Bobby Hurley

This is taking too long and that’s never a good sign. I’m starting feel like Bobby did want to come home but his family doesn’t want to.

I'm starting to feel that way too, but at the same time, realizing it hasn't even been 24 hours since SJU released the official Mullin statement.

Hoping we here one way or another in the next 3-4 hours.

We will lose out on Hurley, ignore Pitino, and get Cluess. Then we will be right back here in 4-5 yrs talking about how dumb it was because all he’s done is coached at MAAC level. To be clear, Iona has been consistently pretty good but by no means dominant.

It's always hard to uproot your family even if you are in a very high paying job. Nothing seems to be leaking about our opening in general.

Mike - what if we had the resources and desire to make a fair offer to Hurley or Pitino and they both turn us down. Can you go on record as to who your next choice would be? Just curious.

There are no other options. It’s like an all-out blitz in football...you either get there or it’s a disaster. Cragg called the blitz.

I would’ve forced Mullin out early and hired Oats. See, my “impatience” would pay off in some respects.

I don't know if Hurley is worth $3 million a year.I leave that to the guys who are controlling the purse strings.

But I just cannot imagine that a guy who grew up immersed in the NYC metro basketball scene would prefer to coach in freakin' Tempe, Arizona over getting a shot to coach at MSG, in the media capital of the world.

If no new news by 5 then time to start panicking.

It does seem at least that St. John's is keeping negotiations a secret. This should play out like Cronin to UCLA (surprise announcement) rather than Dixon to UCLA (ugly week of public negotiations).

As noted, the longer this goes on the more unlikely.

More money, more value to your money (cost of living), better weather, less traffic, less crime, lower taxes.

You can take your program all around the country, look at Gonzaga's schedule.

I think in the end Hurley gets a raise and extension. Either way I think we know his situation before the night is over.

It may be a good sign, that it's taking so long because they're in negotiations on contract and buyout money. Let's hope it gets done without much further delay.

Great sentiments, P Simmons and I agree.
But the longer Hurley remains silent, the longer the odds we'll get him.
It'll be 48 hours later today since the news that 'Mullin Stepping Down' broke.
Go ahead, laugh but it's obvious Hurley had the word well before then that a change was imminent and he was 'our guy'.
So, I think the Hurley flag will be put away and saved for Duke to one day unfurl.
Meanwhile, lets pour through the lists and get our next HC, fast.
Time is an enemy, as I've mentioned in previous posts.

Very plausible. I'd be surprised (and somewhat disappointed) if we hear anything before it's virtually a done deal or a dead one.
Regardless, we need to take the long view and get this hire right. As another poster (can't remember who) said, if we screw this one up the program could well be headed for irrelevance. If we make the right hire, worst case we have one bad year and an upward trajectory after that.

Just a note, when Cluess coached at St. Mary's, for a period of time they were ranked the #1 team in the country, and he was in the top ten for a number of years. Playing and coaching are two different things, as we have just learned (the hard way)[/quote]

He might have had one team ranked nationally with Danny Green but never #1

The guy won two B level NY State Championships @ St. Mary's and then lost with his best team ever to Xaverian (Chris Taft & LeVance Fields) when they stepped up to the AA level.

He was probably the most hated high school coach on Long Island and the guys in the CHSAA back then had no use for him either.

My family immigrated to NYC when I was about 3 years old. I've lived in Queens, Bronx, and now Manhattan. Have never lived anywhere else. My wife is also a native New Yorker.

I love New York. I really do. But I think this narrative that there's nothing better out there is simply false. Cost of living. Pace of life. Weather. Nature. There's just things you can't get in NYC. Add to that the complexity of family and kids. There are a lot of great cities out there. And knowing friends that have left New York, none want to come back....

Hahaha

I think 5 PM is pretty arbitrary. Friday seems more reasonable.

I’m sure ASU is presenting an extension and/or a raise. Any AD worth his salt would have anticipated that in advance as well as cost of living and income tax differential in addition to a raise plus other streams of income like a basketball camp and other incentives. Perhaps Hurley wants assurances that the facilities will be updated.

If Hurley's answer was a firm no, I think we would have known that quickly. I think the fact that things are so quiet could be a good sign, maybe crossing T's and dotting I's take a while or maybe they are haggling over some money and details.......I know we want to get this done quickly, but no news is good news, at least for the time being.

I have to admit I have no idea who is the “right” hire for the Program. It is not like Hurley is a proven big time winner. I do like that he is a younger, houngrier candidate or at least so it appears. Clues would need to prove he would be willing to embrace the full recruiting efforts this job would take. Pitino would be the clear winner but his baggage probably makes that a pipe dream. Other than those three I am not aware of another realistic option. Mark Jackson? Don't see him grinding in the East Coast anymore.
This is a tough job to sell right now.
