Asst coach discussion
Tomorrow will be a week since CMA was hired. So far we have just one assistant on board in TJ Cleveland, and maybe another hand shake agreement with Borman to come aboard after the AAU season? From the looks of the past few days maybe Hsu isn't the slam dunk we all thought he was.

With all the players on the transfer market, available during the late signing period, and our own roster in flux I would have thought CMA would have already had a full staff in place. I'm not worried but this weekend I figured by Tuesday we would have had a whole lot more clarity on the coaching staff. Here's hoping this gets resolved soon.
Ironically I don't think Arkansas and new coach Musselman has a staff yet, besides holdover Scotty Thurman.

Mussleman is going to hire HSU as part of package deal with LJ. That's a prediction, not based on discussions with either LJ or HSU.

Figueroa is a very good all around player and I will be disappointed if he does leave; but IMO, he is not nearly good enough to use as "leverage" to force a hire or for a school to hire anyone as an AC just to get his commitment. One other point; I don't believe Anderson has a prior relationship with either Hsu or Borman so the idea both were going to be "forced" on him smells of more of the same "mom and pop" interference. I don't think there is any way they both come here but that is just a feeling, no info at all. Borman I certainly know of and I think will be an excellent addition because I have heard he is coming. I know nothing about Hsu but it would seem to me if he were such a home run he would have something better on his resume than NMSU and Western Kentucky. Again, speaking out of ignorance of his track record, just a supposition.

Why don’t you check out the articles about Char’es Basseys Guardian who brought him to WKU. Not very kosher to say the least.

I am as antsy as anybody on the Board to complete our Staff and go full bore to stabilize and fill out the roster.
Hsu seems like he is using LJ as a 'chip' for leverage that I'm guessing will not succeed for him here.
I feel badly for LJ IF he is being 'played' like that.
But, it'll be what it'll be.
But Mike Anderson has won wherever he has been.
He'll work hard and he'll win here.
For once, I'll bring a little bit of 'pacienza' to the table.
Lol.

Vinny Pacienza? Good boxer. But why bring him to the table?

I misspelled it! It's 'pazienza' in Italian. Lol.

Two hires with local ties seems heavy handed, unless CMA had worked with one of them in the past, or were at least friends. That said, I think it's smart to aim to bring in Borman OR Hsu. LJ visiting WKU is odd timing, and an odd landing spot, especially with bigger programs knocking on his door. But it's his decision in the end. October is a long way off, and having CMA and now TJ Cleveland in place as well is a great start. I have confidence in CMA.

I don't feel bad at all for LJ, his handlers and Hsu probably have a deal and LJ is going along with it.
LJ is 21 not a teen anymore, he's now a grown man, if he don't like it then he needs to get rid of his handlers.
And if there's no deal, and HSU is just using him, then I dedicate this to LJ:

Disgraziato!!! LOL

IF Mark Hsu is moving to the 'unlikely box' as it seems from recent tweets, I am more than curious on the other likely guys to be picked for the Staff and what the timing is.
I'm guessing Andy Borman...in July, but who else in the meantime?
Is Mel Watkins slated to join the Staff as an AHC or an SA or will he retire?
If not Mel, who's the 3rd AC?
And who will be the DOBO? Kareim Reid, Chris Huey?
Interesting days in JohnnyLand.

Yeah, sorry Monte! Lol.

I don’t get it at all.
Why would LJ want to sit out a year?
What are the benefits?
No matter what I like what I’ve seen from our new HC and like our direction
W LJ or not.
Still don’t understand why he would leave when he’ll be our star, our starter, and not squander/dissipate a year hmmm

At this time last year Chris Mullin and Mitch Richmond were already back in California. Only Matt and Greg were dealing with current players and recruits.
Now we have a coach who recruits and his assistant who does what Matt did. Both will be here in NYC and not elsewhere so why are you concerned coach Anderson doesn't have 4 staff members yet after 6 days on the job?
Jobs need to be negotiated and availability is important. Give this new coach a chance to do his job and I'm sure AD Cragg is providing support.
We finally have a coach with experience and a trusted assistant who will break his ass to help him be as successful as possible.
If we are impatient Paultzman will start another Mike Rice thread.:p

I wonder if Melvin Watkins is retiring and if Scotty Thurman may join Iron Mike at St. John's?
Seems Scotty was offered an admin role at Arkansas as director of student-athlete development but declined it.
Couldn't find much more out about Mel Watkins though.
Maybe retiring?

The tweet above indicates Watkins is not joining Anderson here, whatever the reason.
