(Baha Mar Hoops) #13 Baylor, Thu., Nov. 21, 7p, CBSSN

Up five with 18 seconds to go and lost. Pitino’s fault?
I think Pitino is a great coach but, in this case, while I am sure that this will probably not be a popular opinion, the loss is absolutely his fault IMO.

When you're up 5 with 18 seconds left, you have scored enough points to win the game. You should have your best combination of ball handlers and free throw shooters on the court. I love Zuby but he shouldn't have been out there at that time because he doesn't fit either criteria. Of course, nothing is guaranteed but I would have liked our chances of making at least one of the two free throws a whole lot more with someone else on the line. That's all we needed to guarantee the win.

As we saw last year, close losses to good teams count for nothing on selection Sunday
Yup. No moral victories. Not now. This was supposed to be the year we win that game. Hall under Willard beat I think #7 Maryland and a few other huge OOC teams. Marq dominated top 10 Purdue. But we can never get over hump. We flirt. We tease. But we will always let you down in the biggest games. The St. John’s way. In another universe we win that, crack top 15, go on to Elite 8, record applications & donations, etc. In reality watch us sweat on Selection Sunday.

The announcers commented that st johns did a great job making baylor use 12 seconds to get off a very tough 3 (which they made) 5 points is a 2 possession game. Baylor had the ball with 18 seconds left and made two very contested 3s to win it

All.in all up until the last five mins of regulation refs let the guys play and bang and didnt call a lot of fouls on contact. The. It seemed that they called a bunch on us and few on them. Zuby got knocked down on way to hoop and so did Devon woth no call.

Zuby was the most dominant big man on the floor vs. Top competition and not a mid major. Proved himself. His footwork around the basket 100% better than last year.

Aaron drained 5 threes.

We bounced back to force 2 overtimes when it looked like the game was slipping away.

First half was dominant. Most of second hald we gave it up in regulation but didnt fold.

Even with a subpar Khadary we still hung tough.

And most of all guessing the Abbatiello family was there to watch it.
Sorry Beast perhaps Zuby improved offensively but his defensive rebounding remains an issue and is partly responsible for the team giving up 32 offensive rebounds and 38 second chance points in the last two games. A “dominant” big man does not give up that many offensive boards.

And you would think with all those assistant coaches on the bench, someone would have figured that out?

As someone pointed out after the game, if we win games against UVA and a tough Georgia team this weekend we will be 6-1 and still be in the top 25 and possibly in the top 20 come Monday. Not time yet for doomsday stuff. Next two very important though.

You would think (LOL)
To me, it was crystal clear
Have five guards on the floor who can handle the ball and make a damn free throw because everyone knew that Baylor had to foul us
But what do I know? I was only a HS basketball coach 40 years ago. Our coaching staff should know better than me

Thread eerily giving me flashbacks to the UConn loss in the BE tourney last year. Many posters reveling in the fact that we played a good team tough.
No, we played a game we should have won, but managed to find multiple ways to yet again lose. But it’s OK, it was the refs fault. Everyone reveled in bringing Pitino in to WIN these games, we have the talent to do it, we did last year too, hopefully it eventually happens.

There are no reliable free throw shooters on this team. Zuby was in for a lot of reasons. He is a big target if you are having trouble inbounding. If Baylor steals the ball, he is there to defend. Some wanted Dunlap in. That cold have ended up Max Hooper all over again. Especially with Baylor's aggressiveness and the refs calling nothing on them. If Richmond gets the inbound and blows the free throws, then posters would complain he should not have been in.

Games like this don't get you better. They crush your spirit. All in all I'm sick. This is the exact same shit show as the Michigan and BC losses...only shittier.
Rick post-game quote

On the importance of tonight’s hard fought, double overtime game against Baylor…
“The only time there’s value is when you win. When you lose, there's no value to it.

I don’t think anyone is reveling.

But the difference between this and that UConn game, is right now, it is November. Brutal loss last night but there’s no saying it will define our season. Maybe it will. But we don’t know yet.

I feel like there’s this constant push and pull on this site between fans who approach sports differently. I feel like you have a very hard nosed approach where if we lose, there’s no other takeaway other than the fact that we lost and losing sucks. And that’s fair.

But I contend that it’s fair as well for fans to see how we played and take a glass half full approach. Despite the loss and how much it hurt, and despite the fact that there are several things the team can work on, this team has a lot going for it. And there is time and opportunity to move on from this and make it a great year. And I think it will be.

late in the game or maybe first OT, Kadary drives the lane, easily beats his man, throws up a wild layup that misses by a lot. Should have been an easy deuce and difference in the game. Mink-man and Mahoney bemoaned that miss on the radio call.

I sure hope he's not like that kid we all played with, or against, in the playground with a great motor who could get to the basket with ease, but when he got there clanked it with an erratic finish.

Friday 9 am here . There are lots of places to lament about last night.
Why let Pitino off the hook for a Coaching mistake that CYO Coaches wouldn’t make and have Zuby in the game in those last 6.5 seconds ? Baylor’s only option was to foul and he shouldn’t have been anywhere near the ball.
Plus , it was designed for Smith to get the inbound but , he pulled back at the last second and it went to Zuby . Why ?

Next , our 2nd half collapse was catastrophic . Baylor ratcheted up their intensity and while , I wouldn’t say we wilted , we were darn close .

Our 3 point defense is pitiful , as it has been under Pitino , Anderson , Mullin , Lavin , etc
It must be a curse for past misdeeds .

I don’t recall if it was the end of regulation or the 1 st OT but , VJ had a wide open shot from the corner that barely missed . None of our players were within miles of him . How come ?

Richmond ? He’s our Million Dollar Man . He was suppose to be the guy to lead us to great heights .Pitino even mentioning he needed more Conditioning last week is not a accolade . And , he was spent in crunch time with cramps , etc
Plus ,let’s face it , his handle is a weakness as is his shooting from range . It’s why he’s playing for NIL money and not in the NBA . He is a amazing passer , no disputes he has many skills .

And , let’s stop with the nostalgia of kids playing College Basketball anymore . Both teams last night were loaded with highly paid professionals . Some of who have already played for 3 or more teams ..Moving along like they are Free Agents like MLB , NFL, NBA players .

Lastly , Pitino wasn’t paid the money he is getting to be Competitive . He was brought here to Win , at the level St John’s hasn’t seen in over 2 Decades . The School fired Anderson , while still under Contract , to pay Pitino millions to come here . Not to be Iona but, to get us to a BE Championship level and into the NCAA tournament .

And , as I said previously , this Tournament ,other than the quality of teams invited was all Minor League . Very weak Officiating team , slippery like ice floor , only hand towels to wipe the Court , amateur Clock operators .

Winning this game would have been a giant step toward attaining higher ranked status and a path to the NCAA , all things being equal .

So far , beating Wagner , Fordham don’t get us any value . The New Mexico win is still to be determined , depending on what kind of season the Lobos have . Beating Baylor would have been that giant step .

Losing like we did last night , is like the Horse who finishes 2 nd by a nose in the Kentucky Derby . No one will say what a great loss that was in March , when the Tourney teams are selected . No one will remember, except that it was a loss .

1987 NCAA Tournament vs DePaul, had a 5 point lead under 1 minute to go. Inexplicable fouls by Baldi and Bross put the refs in position to turn a blind eye to Comegys lane violation. Eventually lose in OT, ending Mark Jackson and Willie Glass college career.
IMHO, the worst/most gut wrenching loss I can recall as a Johnnies fan. Especially, considering what was at stake (a chance at advancing to the Sweet 16). I was at two childhood friends' home (they're brothers and Hoya fans), and felt damn good about us finishing off DePaul during final seconds. I remember being pissed while walking home after the game. I couldn't wrapper my mind how we lost that game. I actually started hating DePaul for a few years afterwards.
