Butler 2nd time

St. John's has lost 13 of 14 against ranked opponents, including all three this season.

What does that say to you?

The three this season tells me what we all know; we have the first line talent to compete with anyone but not the depth. Hopefully that 0 fer changes tonight.

Agree with Paul, finding minutes for Balamou would be beneficiary and help us late by keeping Dom fresh

Healthy dose of Sheed and Dom on Dunham. They have to embrace shutting him down as they have other, more marquee matchups. If we got up for guys like this the way we collectively get up for Okafor and Henton we'd have a different record.

This game gets won on the defensive end and, net of Dunham, we accomplish that by playing disciplined defense inside 20 feet. Butler does not shoot the 3 well but very high percentage from 2, so little reason to extend. Moreover they don't make mistakes so not only no ROI on full/.75 court pressure, but that strategy actually plays right into their hands as they can fundamentally break press and get favorable numbers in transition, something they are incapable of manufacturing on their own. We spent 40 minutes (with no adjustment, right down to the final dagger from Dunham made possible by unnecessary gamble on Barlow) learning this lesson a month ago so should be well-versed in pitfalls.

Pack it in. Their assist totals are even worse than ours which speaks to a lack of playmaking ability. Their best attribute is capitalizing on every advantage opponent gives them, and I don't see how they have an advantage when we are set up in the half court. They should have a difficult time creating off those matchups.

That dagger Dunham nailed on us last game DLo was the one covering him, I think DLo slipped or something on the play wasn't his fault but it should be Dom on him this time around nonetheless.

Butler didn't get even close to our best last time out. Sir Dom had a really bad game and we were carried by DLo. If Jordan and Dom both pitch in with the performances they had against providence we should be fine if we don't let Dunham go off. Outside of his 6 3s butler struggled to score on our athleticism

Branch unsuccessfully gambled on Barlow near half-court for at least the third time in the second half. Dee, probably frustrated in the previous two gambles resulting in uncontested layups, left Dunham to help on Barlow. Barlow made obvious kick to Dunham and it was lights out.

Branch's fault, not Dee's, but main point is Butler will have a really hard time generating that kind of action on their own. What they will do is make you pay if you give it to them. Don't give it to them. As you note they should have a difficult time creating offense against our athleticism if we play them straight-up in the half court.

Yea I knew something along those lines happened, I don't remember the play too well, I deleted that one off my DVR immediately :cheer:

Here's the thread about the game from the butler perspective, some are very worried about this one. http://butlerhoops.com/forum/showthread.php?t=857

Also here is an article from the Indianapolis star where they talk about the game and the return of rysheed - http://www.indystar.com/story/sport...-make-life-more-difficult-at-hinkle/22764553/

Excellent critique SJU15. Don't gamble. Be disciplined! Let's not play into their hands. They are smart. Can we be likewise? We'll see.

Coach has to be mindful to give the starters a break every 8-10 min. I also hope CO does not spend the whole night chasing the ball on D. Stay home.

6 1/2 point dogs.

Curious - what was the line when they came to our place and we were the ones who were ranked and they were the ones projected near the bottom of the league?

Let's just play the game and see if we learned anything. See if they have an answer for Jordan this time around, too.

8 1/2.
call me crazy but I think Im betting us on this one with those points

Mike, just wear the hat. They need everything for this one.
Yeah the hat is key plus I need to remember to wear the sneakers. I think that might also be part of the karma because at the Duke game I also forgot to wear them and wore timberlands

You got to get back on your game. Also, I noticed Alfredo wearing the islander hat during the Duke melt down. Think that was another factor?

Karma was crazy that day. Who would have thought my friend would call me that morning telling me someone was sick and he had an extra ticket. And that ticket happened to be in 114. It's like I never left. That was a bad omen, not my Islanders cap.

For the first time since 1986, the Islanders are in better shape that SJU for the postseason.

We can't leave easy points on the floor. We left 8 points in the Duke game and that came back to haunt us. We are not that great offensively where we can tolerate that. Butler is a tough, well disciplined team. We need to make every possession count.

Look at the rosters of Big East teams. That's an assignment. Very few teams play the 8th or 9th man more than 10 minutes a game. Most play 8. We play 7 right now. Is it because the dropoff is so severe after 7 (or 6), or the staff has yet to establish a solid rotation? Look at all the guys who have warranted significant minutes at times this season (JDR, Balamou, Myles Stewart, Amar, C Jones) You could make an argument for any getting 9-10 minutes per game.

My opinion is that you can't use your 8th man only in case of emergency, because if you go that he won't be game ready. But that's just my opinion.

If you are referring to me as a hater than you are completely wrong. I am at every home game and support our boys as well as the coach 100%
Just stating the facts

We have 6 legitimate D1 players and have had injuries, players not available, foul trouble, etc. that leave us at times with 5. Of those 6 players only 1 is a legitimate big. AA has provided some acceptable minutes but he is far from a dependable, consistent D1 player at this point in his career. He is a stopgap. None of the others you mention merit consideration at this point. You can make up whatever fairy tale spin you want to but none of them have shown or been given the opportunity to show they can be consistent 9-10 minute contributors. Deal with the reality and not your nonsensical wishful thinking. You see I don't don't have to look at rosters and spin numbers to try and make things APPEAR to be better than they are; I see the team we put on the floor and analyze their performance. Maybe we turned a corner against Providence and will start to close out games against good teams but until we do consistently I will fall back on the reality of most of our outcomes against those teams. Like you and all SJU fans I hope we win every game from here on out but the question was posed about games we ALREADY lost and I offered my analysis. If you have one of your own, post it.

Don't worry about him, google, that guy is a troll who just tries to get under people's skin, he's an Iona fan who has made his living at johnny jungle but for whatever reason has decided to annoy people here instead

Some are going to like this, if I recall the reaction to some of Seth's predictions last year.

St. John’s at Butler, Tuesday, 7 p.m., Fox Sports 1

St. John’s got a huge win on Saturday when it completed a season sweep of Providence. Butler, however, is a tough, disciplined team that takes care of the ball, can put points on the board and is very tough on the offensive glass despite its lack of height.

Butler 74, St. John’s 64
