Bobby Hurley
I grew up in Atlanta, Charlotte, and Raleigh. I moved to NYC for grad school and have remained here since.

Once I have kids I definitely plan to move back South. NYC is a cool experience, but not for me long term. I miss the modernness of Raleigh. The wilderness. Being able to walk outside of my apartment/house and just relax. Too many aspects of NYC are outdated unless you have a ton of money to spend on an apartment.

In fairness, Hurley would have plenty of money to live well here.
His father reportedly turned down multiple -- and no doubt sizable -- offers to coach at a higher level, but stayed at St. Anthony's. So I get the feeling money isn't as important to Bobby as being close to his family is. (And we're talking about millions of dollars per year, probably guaranteed for six years, so it's not like he'll be hurting financially.)

Great sentiments, P Simmons and I agree.
But the longer Hurley remains silent, the longer the odds we'll get him.
It'll be 48 hours later today since the news that 'Mullin Stepping Down' broke.
Go ahead, laugh but it's obvious Hurley had the word well before then that a change was imminent and he was 'our guy'.
So, I think the Hurley flag will be put away and saved for Duke to one day unfurl.
Meanwhile, lets pour through the lists and get our next HC, fast.
Time is an enemy, as I've mentioned in previous posts.
My family immigrated to NYC when I was about 3 years old. I've lived in Queens, Bronx, and now Manhattan. Have never lived anywhere else. My wife is also a native New Yorker.

I love New York. I really do. But I think this narrative that there's nothing better out there is simply false. Cost of living. Pace of life. Weather. Nature. There's just things you can't get in NYC. Add to that the complexity of family and kids. There are a lot of great cities out there. And knowing friends that have left New York, none want to come back....
I want to come back. Buy me a 3000 sq ft loft in soho and i am there.
I'll buy you the loft and you take care of the $5,400 monthly common charges. ;-)

This one looks nice: https://streeteasy.com/building/284-lafayette-street-new_york/sale/1397846#
I don't like the fact that one of the bedrooms is in the front near the door.

I hear you but by your own logic - 3 tourneys in 5 years at bufalo and arizona state. Shouldn’t we be preparing to build a statue for him?

Looks a little like my place with the exception of the indoor plumbing.

You pay for living in or near NYC the biggest city in the world...a global city. Great schools on LI, Westchester, NJ, etc. and extremely low crime in the suburbs. Also the beaches of LI are close. It's funny how so many of the pundits act like Hurley would move to Times Square or something in the middle of the rush. He could have an easy commute living on the beautiful North Shore of LI or in North Jersey. Even Greenwich, CT really. At the end of the day, Arizona is still.....Arizona. You're out in the middle of nowhere. The weather gets to over 100 degrees. Some people like the seasons. College basketball hype in the state is low. ASU's attendance sucked. They will only have students possibly interested but likely not the local public. At SJ we are treated like a pro team when we win big and MSG is sold out. There's just something about the energy and the grit of NYC. Hurley can get a 2nd home in Florida or AZ...he has enough money to work in NY but take vacations to those areas.

Mike, trust me, when you get older and especially with a family. your perspective changes. I was born and raised in Queens, went to high school in Manhattan and lived the first 59 years of my life in Queens and New Jersey so fully understand all NY has to offer. Having said that, the only thing that may get me back to NY/NJ after having lived elsewhere is family, specifically my daughters. Hopefully the family ties (along with the money) are important enough to Hurley to get him back there, but I doubt it will be because he doesn't like living in Arizona.
Born in Manhattan, grew up in Queens where I went to primary, Junior High, High School and College. Got married and moved to Long Island. Never really thought about going elsewhere until a few years ago.

Sitting in Raleigh, NC with family for an event about 8 years ago, I had a cousin ask me if I could see myself moving down there. I told him if he had asked me that two, three years ago, no, but now, yes I could. He said he couldn't see himself living down there or ever leaving New York. He has been living in Charlotte for the past two years.

I love New York and what is has to offer. But there are other places I like and in a few years, can see myself leaving.

We are about 35 minutes north of Charlotte (Lake Norman). Been here since 2011 due to job relo and retired in 2017. A large part of me will always be a NYer and I get up there at least 3 times a year, but if it were up to me, I'd stay here and just visit NY. Beautiful climate with 4 seasons but only 1 or 2 snowfalls and lots of room to breathe. Unfortunately all 3 of my twenty-something daughters gravitated back to the NY/NJ area so I'm pretty sure that when my son graduates college in 4 years my wife will make me move back. Time will tell, but it's a nice place to live.

According to SNY reporters last night the rumor is Repole would be willing to pay for Hurley's buyout. There was also some debate regarding the hiring of Hurley or Mark Jackson. Some didn't like the idea of hiring another pro even though Jackson had experience coaching the Warriors. After Lavin was let go I felt Mark would work out for the Johnnies, especially since he was the floor leader/ coach for us and the Knicks. Oh well!

Conversations with ASU can't begin in earnest until St. John's officially has a head coaching vacancy.
What does that mean? Who would beginning a conversation with ASU? Lost here.
Probably semantics, but whether Bobby is going to (1) leverage an SJU offer for a counter from ASU, or (2) SJU/Bobby are going to initiate the buyout process per Bobby's contract, for a variety of reasons and for both SJU's and Bobby's protection I doubt ASU would be engaged until SJU officially had an opening (in addition to I would imagine Bobby, who would be particularly exposed, getting whatever other assurances he would need from SJU prior to doing so). Which was only 24 hours ago, not a particularly long time when these types of dollar amounts are involved for it to play out, which may be the key point right now.

Was just distinguishing that from the backchannelling SJU and Bobby could have done to try to line something up before the SJU job was officially open, which could have been before season even ended (see Chris Mullin hiring). But if this is serious, no matter which way Bobby wants to play it, would imagine ASU wasn't engaged until yesterday at earliest. That's obviously a guess as there any variety of other ways this could have played / be playing out.

Personally don't see Hurley leveraging the St. John's offer to get a sweeter deal at ASU. The reason I say that is because even though that would mean more years/money which is nice, it also means a much larger buyout. Since I don't believe Hurley wants to spend the rest of his career in Tempe, I don't believe he'll want an enormous contract with an even more enormous buyout essentially holding him hostage when he wants to leave. That's why I still believe he'll take the chance to leave now. Maybe I'm wrong, just my two cents.

Yup but Lavin got fired for almost same resume

Interesting, mattc. I hope you're right.
It's not surprising that ASU wants the opportunity to 'counter' and a good sign that he's a coach one wants to keep.
At the same time, if Bobby does want to return to the NY Metro and sees a great opportunity at St. John's to further plant his reputation in college hoops, it shouldn't require much time to say thanks and decline the counter.
Because it's likely he and Cragg had discussions prior to Mullin stepping down and he has had time to counsel with his wife and family and his dad.
Which is why I think it's today or never to get Bobby Hurley as our HC.
We shall see.
Here's hoping.

My son does summer camp in NY and spends a lot of his summer with my mom in Rockaway and my sis and her kids in Saratoga Springs. It’s my way of making NY his second home. I have a feeling he will gravitate up north when it’s time for college and a career.

We take I-77 for a stretch driving to NY to see the sights and be in nature. I can’t blame anyone for wanting to live in that region.

ruh roh. Don't know who that dude is, but that's definitely a Jon Scheyer jersey,
Just starting a new thread on any Bobby Hurley to SJU news and comments. So many threads to keep track of.
Bobby Hurley should stay out west and maybe the AD Cragg can join him

Scheyer has been an assistant coach for 5 years. Mullin was a head coach for four. You don’t eat 4 million to make that move.
