Bobby Hurley
$2.1 million asu salary He will also receive a $1 million retention bonus on Jan. 1 of 2022.

Just to match our offer would have to be in 2.4 range

It would like take 6 years, 18 million. Wonder if brotherly competition kicks in and he'd want 6 years 21 million
Is he worth $3MM a year? Don't think so at this point in his career, not even close. Then again if we are desperate, law of supply and demand.

This is what we will have to deal with if we are going to try to poach from F5 schools. On one hand I don't see him worth 3 mil but like you said that's his demand right now. If you want to be a major factor in college hoops you must be willing to do what it takes to get top notch coaches.

Also, didn't realize my post came off as hysterical. Just read that there are rumors saying he really likes Arizona and that the only way we have a chance is if he doesn't get a big raise from ASU which I assume they will give him. Don't think Hurley has lived in NYC area since 1989 which was 30 years ago. It will come down to how badly he wants to be close to home, but does he really consider it home anymore? Just reacting to that. I just think if he's going to play hardball, all the more reason to get Pitino...and actually save money if you can believe that. Pitino is 100% worth what he'd get here. Probably worth double what we'd give him. Don't worry about the noise we will hear...negative press ends after a week at MOST. Coach K and Dick V have both supported him publicly. It's time to pull the trigger. He's not satan.

ASU bought out their football coach in 2017 and have to pay him $12M. That's a big factor in giving Bobby more as well. They might be a power 5 football school but that adds up

My hope is Hurley name getting floated out there to appease the fans and alumni that want a flashy name. This also helps out Hurley who maybe gets more $ out of ASU. Then hopefully ST John's for once can make a sound basketball decision that fits what ST John's should be trying to do going forward. But since we are ST John's …….

I've been staying (relatively) low - focusing on my work and adult kids (how often does a Dad get to attend a Yankee game - Friday night - together with his NC daughter and NYC son? I am fortunate)...but glancing at this topic I note and like:
Chicago - Cragg has a plan or he would not have cut CM adrift

Fordham 96 SJU will make a competitive offer then move on

Moose - yes no dragging this on ala UCLA with 11 offers before we land one

Johnny Fan - behind the scenes stuff started long before the weekend

NC Johnnie "should be an interesting few days" - need patience

Yep my fellow posters -
I wish Chris Mullin nothing but the best - health to him and his family and he will always be #1 in my book; Be well Chris and thank you very much for all your have added to SJU basketball over these decades;
I can only believe that the talented and experience Mike Cragg would ONLY have taken the SJU position if he knew he had authority to observe then (using his Duke aura, understanding and skills) move the school in a good direction - I believe he is doing that; I believe he has the potential coach, current players and recruits in mind - and will not allow this to drag out -
Until proven otherwise, Mike Cragg will get this done in a manner that our program will be moving on a successful driven path.
All the best
let's go Storm

I don't get how Hurley doesnt fit what needs to be done moving forward. His first 6 years are solid. Amazing how quick people dismiss some coaches for their first coaching jobs but then others who have a solid record are also dismissed. You said you want Cluess. He's a fine choice C to me. There is no B in my mind right now. Maybe it's not needed. Not getting it but I know your idol was fired. Do you want help taking the poster down from above the bed? ;)

Have a feeling we will find out today if Hurley is coming or not. No inside info, just a hunch.

Give Hurley the college try (he will probably stay at ASU) and then get Cluess.
Please Don't sit on our asses and watch every player exit and every possible late Spring signee and early summer Grad Transfer addition evaporate.

Cluess has won at every level and that would be a very nice change from the resumes of Roberts, Lavin (unless you make final four at UCLA it is not looked on as great), and Mullin.

I know not the name everyone wants but I do think Cluess makes most sense for the program.
Listen if Hurley gets the job I will root for the team and give him as much time as everyone gave Mullin/ LOL No will give him more than a year.
Hurley too volatile and not sure what on his coaching resume makes him this can't miss candidate. From what I understand did not get any 5 star guys and when I have watched ASU I never said damn I wish ST John's played that way.
Again if he is the guy I will hope for the best but my prediction is it ends badly in a Fran kind of way or he does well and moves on.
Mullin didn't work out and either did Lavin. The program took a shot, now lets go in other direction and bring in a coach that will try to build something and has had experience doing just that.
Though again sign me up for Pitino

Sadly old room at pops house was turned into exercise room and not sure what happened to Mullin, Strawberry, Christie Brinkley and Heather Thomas posters. Heather Thomas one was awesome BTW. Sort of an aqua blue bikini. Most underrated 80's hottie if you ask me.

The commitment to Hurley would likely be in the 6 year $18 million range, maybe a little less. It would be all guaranteed, considering we fire a coach every 4 to 6 years.

Cluess could cost as little as 6 years $4.5 million, or a contract that starts at 750 and escalates to $1 million by year 3 or 4.

For the money, Cluess would appear to be a much better value. At the same salary, I'd go for Hurley, although with a lot of success he would definitely be a flight risk. This would be Cluess' only desire and he could be here for the next 10-12 years.

Before my time. But I'll take your word for it ;)
I hated Bobby as a player.

First year is a wash. Zero expectations for whoever is here. By 3rd year you need to be dancing. If not the gloves are off sadly. Bobby has danced by or before Year 3 at both his stops. Same rules apply if he's here to me.

It's such a soft market combined with Cragg is definitely going to go with some level of comfort and that point can't be a negative. Anyone hiring would likely do the same in his shoes.

You know Cluess it seems on some level directly or indirectly. Any truth the rumors of the rift with Lou that only recently seemed to pop up. For years it was just that he left SJU but now it seems chatter about a rift.

Thinking about this, I would say getting Hurley may be a very heavy lift. He can stay put at ASU, know he is building on success he has already achieved, and he clearly would be a consideration for Duke's HC along with Wojo, Dawkins, etc. Other than money and perhaps distance to parents, don't really see an upside for him to come here. He never has resonated as a New Yorker, and in his mind may be more of a negative in terms of climate and comfort than Arizona.

In any conversation with him he has never mentioned any animosity towards St. John's or Lou. In fact I know for a fact that he reads or read this site, and has remained at the very least highly interested in our program and at most a big fan. To be clear, I'm not in recent touch with him, but would add that knowing him personally he is really a great person - not just saying that. He is a very straight and direct shooter, extremely respectful, and will ask your opinions about basketball, not just espouse his.

I don't know what the fallout was or if there wasa fallout out. He never got any opportunity to play here. He speaks about a knee injury hampering him, and maybe he was upset at not getting a chance to perform on the court here - I don't know.

I have no idea if Bobby Hurley is the best candidate SJU can get or if SJU can afford him.

But if it ends up being Bobby, what is it exactly that would make folks anything other than ecstatic that he would even consider coming to SJU? You could argue he has a better job right now, and there is almost no question he will have an opportunity to get a better job.

We aren't North Carolina or even North Carolina State. Have to be realistic - upside of owning the biggest sports media market in the country like a pro team notwithstanding, which I think is a real consideration for the right coach - about what this job is.

We are fortunate there seems to even be real conversation about Bobby Hurley, and that the ship hasn't sailed after we passed on him and his brother 4 years ago when we would have been more attractive in their respective career arcs. Danny has definitely passed this job by, and my guess is it's more peripheral factors - not just money or the quality of the job - that has us in the running for Bobby. He's otherwise passed this job by too.

Bobby's father is arguably the best high school coach of all time. Their network is a NY Metro one. He played for the best college basketball program in the country and thus knows how a real program is run. His pro career was tragically cut short so you get the sense, in addition to being a competitive maniac by nature, that succeeding in coaching matters to him. He and his brother took over a Wagner team that the year prior was 5-26 and in their second year went 25-6. Wagner! Bobby took over a Buffalo team that was 14-20 the year before he got there and had never been to an NCAAT, went 19-10 in year 1 and made the NCAAT in year 2. Buffalo! Arizona State had made the NCAAT 3 times in the prior 20 years and hadn't made it in consecutive years since the 1979 - 1981 seasons. Bobby made it twice and back to back within 4 years and the team looks poised for a 3rd straight, something the program hasn't done since the 60s. So within Year 5 he'll likely be ASU's most successful coach in 50+ years.

Was I blown away by his in game coaching in the 2 H2H matchups we had against them the last 2 years? No. But he won both of those games comfortably and looked like he wanted to win both - a pre-season tournament and an NCAAT game - like it was the National Championship. I would trade where ASU's program is under him going into Year 5 for where SJU is currently in an instant.

Again hope SJU gets the best candidate available, and have no idea if that's Bobby. But if it is this program is incredibly lucky to be in a position where it can land a guy like this.

Just a note, when Cluess coached at St. Mary's, for a period of time they were ranked the #1 team in the country, and he was in the top ten for a number of years. Playing and coaching are two different things, as we have just learned (the hard way)

The Honorable Mike Cragg would not have set the dominos in motion by firing Coach Mullin unless he had a plan, a back up plan, and a back up plan to his back up plan.

Mullins firing was not impulsive as occurred when "Suites" Harrington fired Jarvis in early season. Craig puled the trigger after receiving financial commitments and speaking behind the scenes with agent and representatives of one or more coaches.

(With absolutely no inside information whatsoever) I expect an announcement as to who the new St. John's mens basketball coach will be before close of business Monday Ap 15th Think Coach K's coaching tree.
