendency to rotate players almost mindlessly is hurting us. He did the same thing last year and we finally found a rotation in the final 6-7 games when we came on strong.
4. Offensively we are so robotic. Instead of getting consistent paint touches through entry passes our offense is a few ball reversals and then 1 on 5 dribbling into a pull-up long 2 or contested layup. Move the ball WITH PURPOSE and we will create better offensive looks. Right now our only effective offense is run outs from creating turnovers.
