Bubble Watch

Joe Lunardi claims St. John’s will be OUT if they lose Thursday
better question who is Joe Lunardi and why do I care. St. John's wont be out if we lose we are at 19-13 11 big east wins. Plus the Pitino effect, NCAA wants him in the tourny, eyes on the prize.

Lunardi is ESPN's bracketologist. He's not exactly a nobody. But when you look at his rankings as a bracketologist, his #s are pretty average: http://www.bracketmatrix.com/rankings.html

We're far from a sure thing. We also don't deserve to be a sure thing. We blew way too many good wins, and Villanova/Utah have sucked down the stretch. It is what it is.

This years bubble watch is similar to that of 1979. SJU was 18 and 10 going into what was called an ECAC four team tournament the winner getting a bid. SJU won their first game but lost the final and most observers felt they were out.
There was no media coverage like today on selection Sunday but SJU got what was published as the last bid. Luckily the field was increased from 32 to 40 that year and SJU played in an eight game round one. No mention of play in.
They beat Temple and then in the round two on a Sunday day in infamy in Raleigh, NC beat Duke by two with Penn beating NC in the other game. SJU then beat Rutgers but lost to Penn by two missing out getting to the final four.
If SJU wins Thur that will pretty much assure a bid but if they lose perhaps 1979 can be revisited.

Some may recall we were also the last bid in 2019

I think he has both of us in the same category. If we both win, we're both not locks to make it. If one of us loses, we're out.

Yeah, I deleted my comment as I am not sure I read it correctly. What confuses me is that he's saying Providence has to win two games in the Big East tournament, while he is implying that Nova only has to win once against DePaul.

Nova's NET and metrics are better. I think Prov is in a tier below us, and do need to win two games.

Also, that whole second category is super unclear and doesn't really say much. I just like it because I know who to root against.

What is the difference between “win and in” and “out without this win”?

Are they saying SJU must beat Seton Hall and the next game too? What am I misunderstanding?

I'm guessing what it means is, we would likely be in but if there are unforeseen bid thieves, we could still be vulnerable to be out.
