Asst coach discussion

Watkins made $391,635. Does he come north for possibly less? Does he have any desire to come north, regardless of salary? Does he ease into retirement?

If he gets a matching salary in NYC, he's automatically making less in terms of real worth of money.

But it's still $391,635 more than what he's scheduled to make next season.

TJ already in NY. Was at Nets game. His friends on Twitter joking that ‘he’s already moved to NY.’ TJ also ‘liking’ SJU tweets most notably Greg Williams Sr tweet about convo with coach.

Most on the Western Kentucky message board guessing Mark Hsu is leaving for St. John's.

But, hey.....what would a bunch guys on a college basketball message board know?

TJ seems to have good creds as a national recruiter and an up and coming coach.
He was credited with dramatically improving Arkansas’s back court’s turnover margin as an AC.
Sounds like a great AC.

Lol. Thanks JF.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that maybe Melvin Watkins doesn’t make it here as he’s a bit older than Mike Anderson and definitely entrenched down south. I think that AHC role may actually be better suited for TJ Cleveland who’s very experienced already, younger and might be a protege’ of Anderson. Cleveland has been a high level assistant and had already been an assistant for 16 years. This is not a DOBO-level guy. He also knows Mike Anderson’s system inside and out. Might be time for Cleveland to take those reigns. He’s not a noob at all and I can see him taking the AHC job.

If that’s the case, I can see Hsu possibly taking the next assistant spot after Cleveland. Powerful recruiter and Queens guy would make a great fit. Also experienced and not really a dobo candidate.

That leaves a Borman, who’s rumored to come aboard. I’d guess that he’d be the favorite for Dobo. He doesn’t have near the experience of Cleveland nor Hsu for an assistant spot. This would get him into the college track and cutting his teeth in the college game. He can still have a ton of influence from the DOBO spot and impact recruiting.

That leaves some names like Jay David out right now, but I think he might be edged by a guy like Borman who has all the Duke connections etc.

I can certainly see SJU springing for Melvin Watkins as a special advisor unless he’s considering retiring. Would be good for us and we’ve had guys like Keady in that role before. Seems wasteful to me from a money perspective, but it’s not my money and if SJU willing to do it, fine.

This is all just a somewhat educated guess. Curious to see how it turns out. Either way, I know the staff will be a ton better than under Mullin, which was one of his big shortfalls imo. Staff is imperative for recruiting efforts etc.

We lost our only recruiter in Matt A, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s recruiting all of our current players including Figs, Wright and others there. The exact nightmare scenario that we all anticipated and it was the undoing of Mullin who refused to hire another recruiter to the staff.

Hi MCNPA. If Watkins isn’t coming to NY or might be the SA, doesn’t that leave a 3rd AC spot open for Borman...or David?
I agree on TJC, he seems a true up and coming coach with 14 Years AC experience. He’s also been tabbed as a future HC prospect and was selected, with 30 other ACs, for the 2019 Collegiate Coaching Consortium, held during Final Four Weekend.

Don't know anything about the proposed AC Jay David but wouldn't have minded Larry David being on our last staff as at least we would have gotten a lot of laughs.

actually, you’re right. I guess I forgot that 3rd AC spot somehow. Then it all adds up without a problem. Either way, I’m guessing that’s close to how that staff works out. I do think Cleveland takes the AHC spot. He’s a great recruiter with a lot of experience and is best to help carry out Anderson’s style of coaching. He’s the protege’. If it all works out that way, or close, I’ll be thrilled frankly.

Yes, what a Staff we’ll have if TJC, Mark Hsu, and Andy Norman are the ACs.
Galaxies apart from the prior 4 years. Unbelievable!

3 great recruiters. But what liked about CMA s staff is he had Cleveland working w the guards and Watkins w the bigs. Give me 3 out of Borman,Watkins,Hsu and Cleveland and that would be a great staff. If somehow we can work out all 4 it would be a home run. Plenty of experience and complimentary pieces.

Two recent Twitter follows by TJ Cleveland seem to be Mark Hsu and Andy Borman. Could mean something. A couple of other assistant coaches like Terrence Rencher, and Joe Arbitello also.

Two grad transfer guards also got a recent follow in Donte Fitzpatrick-Dorsey and Edric Dennis Jr..

Save the Hero keeping his eye on twitter so we don't have to. Thanks for looking out!

If everybody stays and we grab a few talented grad transfers, we can be rolling. Great so see Hsu, Cleveland and Borman in the mix. Staff gonna be killer.

I was hoping we could stop this who the coach follows thing, but I guess it’s part of the new world.

No thank you on either of this players

We need a lead guard badly, but if the plan turns out to be cobbling together a backcourt with a couple new combo guards while waiting for Curbelo, I'm OK with that.
