@Butler, Sat. Jan. 27, 2:30pm, FS1/570AM

Heard Mullin never showed up at SJU Alum gathering at St. Elmo's and went swimming at
the hotel instead !

Torch and pitchfork time. Ever think why top coaches dont come here?

I'm game, why do top coaches not come here?
Lack of a swimming pool on campus so coaches have to wait to use hotel pools?
Never actually reaching out to top coaches and hiring a $2 million coaching novice to turn around the program?
Never offering a competitive salary until the hiring of Steve Lavin?
Never having an athletic director respected in the college basketball community?
Now having a bean counting president who sounds like he failed English as a Second Language?
Knowing we have sociopaths that will stalk them throughout the city especially if they eat at high end restaurants without them?
Maybe St. John's history of unceremoniously firing coaches?
Maybe having a negative track record in our coaching tree making the St. John's job a career ending possibility?

Maybe we should be concerned when a prospective donor for the university's ONLY flagship sport wonders why they didn't get to meet the Hall of Fame coach leading the program to a promising future while in Indianapolis?
My guess is that Chris Mullin will be doing a lot of hiding in plain sight going forward this season.

Why? Because if you want a sure thing, and pop for someone who has won a lot in a big time conference, you come here. And the cost of living is higher, the fan base sucks, taxes are higher, the on campus arena stinks, traffic stinks, and did I say the fan base sucks?

So you have guys on here who thought Billy Donovan woukd come here at the same or lower salary than Florida, despite a cost of living thats maybe 55% of new York in a winter climate that people run from.

A cant miss high d1 guy isn't coming here so you have to go to a mid major where the most successful guys win their conference or tourney every year. Those teams mostly dont get at large bid, so coming here become a a crap shoot in terms of consistently attracting high level talent.

But really, who would die to come to a program that hasn't had consistent success in 25 years?

And fwiw, Chris was at an alumni event on li just this Thursday, along with Bobby G, Anton, and others. In season he isn't asked to go to every event, so im.sure he wasn't scheduled to attend. Everyone wants his time i am told.

Showed up at the alumni gathering in Orlando. Stayed around after speaking to us, signed autographs and posed for pictures with the alumni. So there!

Tim Cluess is definitely a realistic candidate in the future. Will not cost much, has ties to St. John's.

Most importantly he has coaching experience and understands the game. He acts and looks the part which is important as well.

Most importantly it is about wins. Chris Mullin's current record in the big east is 8-38. Ultimately it is about winning.

JJ after dark on WFAN talked a lot of St. John's last night. Absolutely killed Mullin good to hear.

If the school is worried abou $$ they should look into what Dan Mattic has been doing on the schools dime

Are you saying the DOBO is doing something shady, wasteful or on the opposite end... nothing ?

All of what you just stated circles back to something I regretfully said in an earlier post. St. John's, with Bobby G as president is not going to move forward, either academically or in the competitive Big East because of lack of vision and commitment. Incompetent leadership is why we are in the cunundrum we are in and that has always started with the president on down to the athletic directors. The weather, the rent of an apartment, the traffic on Union Turnpike, a small 5,500 seat arena that is half filled because of ambivalent students, are ridiculous excuses for not putting in the time to search for candidates.
Chris Mullin was announced 2 freaking days after Lavin was insulted by the pious Bobby Gampesaw. Do you really expect anyone to think that we even tried to identify a half dozen candidates, let alone interview anyone, before hiring a $2 million coach-in-training, a half million dollar associate head coach with a guaranteed 6 year iron clad contract and the cost of the rest of the staff because we are financially constrained? Because I suggest if that is true then Bobby Gampesaw should be fired before Mullin for financial incompetence. Your warm weather low rent excuse goes contrary to the success of Villanova located outside of shit town Philadelphia or Providence located, well it's Providence:( Seton Hall located in a cancer belt has been more successful and made better strides academically and in sports in recent years. You ever been in Walsh Gymnasium or Georgetown's on campus gym? What about Marquette's weather and gym? Any coach who showed even the slightest success that asked for more money was run out of town. If, what you also imply, is we are a penny pinching visionless quagmire then be prepared for many many years of mediocrity.

Look, if you have ever played this game you know exactly your talent level. Hence, you came to a school in a rebuilding mode. You look at your team mates and their skills and the coach and staff and their skills. If you are realistic ,you know you will be down near the bottom of the confrence. You hope that recruiting will go well and you will continue to climb. But it you came here and thought you would be NCAA bound from day one than you were not looking at the whole picture and over estimated your skills. However, next yr with some luck the ship will right itself better talent coming in ,more experience with our present players and staff and we can rise quickly. YOU never know we could get a game and program changer recruit and then will be on our way and bad times behind us

It’s just very hard to conceive of going from 0-18 or 1-17 or God willing 2-16 to competitive and an NIT team, let alone an NCAA team in one year. It’s the relentless rebuild year after year, coach after coach, that is discouraging.

Thanks... but c'mon !!!

Can't put teaser out & leave the group hanging !!

What is it ? Likes to carry a lot of single $ bills in his pocket in case routinely he's in a place with neon lights, glitter and bad perfume?

Whatever it is. schools not aware ?

As a "generally' optimistic one
losing stinks, AND
there is legitimate reason for concern, AND
it is quite disappointing that our record and recruiting are not better

but I do like some balance in these posts AND
therefore I thank you USGuard for your measured reflections

It is imperative to enjoy 2018 as best we can
and give 2018-19 a chance

I do not hear Chris Mullin, staff and players whining or giving up and they - more so then we - are in the trenches
I can only imagine how they are suffering

Maybe our program under CM will never succeed
maybe it will
imo just too early to tell AND
we do have reinforcements on the horizon AND
a great truth right up there with the Mount Sinai tablets, gravity, E=mc2 IS (drumroll):

MOST WORTHWHILE THINGS TAKE TIME

especially
let's not forget circa April 2015 when we were starting from scratch
again losing stinks
having Navy beat my alma mater for decades coupled with SJU crappy for the same decades
it stinks
as does our current situation
but hope is a definite choice in this matter
and we will be better 2018-19 (granted how much better is an unknown, maybe surprisingly better)

waiting is a virtue spoken about in all great treatises and texts
(e.g. Titus Maccius Plautus - 254-184 BC - patience is the best remedy for every trouble ***)
And so my fellow Americans (lol)
I am willing to wait
all the best

*** Titus must have been a West Point/Army and St.Johns/Redmen fan

Tony Bennett is a defensive genius or someone on his staff is.

Bennett definitely is. But assistant Ron Sanchez probably is too. He's consistently named to lists of top college assistants. New Yorker too. . .

For what it's worth, here's what Owen's father had to say about the game:

Men lie women lie numbers don’t. You go 6-8 1-1 from 3. No reason he not getting 12-15 shots a game. With everyone else shooting so bad. Run more stuff for #11. If I was Tariq I would shoot every time I touch the ball no matter what. He not selfish won’t do it.

I'm sure we all know this, but in case you didn't, Owens can transfer as a grad student after this season. Let's keep him happy.

LJSA usually enjoy your posts, but if keeping Owens happy means he gets to shoot 15 times a game, well then he can go be happy in whatever Fantasy Land he can think of that lets people with his skill set shoot 15 times a game. I like Owens and I think he is a real nice role player but his dad should maybe consider giving the kid a hot dog and maybe a weight set. If he gained some weight / strength and just worried about rebounding and blocking shots I could see him one day showing up on an NBA roster.

I think papa Owens is saying that Mullin doesn't run enough offensive sets with Tariq in mind, instead relying on Ponds, Ahmed and Clark hoisting 3 pointers. Even Trimble and Alibegovic, when they play, are positioned on the perimeter waiting for long shots. That said, I find his comments divisive.:(

Ok some of that might be warranted but he also specifically mentioned 12-15 shots. "No reason he is not getting 12-15 shots a game". He would have to transfer to D2 school to get that

I am a big fan of Tariq Owens - he is the one player who has really improved since last year. He is shooting 53% from the field, 74% from the line and 35% from three. He is averaging less than 7 shots per game; no reason that shouldn't be closer to 10 shots per game although I'd like to see only 1-2 of those be from three point line. We also need him to get 7-8 rebounds a game and he can't do that from three point line. His dad's tweet is an indication of tough job staff has to keep the players focused on team goals rather than individual stats amidst all the losing. Not expecting to win at home against Xavier, but it is critical that we be competitive.

It’s the relentless rebuild year after year, coach after coach, that is discouraging.

+10,000

That's what I'm freaking sick of. Since the Pitt scandal year:
Forget Norm.
Lavin - Takes Norms seniors to the NCAA Tourny (ty Dunlap.), and if not for DJ's injury, was a good possibility of getting to the 2 week of the tourny. Probably a better team then Lavins seniors. 2nd year, Dunlap coach those freshmen to 6 BE wins, a nice feat. Then get to 2 NITs (one as a #1 seen only to get blown out at Carnesecca. Two idiot on the team, one who kept leaving back to philly, another another who refused to play in the be conf tournament. Then his last year when they got to the ncaa tourny, but idiot #1 smoked pot and was suspeneded. And, uhhh, to bad Lavin got lazy and forgot to keep recruiting.
Currently Mullin - 1-17, to 7-11, so we're feeling good about this year, maybe possibly even an NIT appearance, yeah we had hope. Then because of one player, only one play. It turns from possibly and NIT appearance to 0-10, and Butler smacking up 70-45??? There's no f'ing excuse for that shit. Mullin promised the turn around, and to get things right.
So where's the turn around Chris? If you want your words to become true, then a coach or 2 that know wtf they are doing.
If he's 7-11 in his fourth year, that's not good enough. Then maybe he should step down.
Sorry in year 4 under Mullin if they're horrible then ......
The truth is that through 3 years, Mullin has the worst record at SJU of any coach in schools history.

Sad but true.

Your opinion your entitled to it. Why is playing away from basket? Match ups he’s not doing that on his own. I’ll leave it at that
