Assistant

Before his ASU stint he was 254-158 (.616) with Miami (OH) and NC State, with 9 seasons of at least 19 wins and 6 NCAA appearances in 12 years. There was only one year where his team won less than 17 games (NC State went 13-16 one year). That ain't bad.

His first year at ASU they went 8-22, but the next 3 years they went 21-13, 25-10, and 22-11.

The wheels have definitely fallen off the cart there the last two years (12-19 and 10-21).

I don't love the style his teams play, but he is an extremely competent coach. I also seem to remember reading somewhere that he has one of the most impressive "coaching trees" in college basketball in terms of the number of his former assistants who are now head coaches elsewhere. Here's one link: http://www.basketballtimesonline.com/2009/12/bto-exclusive-many-branches-of-herb.html

I wouldn't knock Herb Sendek too much.

The same Sendek that was coaching NC State when we held them to 10pts in one half?

The same jerk who didn't want the runner up trophy?

Pass.

No, think he means the Sendek who was coaching at NC State and won 21 games a year and took them to the NCAAs his last 5 straight seasons.

Hey, If Herbie gets canned at ASU and is looking for a job , I'd gladly take him as Dunlaps replacement! :)

I don't like him. He has many more resources at ASU and he's spiraling out of control. You probably are unaware but he pretty much has had a team mutiny on his hands the last two years with players picking up and leaving.

As for his 'tree'-

Thad Matta spent 1 yr under him.
Jim Christian spent 1 yr under him.

The Hunters are nothing to write home about but I will give you Miller as a legit 'pupil' of his.

I know you love him and Seth. Don't worry soon enough they will be unemployed together :)

Just read today that Sendek lost two assistant coaches, has only one remaining. Hell of a time to lose two, especially when one was in charge of recruiting.

It appears Lav still hopes to hire an assistant ........ From the left coast.

So Darrick Martin is the guy.

We'll be snagging recruits from coast-to-coast.

Where are you hearing Darrick Martin's name?

Lenn Robbins tweeting this morning that Lav had dinner with Martin last week and is close to signing him as assistant.

Has he ever 'coached'?

Wiki page mentions him spending time with the Raptors as an informal assistant/consultant after being waived. Also worked in player development with the T-wolves. No updates to show a formal coaching role.

I guess we can read into those other positions that we're looking at a smart guy who is recognized as a student of the game and potential teacher of it.

Yeah nothing that I've read says that he was ever a "coach" but his familiarity with Lavin's system (and quirks), pro experience, west coast & NJ ties, PG development and I'm sure other intangibles should be invaluable.

Lavin going with a player development/recruiter over an Xs and Os guy says to me he wants to prove to everyone how good of a coach he really is. I'm sure he's heard all the praise Dunlap got be being a tactician. And coming off his health issues, I think he wants to show that he's still one of the best in the business.

I don't know enough about him. He's young, has good background in the game and NBA player development. Certainly could be valuable recruiting as well. Interesting choice. Look forward to getting our assistant on board and starting the season.

Not many 5'11 PGS make it to the NBA, let alone stick around for 13 years. Those that do, usually get there by being lightening quick. Darrick wasn't. Even more unusual, it took Darrick 3 years in the hinterlands after graduation to GET to the NBA - he was a CBA MVP. Played in the old IBL. Like several former Bruins, he was even a Globetrotter. He got to the NBA and stayed there on smarts and toughness.

That isn't to say he wasn't quick. He was a McDonalds AA out of high school. Started from day 1 at UCLA - as a frosh, he played shooting guard, as that was Pooh Richardson's senior year. Then moved to PG as a soph. HE went undrafted out of college, as he'd lost his starting role late in his senior year. Folks thought he'd lost a step and was out of shape, and was beaten out by a frosh. That was only a perception. Folks just didn't "get" how fast and quick that unknown frosh that beat him out was - Tyus Edney. By comparison, Darrick LOOKED slow that year - but he really wasn't.

Darrick's NBA career lasted probably 5 years longer than it should have because of three things. He was an incredibly POSITIVE lockerroom presence, he was an exceptional MENTOR to younger PGS on varioius rosters, and was literally considered an "extra" assistant coach on the court, on the bench and in practice....

Early in his career he did have some ego issues, but he overcame that problem pretty quickly in the pros.

Don't know if there's really any interest there, but he'd be a heckuv an asset on any staff. He played for the TWolves, Clippers, Mavs, Kings, Raptors and Grizz - so he's got "cred" in almost all regions of the country for recruiting.

And yes, Steve and Darrick WERE at UCLA together. Darrick was a junior when Steve was hired off of Keady's staff by Jim Harrick for the '91 season.

I recently watched some interviews of him. Smart, charismatic guy. Lavin will be able to boast tons of NBA connects with himself, Dunlap, Rico, Martin etc. Lavin almost building SJU "agency" for future NBA'ers. Not a bad strategy at all. Will sell prepping kids on playing in the NBA and boast a staff full of experience and connections. Not bad.

Also, should note he would be HUGE in the development of Branch, Green and Harrison.

Hard replacing Dunlap, but Allocco would have come very close. To amplify MCN, Martin would be a homerun from a recruiting perspective. Lethal combination of personalities on our bench that kids gravitate to.
