another problem we don’t need. Let’s get a coach who actually wants to be here.[/quote]

Tim Cluess.

No for a few reasons.
Personally not the biggest fan. Might want to stab my eyes watching his teams play.
Buyout is $8M if I recall from UCLA search
And it's his alma mater.

Too early to slam Cragg, since I suspect he may surprise us. Been wrong before, but I’ll hang in there with him “down the stretch”.

Everyone jumped on him after that statement. have to admit I did too. Gotta wait it out.

The more I think about it, I'd love Hurley but not sure he's worth $3 mil at this stage in his career. Pitino definitely not happening especially since the feds just told Louisville they're under investigation. Who does that leave us? Cluess, Scheyer, etc. Honestly think it's risky hiring a guy with no HC experience but anyone is better than Mullin and will at least work their butt off. Hurley may be surprised if he thinks he's a shoe-in for the Duke job. He's far from ready for that. He's been good with ASU but nothing amazing. He still has a lot to prove and I thought him bringing SJ back would be just what he needed to prove it, but he's probably too much at this point. Cluess just seems like a dry old guy even if he is good at coaching IMO. In this day in age you need a guy who is energetic and a salesman to close on recruits.

The market is soft man. Was saying it before the job opened up. Not seeing names coming out of the woodwork.

It's amazing how fast the roster was depleted (from one scholarship over the limit to 12 walk-ons.. I hope there was a definitive plan in place before this month began so SJU can hire a coach, who can then re-recruit some of the team's current roster. The kids are going to start to commit elsewhere next week. My guess, this is a big travel weekend for the team. Before you know it, the new coach will have the same excuse about the depleted roster as Mullin had when he was hired.

Then Cragg should have thought of that before. The fan base will destroy anyone less than a compelling hire.

Are you serious?
12 walk ons?
For God's sake 2 JUCO's decommitted. One was never making it to campus.
Trimble left and most people wanted him gone.
Simon left and he could have left anyway as a grad transfer.

Why is this a big travel weekend for the team? Did the semester end????

There will still be some others to leave and there will be people to come in. Likely grad transfers to hold the team above water. No first year coach is coming in here and with one brush stroke at this stage of the game with out roster construction working wonders.

The fan base will destroy any hire.
Did you want a reset? Then can't complain about a reset.
If you didn't want a reset then fine you can complain.

Fordham knows way more than me, but just a guess that it comes down to how much he will contribute to get Hurley here. Obviously SJ can't afford this alone. Would need huge boost by donors. Wonder what the breaking point is for ASU when they say "ok we're out you can have him". I think too much is made of Arizona being warm and nice. Of course it's beautiful but again Hurley makes over 10x more than probably 99% of us on here. He's rich...he can get to a nice area whenever he wants. I think he'd be just fine in a mansion on the north shore of Nassau with much better schools if he has kids. Arizona doesn't have close to the schools suburban NYC does. Also probably just as safe if not safer than AZ...nothing ever happens on the north shore lol. Believe it or not, some people like the change of seasons. Sorry to ramble, but like I said Arizona is just Arizona. No Broadway, no major attractions, no media, no beaches...it's a place you go to retire not coach college hoops IMO.

Mike, no knock on anyone, but following Moose “tea leaves” on this seems prudent.

The fan base should not destroy any hire - but they will. They should be supportive, but the fan base probably won't be.

I did not want Lavin canned, even though to me he was not a good coach at all, and he seemingly gave up on recruiting, but I could see the arguments getting rid of Lavin. I wanted to give Lavin a few more years.

I definitely did not want Mullin canned. I thought he could fix what he had messed up to date:
1. Only one recruiter out on the trail.
2. No big men / No offensive rebounding. Not recruiting athletic big men that could offensively board.

The fact that the fan base basically ran him out of town irritates me, because the problems were very fixable. Many forget that, at times, the teams played very pretty basketball. The team was literally one or two big men away from being good.

I definitely wanted Mullin to get more years.

I will support the next guy. However, the next guy is almost certainly screwed, and in four years, I won't want him canned. I will be advocating then that guy should get more years. We can't keep on turning over the coaches. It just doesn't work. I don't understand the fan-base thinking.

Admittedly, I don't want Cluess, because I think he'll get the short end of the stick from the 'fans'. I would only want some coach that I think would satisfy the fan base and keep the wolves at bay. Any coach we hire needs a lot of time.

The hell with reading tea leaves. I want coffee bean answers. They are stronger, and helps with the migraine I am getting reading posts that make flat earthers appear logical.

I am in no hurry. These candidates all suck. Well the realistic ones anyway. Cluess clearly best worst candidate

I don’t think Lavin is a great coach by any means. But if he was retained, imo we would be in better shape today. I see us taking another gamble and I do hope that gamble pays off but wouldn’t be surprised if we are repeating this whole process in 4-5 years. Looking for a new AD and new coach.

Makes a lot of sense Paultz. Cragg left cushy gig at Duke after so many years for a reason, presumably with eyes wide open to challenges at SJU. Would imagine he viewed this exact decision as big part of that, and would be surprising if he didn't appreciate magnitude not just of decision, but nuance associated with moving on from program legend in connection with doing so. There was going to be risk associated with this hire for Cragg no matter what, but being the guy that pushed Mullin out (even if the right decision) adds another element entirely. All I really care about is him getting the hire right, but if he doesn't the "we moved on from Mullin off an NCAAT for this" will not be background noise.

I’d be happy with either Hurley or cluess.
