Bobby Hurley

Didn't Keita and Roberts also express interest in leaving? I also assume that it is common for coaches to reach out to players on other teams that are "vulnerable".

Expressed interest yes. You really care if Keita leaves? I bet he isn't around when all is said and done but would it matter. Besides he already transferred once. Shows where his head is.
The roster construction is horrible. It's a main reason Mullin is gone.

Too early to slam Cragg, since I suspect he may surprise us. Been wrong before, but I’ll hang in there with him “down the stretch”.
Makes a lot of sense Paultz. Cragg left cushy gig at Duke after so many years for a reason, presumably with eyes wide open to challenges at SJU. Would imagine he viewed this exact decision as big part of that, and would be surprising if he didn't appreciate magnitude not just of decision, but nuance associated with moving on from program legend in connection with doing so. There was going to be risk associated with this hire for Cragg no matter what, but being the guy that pushed Mullin out (even if the right decision) adds another element entirely. All I really care about is him getting the hire right, but if he doesn't the "we moved on from Mullin off an NCAAT for this" will not be background noise.
Great post

Other supposed candidates getting more posts this thread falling down the thread list so just thought I'd offer a theory. Got to think Hurley still a viable candidate because the buzz has been out there for quite a while and usually when schools give a new deal to retain a coach it is done quickly and no announcement yet from ASU. When rumors of a Mullin buy-out hit and AD issued denial there were still negotiations going on and two days later it seemed like a done deal and was announced a day later. Hopefully formal negotiations were started after we officially had an opening and will be concluded shortly. My out is like recruiting these situations are fluid and can change at any moment.

The main reason Mullin is gone is because of a TOXIC fanbase. The main reason for our current bloodletting is rooted in that same cause. Period.

He's our #1 candidate until something leaks that he either accepted an ASU extensions or is signing with St. John's. It's been complete radio silence on both aspects, which means one or both sides are still working. Cragg has been reaching out to other candidates, which is perfectly normal. We are so used to eggs all in one basket that we are jumping at every little thing. It's common in any kind of workplace to look at other options.

If Hurley signs all is moot, if he stays at ASU, at least Cragg will be ahead of the news and have another candidate lined up and ready to accept.

As a reminder to those who are criticizing Cragg for not acting fast enough, it took 5 days after the announcement of Lavin's departure to announce Mullin's hire. Contracts get marked up, lawyers have to go back and forth multiple times, etc. It wouldn't be surprising or unreasonable for this to take another couple days to play out.

Yes a toxic fanbase. You got it. That's the reason!
The more I think about it, I'd love Hurley but not sure he's worth $3 mil at this stage in his career. Pitino definitely not happening especially since the feds just told Louisville they're under investigation. Who does that leave us? Cluess, Scheyer, etc. Honestly think it's risky hiring a guy with no HC experience but anyone is better than Mullin and will at least work their butt off. Hurley may be surprised if he thinks he's a shoe-in for the Duke job. He's far from ready for that. He's been good with ASU but nothing amazing. He still has a lot to prove and I thought him bringing SJ back would be just what he needed to prove it, but he's probably too much at this point. Cluess just seems like a dry old guy even if he is good at coaching IMO. In this day in age you need a guy who is energetic and a salesman to close on recruits.
Hire CLuess and spend $2 million on seat backs :) Zaun ecstatic.

again I trust Mike Cragg and will until proven otherwise
He is experienced with a top of the line program
He came here openly and eagerly to face this very challenge

Much is hidden and quiet as it should be for now

I trust he has a mature and viable approach to this matter of transition into a new coaching regime - and that he already had several possibilities lined up - which is good so people (like Hurley) won't get too complacent or comfortable thinking there are our only option - no one holds all the cards
having e.g. Cluess in the ball game could help Hurley to ____ or get off the pot

I am patient, I like what I see and sense thus far - Thanks Mike - in your own time and pace
let's get it done
GO Storm!

This ignores the fact that you don’t pay 4 mill to buyout Mullin and burn bridges with the face of the program to hire Tim Cluess (and pay another 7-figure buyout) and likely lose the 19-20 season. You only do something that drastic for a guy like Hurley — and only when you have assurances he would accept.

Hurley is my first choice and Cluess #2.
I think Hurley would be the perfect choice: young, hungry, aggressive recruiter, and a solid HC with high visibility in the NY Metro.
Perfect.
But upfront, I'll take the other side on Hurley at this time and hope I'm wrong.
Seems likely to me that Cragg, through back channels or whatever, reached out to BH when he knew Matt was gone, likely more than a week ago and things crystallized when Mack de-committed.
And we've had the local AZ press imply that Bobby is staying put and Wednesday morning he put the Sun Devils through a workout.
I know the guy is a workaholic, but do you do that if 1 foot is out the door or do you have your ACs do that?
So, at this point, I think 'no news' is bad news but we shall see and, again, i truly hope I'm wrong.

Leitao came back.
Can Lavin ;)

Someone on this board--I believe it was Beast--pointed out that our last 3 hires, Mullin, Lavin and Roberts were all poor bench coaches. That model just isn't working.

How could be anyone be sure Mullin was paid $4 million to resign.? Let's give the benefit of doubt to a man who loved STJ as much as he did. After all he resigned ,he was not fired. I have to give C.M. more class , I believe he tried to make the termination as friendly as possible.

The biggest mistake we could make is limiting our search to the four people mentioned most often.

Cragg has to vet and negotiate. It is imperative he makes a better hire than Lavin and Mullin. Otherwise why leave a cushy job at Duke?

I trust that Cragg will get this right.
My problem though is, I do not think we have the 'time' to search the canvas beyond what we've ID'd.
The roster has sprung major leaks.
A total re-set would be revisiting the 2014-15 nightmare and all the gyrations that ensued and impacted us to this day.
Lets hope we get good news soon.

Cragg sent out message after message about attendance this year.
A season like 4 years ago, it will be a ghost town again this year.
Cant do such to a fan base every four/five years and expect no pushback and mass exodus at season ticketholder level
