Bobby Hurley

Great sentiments, P Simmons and I agree.
But the longer Hurley remains silent, the longer the odds we'll get him.
It'll be 48 hours later today since the news that 'Mullin Stepping Down' broke.
Go ahead, laugh but it's obvious Hurley had the word well before then that a change was imminent and he was 'our guy'.
So, I think the Hurley flag will be put away and saved for Duke to one day unfurl.
Meanwhile, lets pour through the lists and get our next HC, fast.
Time is an enemy, as I've mentioned in previous posts.
My family immigrated to NYC when I was about 3 years old. I've lived in Queens, Bronx, and now Manhattan. Have never lived anywhere else. My wife is also a native New Yorker.

I love New York. I really do. But I think this narrative that there's nothing better out there is simply false. Cost of living. Pace of life. Weather. Nature. There's just things you can't get in NYC. Add to that the complexity of family and kids. There are a lot of great cities out there. And knowing friends that have left New York, none want to come back....
I want to come back. Buy me a 3000 sq ft loft in soho and i am there.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Arizona is nice but the NYC area is still nice. You pay for living in or near NYC the biggest city in the world...a global city. Great schools on LI, Westchester, NJ, etc. and extremely low crime in the suburbs. Also the beaches of LI are close. It's funny how so many of the pundits act like Hurley would move to Times Square or something in the middle of the rush. He could have an easy commute living on the beautiful North Shore of LI or in North Jersey. Even Greenwich, CT really. At the end of the day, Arizona is still.....Arizona. You're out in the middle of nowhere. The weather gets to over 100 degrees. Some people like the seasons. College basketball hype in the state is low. ASU's attendance sucked. They will only have students possibly interested but likely not the local public. At SJ we are treated like a pro team when we win big and MSG is sold out. There's just something about the energy and the grit of NYC. Hurley can get a 2nd home in Florida or AZ...he has enough money to work in NY but take vacations to those areas.

Will he have to run this vacation passed you?

A long time ago my company was almost acquired by a company in Tucson. The CEO of that company would always offer new employees a fair starting salary, and then barely raise them year after year. The reason? People loved living in Arizona so much during the winter that they didn't want to move. There's a reason that the population in the US is shifting to warmer climate states.

I'll buy you the loft and you take care of the $5,400 monthly common charges. ;-)

It does seem at least that St. John's is keeping negotiations a secret. This should play out like Cronin to UCLA (surprise announcement) rather than Dixon to UCLA (ugly week of public negotiations).

As noted, the longer this goes on the more unlikely.
Hahaha

I think 5 PM is pretty arbitrary. Friday seems more reasonable.

I’m sure ASU is presenting an extension and/or a raise. Any AD worth his salt would have anticipated that in advance as well as cost of living and income tax differential in addition to a raise plus other streams of income like a basketball camp and other incentives. Perhaps Hurley wants assurances that the facilities will be updated.
Oh 5 PM is definitely arbitrary. Could be 5:33, 6:02, or even later tonight since Bobby is on the west coast. However, I felt that if this didn't happen within the first 2 days then it probably wouldn't ever. I'd expect things to heat up by mid afternoon today and if nothing then I'll start to think he's not coming.

Take Willard for example. I felt the longer that went on, the better for Seton Hall. By day 3 I was pretty confident he'd stay put.

This is the ultimate to each his own conversations. You can find good and bad no matter where you are. Really just a personal choice. I have a place in Florida and I love things there. When in NY plenty to love here. I have a pretty good feeling whoever the new coach, they won’t be living in the Bronx or Queens. Let's just say their experience will be more Upper East Side than riding the E train. LOL

I would caution against over reaction, sometimes these things take time.

The Hoiberg Nebraska situation comes to mind, they officially let go of Miles on 3/26 and Hoiberg wasn't announced until 3/30, though the positive tweets were coming out on the 29th. With that one, everyone knew what was going to happen and it still took 3 days for even the positive confirmations and a 4th day to be made official.

What I would expect in the next 24-48 are reliable sources tweeting one way or another. Right now it's been complete radio silence.

Where else have you lived? I find this close-minded NY superiority stance very frustrating. Most people who leave NY choose not to return. Fran Fraschilla wanted to leave SJU for a college town.

Agree Adam.
It's today or it's not happening.
Obviously hoping we get him.

Mike, trust me, when you get older and especially with a family. your perspective changes. I was born and raised in Queens, went to high school in Manhattan and lived the first 59 years of my life in Queens and New Jersey so fully understand all NY has to offer. Having said that, the only thing that may get me back to NY/NJ after having lived elsewhere is family, specifically my daughters. Hopefully the family ties (along with the money) are important enough to Hurley to get him back there, but I doubt it will be because he doesn't like living in Arizona.

Agree with others time is on the side of the incumbent. Bobby is under a significant contract however, recently extended, so even if this was fairly well orchestrated it takes a little bit of time. Conversations with ASU can't begin in earnest until St. John's officially has a head coaching vacancy.

If this is Plan A, one would hope Cragg spent the nearly 3 weeks since both SJU's and ASU's seasons ended lining this up. Swinging and missing on Plan A - whatever it is - really isn't something SJU can afford, particularly in a thin market. We should know soon.

One note on Bobby, rarely does anyone know you as well as your current employer. If ASU wants to keep him (and fans, local media, etc. share similar sentiment) that is great sign in terms of what SJU would be getting in an HC.

Would be great if SJU could hire someone for a change to alter the conversation for a few years from revolving door debate "should we move on, when should we move on, who should we move on to" to "hope we don't lose this guy."

I grew up in Atlanta, Charlotte, and Raleigh. I moved to NYC for grad school and have remained here since.

Once I have kids I definitely plan to move back South. NYC is a cool experience, but not for me long term. I miss the modernness of Raleigh. The wilderness. Being able to walk outside of my apartment/house and just relax. Too many aspects of NYC are outdated unless you have a ton of money to spend on an apartment.

In fairness, Hurley would have plenty of money to live well here.

I lived on Long Island for 20+ years. I've spent months of my life at a time in the PHX for work. There's zero comparison between the two. Long Island all the way.

Dude, you are freaking out about the Arizona State basketball coach who previously coached at Buffalo and was an assistant at Wagner College. I think this was a smart $ leverage by Hurley but even if he does come here you will just hate him in 12 months away.
Just start typing and saving the I hate Cluess posts so that you can just hit enter next season. Will save you some time.

Just to add to this, I will say that MSG is the best arena out there. My brother went to NC State so I go to their arena pretty often. That, along with the other arenas I have visited like Wells Fargo (Nova), sucked compared to MSG.

Have to assume this will be a factor for Hurley. Only question is how important it is to him.

Interesting. I have a somewhat similar mindset but I am a NY lifer. Born in the same west village apartment that has been in my family since 1926 and that I hope to pass down to my son. I’ve lived in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Spain for two summers Acapulco, Mexico, a farm in Kentucky at various times in my twenties, and a few places in Florida. I have loved living everywhere and can find the good almost anywhere. I’ll be between Florida and NY for the rest of my life. More than two months away from NY and my mental compass is off.

All of this worry and angst about Bobby Hurley. Must be missing something? I feel like I am in that twilight zone episode where the pig people are attractive and attractive people are ugly.
