(Baha Mar Hoops) #13 Baylor, Thu., Nov. 21, 7p, CBSSN

Don’t agree with the .05 second they put on the clock. Clock stops after the ball goes through the hoop, not as it’s on the way? Clearly another second could have been taken off? Officiating sucked last night

After a sleepless f-ing nigh, having been a die hard fan for over 50 years, I’m trying to think back to a loss more devastating then this one, where we had a 5 point lead with seconds to go and lost the game. I can’t think of one can any of you?

LUCKILY three at the end and missed free throws! Wasn’t our night

Another issue I have is they only seem to check the clock if one of the teams happened to have called a timeout. Otherwise play would have just continued without a check. The inconsistency is maddening.

Here’s another thought. When the refs checked to see if the ball was released prior to time running out do they ever review the clock?? Surely they must have realized when there are 4 seconds to go and a free throw is missed and the ball is jiggled around and then passed to another player that time should have run out of time prior to a decent shot?????

Just so hard to stomach a loss like this. Especially because with all of the mistakes and sloppiness, St John's still deserved to win. But they lost because of two prayer 3 pointers that were thrown up at the end and happened to go in. This will sting for awhile.
To quote William Munny (Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven), "deserve has nothing to do with it"

The elite eight game where Scoonie Penn hip checks Barkley and steals the ball on the last possession as SJU is going for the win after making a comeback.

That was more devastating because they can come back from this in November. Similar to the triple OT loss to Duke at the Garden.
Chances to win, but it made them a better team in the end.

Had to check:

In basketball, the game clock starts after a free throw when the ball is legally touched by a player after an unsuccessful free throw or a missed free throw. The shot clock starts when a player takes possession.

It only takes 2.5 seconds for a player to go end to end.

Zuby felt the pressure after missing the first of two, and missed badly on the second. Devon defended the shot well.

I don't feel it was a devastating loss. We played a very good Baylor team dead even, and it came down to 2 free throws and Baylor nailing a very tough good look at the buzzer.

It was in my memory a lot like the Syracuse loss at Alumni Hall except we had an 85%;ft shooter on the line in that one (Rencher). Louis Orr made a buzzer beating layup in that one.

When we elected Rencher to the Hall of Fame two years ago, when we finalized the inductees, Kathy Meehan smiled and said "But he should have made those free throws" without giving specifics. We all knew and all laughed.

Having said that, the game was between #5 SJU and #2 Syracuse and the other three top 5 teams had lost that week. When hated Syracuse called timeout to ice Rencher, in jubilant realization of that fact, in unison the sold out crowd loudly chanted "We're number one!" A few seconds later almost dead silent disbelief.

This game doesn't come close to that for me. The next two are the sweater game and FF losses to hated Georgetown. No hate for Baylor here. No rivalry. Just a very tough loss.

If that game wasn’t a perfect microcosm for our program last 25 yrs idk what is. Good start to year, knock off good NM team, leading up to maybe our biggest OOC game in maybe decades…90%+ chance to win with seconds left and lose on a buzzer beating 3 that should never have even counted due to refs not starting clock properly.

This was very likely the only opportunity to beat a major ranked team OOC. Now we won’t get TN either. Once again we will have TONS of pressure to beat the top Big East teams if we want to get a good seed or even make NCAAT at all.

As devastating as this game was, probably the most ever I’ve seen, I just have to laugh too. This program could not win a big OOC game with LeBron, MJ, and Coach K coaching. It’s one of the many reasons our brand has become an afterthought last 25 yrs. We are the 50 yr old woman who watches all her friends get married over the decades but our turn never comes. We always lose games like this and put pressure on that could’ve been avoided. And how is it that EVERY OTHER team has no issue with FT’s? We should have kids demonstrate FT ability before signing them at this point.

Last 3 big OOC games (I think):

Heartbreaker L to Indiana

Blown out by Michigan

Heartbreaker L at buzzer to Baylor

We simply cannot get to the next level.

Oh right I forgot that one in the elite eight and of course the other, as Beast mentioned, at Alumni Hall when we were fighting the Cuse for a Big East championship, Rencher missed the free throw, Looie didn’t have us set up defensively and it was like a lay up drill at the other end for a Cuse win.

Wait there was another when Ernie D and Bad News Barnes came to town and Barnes took four steps (no call) to make a lay up at the buzzer for a Providence win.

After sleeping on it, I’m ready to be (somewhat) optimistic

A brutal loss that none of us will forget for a long time. But this is still a very good team and I think last night will be an experience that can teach this group what is needed to finish off big games against the big boys. We have to be tougher with the ball. We have to keep up our defensive intensity from start to finish. We have to make key free throws.

We didn't have our best player for the second OT. We should have won the game any way, but I said this after the Wagner and New Mexico game, Kadary brings a calming presence to the court that we needed for those final seconds IMO. I am not letting anyone off the hook but it is important to keep that in mind. On top of that, I already said my piece about the clock operator. It is what it is. Point is, we did things to blow that game but also caught a couple bad breaks as well (Kadary cramps, clock).

It is time to flush this one and look at what is still ahead of us. We have an opportunity to get through non conference with our only loss being a 2OT thriller on a neutral court against a top team. There are 4 other really good teams in the Big East so there will be 8 opportunities in conference play to beef up our resume. That's more than enough. Virginia, Georgia and KState may not be world beaters but you never know how the season is going to play out. Collecting wins against P5 schools will be vital. I believe in this team and think we can grow from this. It is November.

I feel awful for Zubs but I know he will use this as fuel. I am not killing a kid for being short on a couple free throws after playing the bulk of a 2OT slugfest. It was unclutch but we move on

Now here’s a real concern…..

The Johnnies have allowed 32 offensive rebounds and 38 second-chance points in the last two games.

How can a well coached team with the size the Johnnie’s have allow this????
