Butler 2nd time

D is Butlers best feature. Like us they depend on a core group to carry the load. Getting the jump on them in the foul game a must. If we get calls it will be early as the refs will be setting the pattern of keeping control. Butler in foul trouble could be a huge help where we need it. Down the stretch. Get in the lane and to the rim early, often, and hard. Playing the whole game in half court sets not likely to get it done. Go Storm.

from the Butler board. Sound familiar?

The student section being poor has been beat to death. I don't know all of the reasons or solutions, but the fact is that the student turnout and energy is poor compared to where Butler is as a program. However, I would also extend this to the general crowd section as well. Sometimes it seems like Hinkle crowds would prefer having teeth pulled (and I'm a dentist) to getting out of their seats more than once or twice in an entire game to make some noise and give some energy. I've attended 6-8 games this year and have seen hundreds at Hinkle in years past. It's frustrating to me when I watch elite programs and their home crowds. As much as I dislike the school in Bloomington, their home court advantage is probably top 5 in the nation due to their fans and other teams in the top halves of major conferences bring it as well.

Interesting how posters like to re-create game situations and play 'what if," I suppose that creates a sense of analytical justification for something or another?

Like if Dom did this or DLO MADE THAT FOUL SHOT, ETC.

Especially interesting how many fans feel that Butler can't create off the dribble or doesn't shoot 3's well? They seemed to be able to pretty much do both, in their win against us at CA..

We add Jordan tonite, which is a big plus. 2 of our losses have come when he was out of the line up, CREIGHTON and BUTLER..

i don't recall any mention , since last week's loss to CREIGHTON about the injured Patella he sustained in that game. Or, ALLEGEDLY SUSTAINED.. Is it possible he was benched in that loss for some infraction of the Lavin or school rules? AGAIN?

Regardless of the soap opera that surrounds Jordan, our season starts tonite, if we want to stand a chance of the NCAA'S..

lET'S HOPE WE GET THAT SIGNATURE WIN.

St. John's has lost 13 of 14 against ranked opponents, including all three this season.

What does that say to you?

The three this season tells me what we all know; we have the first line talent to compete with anyone but not the depth. Hopefully that 0 fer changes tonight.

Look at the rosters of Big East teams. That's an assignment. Very few teams play the 8th or 9th man more than 10 minutes a game. Most play 8. We play 7 right now. Is it because the dropoff is so severe after 7 (or 6), or the staff has yet to establish a solid rotation? Look at all the guys who have warranted significant minutes at times this season (JDR, Balamou, Myles Stewart, Amar, C Jones) You could make an argument for any getting 9-10 minutes per game.

My opinion is that you can't use your 8th man only in case of emergency, because if you go that he won't be game ready. But that's just my opinion.

We have 6 legitimate D1 players and have had injuries, players not available, foul trouble, etc. that leave us at times with 5. Of those 6 players only 1 is a legitimate big. AA has provided some acceptable minutes but he is far from a dependable, consistent D1 player at this point in his career. He is a stopgap. None of the others you mention merit consideration at this point. You can make up whatever fairy tale spin you want to but none of them have shown or been given the opportunity to show they can be consistent 9-10 minute contributors. Deal with the reality and not your nonsensical wishful thinking. You see I don't don't have to look at rosters and spin numbers to try and make things APPEAR to be better than they are; I see the team we put on the floor and analyze their performance. Maybe we turned a corner against Providence and will start to close out games against good teams but until we do consistently I will fall back on the reality of most of our outcomes against those teams. Like you and all SJU fans I hope we win every game from here on out but the question was posed about games we ALREADY lost and I offered my analysis. If you have one of your own, post it.

First of all, you once again jumped in and felt compelled to engage me when I was responding to the guy the guy said we've lost 13 of 14 to ranked opponents.

You like calling people names and belittling. I did none of that in this response. When you get called on your misstatement of the facts you howl like a geriatric patient being put into hospital restraints. On a daily basis you don't know what to rant against - Lavin's ability to coach a talented squad, Lavin's ability not to bring in enough talent, or other user's here who challenge your assertions.

From what I can ascertain you don't go to many if any games, you didn't go to the school, and get easily rattled when challenged but then go on the offensive.

My point is that I feel we have some serviceable bench players that can be better utilized, even on a situational basis, but must be used more regularly for us to have a shot at a winning season. You disagree, and that's fine, even though my conversation was with someone else, you felt compelled to hop in, which is also fine. But, dude, you have to stop the hostility - you come off as a grouchy old coot.

Keys to the game:
-We need to execute on offense.
-We need to limit turnovers.
-We need to close out on their shooters.
-And we need to win the rebounding battle.

Agree with almost all except last point. We have a pretty solid =/- ratio on both turnovers and steals, which offsets rebounding problems cause by starting 3.5 guards. Harrison at 100% busted it on the boards, but cannot be counted on to do so.

I think we play man from the opening tap, so that they don't kill us with open three's. What do you think?

Also add limit 2nd chance shots.

There is no way Lavin plays zone with the three point shooters - Dunham and Barlow.

Pull Dunham's 3s out and Butler a awful 3pt shooting team. I would not wanna play up in anyones face but his. I don't want the guys beaten of the dribble(fouls) or giving up second chance shots. If they shoot from 3 they be helping us get out on the break which is what we need. I know every 3 we give up feels like a dagger, but a game plan built around stopping the three against a team that shoots 340 and makes 6 a game should not jeopardize us getting beat of the dribble or playing to far out from the hoop. If our guys get to the line I think they win.

No that 0 fer goes back to last year. We had plenty of depth last year.

It simply tells you that this group of players has not been able to win the big game. They have had many chances and have always come up short. Last year against Cuse, Nova, etc same story. We didn't lose to Duke because we didn't have enough players. We lost because we didn't make enough plays at the end of the game. Shots we made against Providence to ice it, we missed against Duke.

We have enough good players to win we just havent won the big ones. Same story as last year. "Unfinished business" theme has been BS so far. Time for this core group to finish!!

Sounds like a team where we can play the box and 1 on defense. Have the four guys in a zone (box) and have Sheed constantly follow Dunham. If he gets tired from following him, sub in Branch and keep them switching in and out.

disagree with all you guys talking about packing it in or saying only Dunham hits threes for them. We have to extend. You may be right that only Dunham hits threes but when was the last time a team didn't look like an amazing 3pt shooting team against us when we did not extend? How many nobodies have had career shooting nights against us the past several seasons? We looked good early this season because we were doing something we haven't for the three previous seasons: get out on the shooters and lock them down for 2 halves of basketball. We moved away from that, I suppose in answer to Obekpa and Pointer foul problems but it was throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
