BRACKETOLOGY, RPI, SOS

Pitt doesn't belong in the tournament, and no one can tell me differently, they will be bounced in a blowout just like last year.

I ordered a new johnnies t shirt to be worn for the game.

If we play a great game, you realize you'll be obligated to wear it every day without washing it until April.

I still feel that w/ bubble being so soft that if we beat Marquette and win 1 in big east tourney, we are in. A 21-12, 10-8 big east team NOT in field - rare. I'd take my chances. But I know some think 22-23 is what's needed. If we lose Marq, then I think winning 3 could be only option. I think finishing 10-8 in be is huge.

A double-digit win over Marquette would be a nice start.

I'll certainly take a double-digit win, but it's not needed. Just a win on the road would suffice.

did I read the new bracketology correctly? Only 2 BE teams?

More likely Providence. “@anthonyparelli: @ESPNLunardi any chance 4 big east team make it? Creighton, Nova, Xavier SJU?”

X, easy.“@TroyMauriello: Xavier finishes 20-12 with 1st rd big east loss, St. John's finishes 21-12 with 2nd rd big east loss, who gets in?”

20 wins, we're out. 21 wins, we're sweating as much as a team possibly can on SS. 22 wins, we're in. I really do believe it will end up being that straightforward.

People seriously need to get of the 20, 21, 22 win stuff.

That number is irrelevant right now. There was only 1 significant win in there so it simply does not matter. We celebrated beating Georgetown like it was a championship or something.

The aim should be getting to the BE finals. That's it.

Lunardi said after the Xavier loss that the goal for St. John's is to get 3 more wins and they should be in he tourney. So the number isn't irrelevant...

SJUalum98's opinion on St. John's bubble chances VS Joe Lunardi's opinion on St. John's bubble chances. Guess who I'm going to believe??

The topic of how many wins we need has been discussed to death. Let's fantasize for a second. What seed do you think we get if we beat Marquette and run the table in the BET? If that were to happen, we would be 14-3 in our last 17 games with probably 2 more wins against tourney likely teams. I'm thinking 7 seed.

The Atlantic 10, AAC and SEC are all weaker conferences then the Big East but might wind up with more bids this year. Seems unfair.

I think it's pretty equal at the top of each conference but it's those sub-200 RPI teams in the A10, AAC and SEC that brings it down.

Where the Big East is impressive is that the worst team in the league RPI wise is 143 and there are 7 teams in the Top 70. The downside to that is those are the numbers of a conference that will beat each other up and make some of the second tier teams not look as good as they are.

I'm glad you value Lunardi's opinion.

Here's his opinion that you probably should chew on:

But keep looking at win totals.

This thread is starting to look like my comments from more than a month ago that the BE was a 2 bid league, 3 tops. There were those who thought it was a 5 or 6 bid league, which IMHO was always ridiculous. I think the BET will sort out whether it is 3 or 4 bid league. Nova and Creighton are in. Xavier can do enough to lock up a spot without winning the tournament. The question is whether a fourth team out of SJU, Providence, Georgetown or Marquette will jump up and win the league tournament to grab a fourth bid. If one of those teams reaches the championship game after beating Creighton or Nova and the bubble breaks right elsewhere then they might be the fourth team even without winning the championship, but I wouldn't count on it.

We'll know soon enough. From a St John's perspective, the only way to eliminate all doubt is to win the league tournament. Anything else and we will be sweating - the only question is how much.

The LMF fearless forecast is that we lose to Marquette, win 2 games in the league tournament, lose in the championship game, and then sweat it out on selection day. I think Nova gets a 3 seed, Creighton gets a 5 seed, Xavier gets a 10 seed, and if another BE team gets in then it is an 11 or 12 seed. That's my "out on a limb" for the day.

This just happened...

#sjubb predicted 1 seed in #NIT @barbs12094 @patrishholliday @JGio92 @BarneySTJ @Tricia_Murph #homegame

So what I'm getting out of all this is that we need to beat Marquette and make it to the big east championship game to make the NCAA or we can run table and are expected to win the NIT.

Are there any doctors out there?
Lawman hurt himself patting himself on the back too hard.

I agree, the talk of 21/22 wins is purely speculative. Watch the conference tourneys taking place. Root for the favorites to win. Beat Marquette. Win as many BE Tourney games as possible. That's the magic formula.

I think Xavier is sitting pretty even after that loss to Seton Hall. That road win against us was big for them plus they have Creighton and an impressive neutral site win against Cincinnati as two nice feathers in their cap. Providence is in an enviable position. They have a chance to play their way in before the tournament. If they beat Marquette and can get the road win at Creighton they are locked. If they don't beat Creighton they still probably only need to win one game in the BET. Georgetown has that opportunity closing the season with Nova and Creighton but lose them both and it's too late for them. If they split those they are still an interesting case. They'll have 3 Top 25 RPI Wins. Nobody in the conference has that.

I think we are definitely looking at 4 but I'm not closing the door on a 5th team if things break right.

Oh what could have been.
A Penn St. victory would have made our RPI #50.
Damn, that was a huge loss.

Not really. We would still have to beat Ole Miss which Penn State did not do. We beat Georgia Tech so the win total would be the same.
Do you think they would have beaten Ole Miss?
