Had to check:
In basketball, the game clock starts after a free throw when the ball is legally touched by a player after an unsuccessful free throw or a missed free throw. The shot clock starts when a player takes possession.
It only takes 2.5 seconds for a player to go end to end.
Zuby felt the pressure after missing the first of two, and missed badly on the second. Devon defended the shot well.
I don't feel it was a devastating loss. We played a very good Baylor team dead even, and it came down to 2 free throws and Baylor nailing a very tough good look at the buzzer.
It was in my memory a lot like the Syracuse loss at Alumni Hall except we had an 85%;ft shooter on the line in that one (Rencher). Louis Orr made a buzzer beating layup in that one.
When we elected Rencher to the Hall of Fame two years ago, when we finalized the inductees, Kathy Meehan smiled and said "But he should have made those free throws" without giving specifics. We all knew and all laughed.
Having said that, the game was between #5 SJU and #2 Syracuse and the other three top 5 teams had lost that week. When hated Syracuse called timeout to ice Rencher, in jubilant realization of that fact, in unison the sold out crowd loudly chanted "We're number one!" A few seconds later almost dead silent disbelief.
This game doesn't come close to that for me. The next two are the sweater game and FF losses to hated Georgetown. No hate for Baylor here. No rivalry. Just a very tough loss.
