None of this stuff Cragg’s fault in the least. Mullin had to go and there’s never an easy way to do this. Look how contorted ucla’s search was. Need to give Cragg some time here. He’s the one tasked to repair mistakes of our trusty administration.

I am wondering how all of this really went down. I have been assuming that a conscious decision was made to force Mullin out now. But is it possible that Mullin in fact resigned and that Cragg was truly blindsided by it? I mean, Lavin requested an extension after year 4, was denied, and stuck around for year 5. It is also possible that Cragg wanted to make it work with Mullin?

I don't know the answer. But how it all went down could impact how the next hire is made and what the expectations are from Cragg. ie- if he was truly blindsided by Mullin vs he made a conscious decision to axe Mullin, in which case his next hire needs to be a big deal. You do not axe the face of the program to bring in a Cluess.

None of it is his fault? This all falls on his shoulders. Thats how it works when you're AD in charge. The Hurley rumblings have been around since mid-January and were whispered about way before that. They didn't come out of thin air. He struck out and was caught off guard. You don't have a vision of a world class program with Tim Cluess as it's head. He coould've extended Mullin and incentived his contract and had a buyout clause. Then reasses on a yearly basis. Provided him the support that 3 AD's before him couldn't do or didn't know how to do. If the decision needed to be made to move on then you already have a foundation set from within the administration.

It seems to me Cragg had two options:

1. Extend Mullin
2. Don't extend Mullin

He chose the latter which 95% of the board would have favored. How Mullin reacted was not something Cragg could of predicted or controlled.

If Cragg extended Mullin then most the board would be rioting right now. I'm not sure how else this could've been handled.

Exactly right Linx. If the answer was Tim Cluess, the question never should have been asked.
Agree except for him not knowing what the extension denial would cause.
Perhaps, but some coaches (like Lavin, mentioned above) do choose to stay on. If anything, I thought Cragg was pretty lenient towards Mullin in not forcing him to change ACs.

Lavin wanted to stay on because he wanted to coach his seniors. He also did not recruit because he knew he was getting canned..

The school should have fired him.

I read somewhere that AD's typically have a list of prospective coaches in mind just in case their coach leaves for any reason. Cragg did the right thing by not extending Mullin but should have been ready to jump on his two or three primary targets immediately - the same day that Mullin decided to leave.

and we don't know if Cragg didn't offer those terms and we don't know that CM didn't turn them down. In short none of us knows anything about the Cragg-CM summit unless we get a transcript of same.

im probably being a bit optimistic but its been very quiet (expect for RM.COM) which would make believe there a lot of negations going on to finalize a deal!

So “the buck stops with Mullin” for Ratt A’s mistakes, but Cragg gets a different standard applied to him for carrying out this search like a 7th grade class project? Got it.

If we force Mullin’s resignation for making the NCAA tournament then what is the appropriate punishment for Cragg for this embarassment? Cluess wasn’t going anywhere and has a lower buyout next year. Mullin is being paid anyway. Why not give Mullin the year?

Cragg just cost our basketball program any chance at at successful 2019-20 season and at least three million dollars.

Unless Hurley knows 100% he's staying at ASU, that's a pretty awkward event to speak at tonight for him. Maybe he commits to SJU in the next 4 hours and skips the banquet tonight?

I would argue that losing in he play-in game doesn't really even count as having gotten in. If they had Seton Halls ooc schedule they would have barely made the NIT.

If Mullin demanded an extension then he really made it impossible to keep him on given his production

You know I'm a fan of yours Marillac, but do you have enough of the facts of what went on and what is currently going on to put all this blame on Cragg right now (for what may or may not even be happening)?

Trust in Cragg until he gives us reason not to. Right now it's the absence of information that is bothering many on this board, rather than anything actually worth getting bent out of shape over.

then who did? the tournament committee thought we did, therefore we did deserve it.

Not sure didn't recruit is accurate but if that is a fireable offense ...
