Butler, Sat., Jan. 4 , 2p, FS-1

Really rough watch today, but I think we are better than this. This team plays really solid defense and rebounds well. I think the shooting will come.

The majority of this year we've seen the main guys show a very good 15 foot shot. That seems to be missing the last two games, which is a bigger reason they've struggled on offense. They also seem to be missing good looks from behind the arc. Maybe a confidence thing that can resolve itself with one good night. These guys are not going to finish the year shooting under 20% from three (fingers crossed).
As even eternal optimist Tarik Turner noted, they were all wide open looks.
Look Wilcher is our best hope, his shot is sound, just missing right now.
Glover injured or not is not going to get an opportunity.
Luis and Smith if open and feet set will hit a few but will never be good three point shooters.
Richmond should never, ever, ever attempt a three pointer.
Not sure where the improvement would come from.

Really thought Scott had potential to surprise from outside this year.

Folks have mentioned that Kadary has a patella problem. At half time as team was warming up, Kadary left the lay up line so that one of the trainers could put ointment on his knees. It may be this is impacting him more than we know. Remember RJ's shin splints and the difference in his game last year versus this year. Just saying maybe we should not so quick to judge him.

Yeah because Richmond reminds me of Gary Payton on D.
Seriously if you are Glover how could u take that seriously, considering you have a player that seems to have a free pass from playing hard???
Seriously, Glover could not cover my aunt on defense, and she dies a decade ago. He is not ready. Let him prove he is ready in practice. You think Pitino does not want to win? It’s not about Glover scoring two threes. It’s about winning. Kadary won this game today in crunch time. Steals, rebounds, assists, etc. so also check how many zeros Glover has next to his name in every game he has played.

Just watched a recording of the game. Terrible win but a win is a win….. though lots of obvious concerns. Should have been a 20+ point win. A few observations.

I don’t think the thing to do here is run away from shooting threes. We have to find a solution. I actually saw a good handful of open threes we could have taken that we took 1-2 steps in and shot an 18 footer. I think we may have hit them but they would have been higher percentage threes as well. We’re not going to be a great shooting team but we will be way too 1 dimensional if we don’t keep shooting. The team seems to be thinking about whether they should shoot the three instead of just shooting when open.

RJ had a couple of plays where he landed pretty tenderly. Hope he’s not seeing more issues from his shin splints. Nice bounce back but still want to see him moving the ball more and letting the game come to him.

We played the first half like Kalkbrenner was still in the lane. Seemed a little of a hangover there. Deivon broke that toward end of the first half and started going to the rim hard. Overall I think he’s been the best addition to the team so far this year.

Love Zuby. All heart. All motor. Most improved for sure. Seems like a great kid. Really happy for him.

If this team makes the tournament they will have over achieved. We have no business being in the tournament with our shooting percentage and FTs. This team is worse than last years team. I don’t know how Pitino put together a lesser team. This is on the coach that most posters don’t want to criticise.

He played great down the stretch but the foul shooting problem is a big issue going forward.
Try to think of a good team whether college or NBA where one of their two main ball handlers shot 50% or less from the foul line. I'm sure there's one or two but I can't think of any offhand.
Back to Maher point, here are the career college FT % of ST John’s point/ combo guards since I began watching:
Jackson 75%
Harvey 82%
Buchanon 76%
Cain 67%- really only played his Senior year
Barkley 73%
Cook 74%
Hatten 73%
Hill 74%
Geno 69%-least fav player before this season
Hardy 81%
Greene 70%- Carmine’s fav the circle
Jordan 66%
Ponds 84%
Posh 76%- and we all thought he couldn’t shoot
Jenkins 80%-Marillac fav player shot FT at at 37% clip better than KR
Smith 62%
Kadary this season 43%

Last years team also had stretches where 3 pointers seemed like a challenge. I specifically remember going to the UConn game at MSG, we were in that game at the half. But Spencer and co started drilling threes all over the place and we couldn’t answer.

Matter of fact there was also a game @Xavier where we lost a close one. Team couldn’t make any threes whatsoever. We used our home game against depaul last year to launch a bunch of 3s in a safe environment to try and get everyone going. We kind of got it together from there and ended up peaking in late Feb-March.

But overall I think it’s easy to have rose colored glasses about last years team because of how sharp they were playing at the end of the year. Around this time last year there were very similar struggles too. Let’s hope this squad can push through

I like the new offense.

My fondest memories as a Giant fan were when boring Parcells would run Otis Anderson straight ahead 3 times into the line and a cloud of dust then bring in Lendetta to punt deep so that Carson, Banks and LT could come in to win the game.

Pitino is giving us the basketball equivalent of that. I'm more comfortable with this style. Forget about hitting threes. Give me defense and ugly basketball any day of the week.

Very mature and objective statement, thank you very much for posting.
