Asst coach discussion

No thank you on either of this players
We need a lead guard badly, but if the plan turns out to be cobbling together a backcourt with a couple new combo guards while waiting for Curbelo, I'm OK with that.
Agree fully but if CMA could get the number 17 juco kid who he was previously recruiting for next season who has 2 years left that would be fantastic. That way there would even be less pressure on AC on day 1, but still good minutes to play as a freshman. Boy have I become greedy these last 48 hours.

Neither of those kids look like lead guards. The first kid shot 35% from the field. Neither had impressive stats at low majors. If the staff disagrees and recruits them I’ll give them the benefit of doubt for a year.

RMN, LJSA, Gman -

the bottom line from all this discussion about staff possibilities (which I leave to those of you with obvious greater understanding of staff needs than I have) it surely puts into perspective how handicapped we were until this week - I am surprised we had as many decent players as we did!
one blessing when you have such a limited 2015-19 recruiting staff - much easier to improve upon!

I know we are all excited and anticipating and we might just be pleasantly surprised! We might not have to wait for a rebuild - next year's team could (I know, no guarantees, we shall see) be as successful as this year's team that was supposed to be top 3 BE.
I am enthused about what has occurred - and the newly found buzz, enthusiasm on this board.
Why we have come alive!!!
(What's the buzz tell me what's a happening - the Wiz)

I know. I was lumping them into the combo guard category.

Javion Hamlet , #17 of Top 100 JUCO, is the kid’s name, big rangy PG would be a great get, and Javon Franklin, also on CMAs radar at Arkansas, and ranked #22, a 6’7” PF, looks interesting as well.

Great news, thanks. By all accounts a great recruiter and will be a head coach somewhere down the line.

Yes, TJ deciding to go ahead and come along instead of taking a mid-major or D2 head coaching job is great news. He's a real asset. TJ is the guy behind all the JUCO recruiting success that CMA has had. I don't know if there's a coach in the country that has more JUCO connections than TJ, he usually gets who he wants more times than not from the JUCO ranks.

Also, I was reading earlier in the thread guys were trying to figure out his relationship to Coach Anderson. TJ is CMA's nephew. He's been with Coach Anderson since UAB when he started out as a video coordinator. TJ has worked his way up, there's been no nepotism there. He's going to be a head coach somewhere sooner than later.

Any chance we reach out to Mack again?

TJ Cleveland is following him on twitter, but don't know when that started Paultz seems to think he's going elsewhere, so I'll trust him.

Possibly, but from everything I've been reading he looks like he's Nebraska bound. I would start looking at Javion Hamlett, now that TJ is on staff.

Great insight, thanks. Nobody here (including our sports writers) would have known anything about him. He sounds like a great addition to the staff. Having some continuity is necessary for a coach that has recruited very well in recent years.

Is there anyone else from his Arkansas staff that you think should be brought over? I know during our coaching search, we were looking at a few AC candidates already (Marc Hsu and Andy Borman).

That’s fine with me. From things I’ve read about Cam, we would’ve been on the edge of our seats for both great plays and maybe ‘personal drama’ stuff.

Melvin Watkins would be the only other possibility. He was the Associate Head Coach at Arkansas and been with Coach Anderson since his Mizzou days, there's a Razorback fan that usually has good info that says Watkins won't be coming over, there's been rumors last couple of years he was close to retirement. So, we'll see what happens there. The fact that his name didn't come up today with TJ's leads me to lean towards he won't be coming either.

I think Hsu looks very likely, both he and TJ are following each other on twitter, and I noticed Hsu started following some of the recruits that TJ had been following, so I think it may just be a matter of time before he's added. And of course we've heard about Boreman, I think he could be the final assistant after he's done with the AAU session.

I can echo what you are seeing via Hsu on Twitter - in the last week he has started following some SJU fan accounts, TJ Cleveland, Mike Cragg, and an Arkansas Recruiting Inside.

Tea Leaves seem to be pointing toward Hsu joining the staff, or at least conversations being had.

Hsu is following Javion Hamlet on Twitter FWIW.

Also following a bunch of St. John's stuff. Seems like it's happening soon.

No ty, keep his mom far away.
Ty.

Tomorrow will be a week since CMA was hired. So far we have just one assistant on board in TJ Cleveland, and maybe another hand shake agreement with Borman to come aboard after the AAU season? From the looks of the past few days maybe Hsu isn't the slam dunk we all thought he was.

With all the players on the transfer market, available during the late signing period, and our own roster in flux I would have thought CMA would have already had a full staff in place. I'm not worried but this weekend I figured by Tuesday we would have had a whole lot more clarity on the coaching staff. Here's hoping this gets resolved soon.
