Butler 2nd time

Sir' Dom needs to shut down Roosevelt Jones.

Then who guards Chrabasz?
CO will guard Woods.
They are a tough match up.

Agreed, these are difficult match-ups. I just think Roosevelt Jones is the guy to take away. He is like their Sir' Dom......but not quite as good.

Jones: 12.7 Pts. / 5.8 Rebounds / 3.8 Assists
Pointer 12.2 Pts./ 7.4 Rebounds / 3.4 Assists

Sir Dom has to guard Chrabasz, just scored 30 points. CO takes Woods. Figure Jordan on Dunham, Greene on Barlow and Harrison on Jones. Hopefully D'LO is fully recovered because Roosevelt Jones can burn us. We have to box out and cut their offensive and defensive boards. Pointer's matchup is the key IMHO. We have to believe Lavin will not go to a zone anytime in this game.

Forget Chrabasz, that's a once in a year game. He will not hurt us to that level. Concentrate on Barlow.
Cut off the head and the body dies. Old quote from Arkansas coach.

Disagree.
Barlow's their worst player.
Dunham and Jones are the 2 that can kill you.

Without Barlow, they don't beat us the first time let alone beating Marquette their last game.

did you mean to say Dunham?

Dunham is their best player but Bartow played a near perfect game for them. listed at 5-11 and 187, he scored 15 points on 6-9 shooting, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals. At least once he caught our defense napping and went end to end for a layup. Solid player who makes few mistakes. The kind of kid who supports Monte's 3 star recruiting premise.

Butler has an 8 man rotation, although their 7th and 8th men average only 12 and 10 mpg respectively.

You know, I really like the new Big East. No real giants in terms of programs, no huge budget advantages, and top to bottom developing into a really competitive league. It's becoming a reason to buy season tickets because there are no cakewalks.

A while back I heard a heralded coach explain that winning in basketball usually requires that you create more mismatch problems for your opponent than they create for you. Our guys are athletic and relentless, and unlike Butler, we often have 5 very athletic guys on the floor, with 4 who can lead a break and handle the ball in the open court. It makes us very dangerous in transition. All 5 guys can score inside. Jordan, Harrison, and Greene can all hit threes, which draws defenses out. What we are finding out is that it's only when we don't shoot well that we beat ourselves. We are going to lose the boards most games, but we will make it up on turnover and steals differential.

Your posts always pick me up.

I really appreciate that sentiment. Thanks, Tom!

To think Barlow was a walk on. In my opinion we made a mistake too often pressuring him in backcourt. He blew by guys drawing help defense, resulting in made open shots, including some threes.

You know, looking at him, yo can see why he was bypassed at the D1 level. He reminds me of kids I'd played baseball against when I was 18. They did everything fundamentally well, make contact, turn the double play, run the bases well, bunt, etc. But they didn't have MLB physical skills - gun of an arm, big league power, blazing speed, etc. Those guys are bypassed in favor of guys who are less skilled sometimes but are superior talents.

Good for Barlow, who has proven himself at this level. Of course there won't be a next level for him, but still, good for him. And you are right, when we gambled and were out of position on defense, he read it early and perfectly, and we paid for it via Butler easy buckets.

So Bob Wenzel will be one of the announcers. Hopefully he will remember D'Angelo's last name. At his last game he called him D'Angelo Russell.
I really think Jim Jackson is a hellava analyst. Right on the money in my opinion.

Not to mention that he was all but hugging himself after calling a Chris O block, it was Dom and Chris wasn't in the game. :cheer:

There can be no mistaking the FACT that Butler has built a Basketball Program over the last 10 years or so, that could be a model for other schools to emulate.. Maybe we should do some Brain trusting on the subject.

Stephens put together a team of kids that got then to 2 Final 4's.. And, remember in Indiana and the Midwest, they are competing with IU, ND, PURDUE and, other BIG 10 schools.

They play team oriented BB that doesn't rely on individual athleticism to win. The point about BARLOW beating all our guards off the dribble, in the game at CA is a case in point. Neither DLO, Greene or Branch could stay in front of him.. And, JONES was a monster against us. He controlled the inside game and played DLO tough on Defense.

Sure, they got killed last year in the BE but, they've adjusted this year. They also get 4 year players with good roster Management. . Perhaps Steve ought to seek Butler coaches as mentors in learning how to Coach, instead of Wooden, Coack K, ETC.

Butler , I think, gets kids who can already play and know BB but, may not be NBA athletes. I think Lavin believes he needs pro potential players to win CHAMPIONSHIPS. it's a different philosophy and Lavin ought to seek out Mark Few, Shaka Smart and, other COACHES who win with less than he has. As fans, I think we would enjoy seeing some style of BB on The COURT , rather than helter skelter, undefined BB. It would also contribute to more wins in games you should win and less losses to teams you are suppose to beat.

6 1/2 point dogs.

Curious - what was the line when they came to our place and we were the ones who were ranked and they were the ones projected near the bottom of the league?

Let's just play the game and see if we learned anything. See if they have an answer for Jordan this time around, too.

Different match-ups, road game and all but the very nice win over Providence has my optimist-meter shading towards a 6.5 out of 10.

It was 3 after Creighton and 8 after Syracuse... ;)

Keep it at 6.5. Whenever we get too optimistic, you think you are in bed with Angelina Jolie. Then the lights go on, and you wake up next to Kirstie Alley. There's nothing wrong with that of course. :)

That's how it started. Went down 4 points, I believe, when it was announced that Jordan would not play.
