(Baha Mar Hoops) #13 Baylor, Thu., Nov. 21, 7p, CBSSN

Zuby really blew it last night. Not only were those 2 missed free throws unacceptable, I think him not pulling the ball out and running the clock down on one of those last possessions was even worse.

Where is the basketball IQ? He tries to score over someone w/ 25 seconds left on the shot clock when we are up.

That was the play that lost us the gsme. Just stupid, stupid basketball.

Losing to Baylor while no disgrace means we lost to a Big 12 team on a CBS network, FF's network, and I've gotten into Twitter dialogue with our former coach, who sings the praises of the Big 12 and diminishes the accomplishments of the Big East. Weird for a Brooklyn guy.

Who else was supposed to be in if Brady is hurt? I'm not putting VInce, Prey, Glover, #2, or the Greek in ahead of Zuby.
Zuby was beyond exhausted and Baylor was going to FOUL. A blind coach could see that. You put in a fresh player who could handle the ball better and those would include Prey, Glover or the Greek kid. Baylor had an injured freshman in the game!
It was a coaching decision that cost the team a win and demoralized Zuby who played his heart out.

Friday 9 am here . There are lots of places to lament about last night.
Why let Pitino off the hook for a Coaching mistake that CYO Coaches wouldn’t make and have Zuby in the game in those last 6.5 seconds ? Baylor’s only option was to foul and he shouldn’t have been anywhere near the ball.
Plus , it was designed for Smith to get the inbound but , he pulled back at the last second and it went to Zuby . Why ?

Next , our 2nd half collapse was catastrophic . Baylor ratcheted up their intensity and while , I wouldn’t say we wilted , we were darn close .

Our 3 point defense is pitiful , as it has been under Pitino , Anderson , Mullin , Lavin , etc
It must be a curse for past misdeeds .

I don’t recall if it was the end of regulation or the 1 st OT but , VJ had a wide open shot from the corner that barely missed . None of our players were within miles of him . How come ?

Richmond ? He’s our Million Dollar Man . He was suppose to be the guy to lead us to great heights .Pitino even mentioning he needed more Conditioning last week is not a accolade . And , he was spent in crunch time with cramps , etc
Plus ,let’s face it , his handle is a weakness as is his shooting from range . It’s why he’s playing for NIL money and not in the NBA . He is a amazing passer , no disputes he has many skills .

And , let’s stop with the nostalgia of kids playing College Basketball anymore . Both teams last night were loaded with highly paid professionals . Some of who have already played for 3 or more teams ..Moving along like they are Free Agents like MLB , NFL, NBA players .

Lastly , Pitino wasn’t paid the money he is getting to be Competitive . He was brought here to Win , at the level St John’s hasn’t seen in over 2 Decades . The School fired Anderson , while still under Contract , to pay Pitino millions to come here . Not to be Iona but, to get us to a BE Championship level and into the NCAA tournament .

And , as I said previously , this Tournament ,other than the quality of teams invited was all Minor League . Very weak Officiating team , slippery like ice floor , only hand towels to wipe the Court , amateur Clock operators .

Winning this game would have been a giant step toward attaining higher ranked status and a path to the NCAA , all things being equal .

So far , beating Wagner , Fordham don’t get us any value . The New Mexico win is still to be determined , depending on what kind of season the Lobos have . Beating Baylor would have been that giant step .

Losing like we did last night , is like the Horse who finishes 2 nd by a nose in the Kentucky Derby . No one will say what a great loss that was in March , when the Tourney teams are selected . No one will remember, except that it was a loss .

Did you expect to win every game? There is no shame in losing to the 13th ranked team on a neutral court. Sure it was heartbreaking, but it is okay to move on.

My problem with the inbound was I see teams all the time draw something up to get the player they want the ball. And in our case it should have been Aaron Scott. 5/6 from 3 and 3/4 from the line. I am living or dying with him in that spot. Get him the ball and and force Baylor to foul. It just didn't seem like we knew who we wanted to go to

think Baylor did a good job of "allowing" Zuby to get open... that who they wanted to get the ball. Would not have had RJ inbounding it either... He's been solid from the line.

Anyone know if the Clock not starting off RJ's tip can be reviewed? could Rick have had these guys look at that?

I’m not sure Richmond fits with this team. It seems everyone is flying around and he is running in quicksand. Maybe that will change after they get a few games under their belt.
He needs to hit the gym on his way to collecting his check! He doesn't look like he can play 40 minutes of college basketball.........can't imagine him playing an NBA schedule.
I've yet to see him play a full game of basketball. DJ Lewis is a better player and will demand Kadary bucks if he stays next season.

++ Scott should have been the target.

That was a key moment that no one is talking about.

Bottom line. A horrible loss that will be posted about years from now but at the start of the season I hoped this team could be a top twenty team come Jan. After last night I think they can be better than that.
Agree... they got the players/talent to make it happen... just have to keep the Attitude/mindset correct... That will be seen tonight

The play was clearly designed to get Smith the ball on a comeback type route but the guy guarding the inbounder (Omier I believe) had that route covered. Smith had the right instinct in cutting to the middle because it was open but Zuby saw the same thing and did the same.

Zuby's role in that play should have just been to run a straight line to the rim to clear his man out and let the other guys operate in more space. There was no reason for him to stay in the backcourt and go for the pass.

Pitino's not even in the top 20 of the highest paid coaches. Of course, his situation is unique and because of that, we got him at a bargain basement price. But's it's not like the school opened up the vault to pay Pitino.

To me this was a team loss. Not any one individual, but the TEAM.

The game was lost on the boards. Baylor had 83 shots, us 62
Baylor had 16 offensive rebounds, us 9.

They just outhustled us. We seemingly had the taller team, they the hungrier.

I think Pitino is a great coach but, in this case, while I am sure that this will probably not be a popular opinion, the loss is absolutely his fault IMO.

When you're up 5 with 18 seconds left, you have scored enough points to win the game. You should have your best combination of ball handlers and free throw shooters on the court. I love Zuby but he shouldn't have been out there at that time because he doesn't fit either criteria. Of course, nothing is guaranteed but I would have liked our chances of making at least one of the two free throws a whole lot more with someone else on the line. That's all we needed to guarantee the win.
Fair points. I stated, right before Zuby's free throws, that I would take our players off the line. I would've placed them near half court and had them immediately ready defensively.

And physically stronger, pulling rebounds and loose balls out of our hands without fouling.
