Assistant

I'm definitely in the minority here if this comes to fruition. Nobody can question his knowledge of the game. However age is a major factor. As an adviser he didn't have to be around ALL the time. This will be lots of practices, late nights, recruiting if he even makes that part of his responsibilities and if not then thats a big concern being a man down on the road. We have reaped the benefits of his great basketball mind the last 2 yrs. I see no reason to continue in the same roles and try to find a coach.

So for all those who think I worship all things Lavin here is another example of me having criticisms of him ;)

Blaney seems to have worked out pretty well at yukon. If this indeed going to come I'm sure both Lavin and Keady have evaluated the situation in all its aspects and Gene wouldn't be taking it on if both of them thought it wasn't going to work out.

Quite a plum to offer recruits, a HOF coach and another assistant (Rico), who has experience in getting pros ready.

Blaney is 73 AND has been there for the last 11 years in that role. Not the same to me.

Again I'm in minority here I know it. Just not a fan of the move. There are positives and negatives to every move

How is it not the same? Keady's about the same age isin't he? And there is no way you can compare Blaney to Keady as far as their records as head coaches.

I'm not comparing their HC records. I'm saying Blaney has been at Jimmy C's side since he was 62 yrs old. If Keady walked into an assistant role sooner as opposed to having such a gap at his age I wouldnt be concerned.

Again I know I am in the minority here. And I'm not trying to rip on age. I think its legitimate concerns however.

I certainly respect your opinion but this post confuses me; it's not like the position is going to be a mystery to Keady.

No its not a mystery. At this point I don't know what else I can say. I'm concerned being a full time assistant at his age, separated so many years since his last would be a detriment. And if he was hired in that capacity and doesnt recruit that would again be a detriment.

That being said I don't think he will be the choice.

You know, the "no recruiting" thing is PURE speculation by the board members. I honestly don't know. He's a freaking LEGEND in recruiting circles in the Midwest. Heck, for all we know the day he's formerly hired he may be camped out at Simeon High in Chicago. Hey, how many people know Purdue head coach Gene Keady was a regular contributor (guest appearances, camps, etc) for the Sonny Parker Youth Foundation (since the early 90's) - including having 5 former SPYF kids play for him at Purdue? For the uninformed, former NBA player Sonny Parker is the father of Jabari Parker ;) Again, just more pure speculaton.

The quotes when he came aboard were the role was perfect because he didnt have to recruit. Did he have an epiphany over the last 2 yrs? Maybe. But I think at 76 he doesnt want to be schmoozing in living rooms.

Think they saw the writting on the wall and thought this was as good a time as any to bail when they knew they had somewhere to land with a paycheck?

Pera's name was always briefly mentioned with our opening.

Before his ASU stint he was 254-158 (.616) with Miami (OH) and NC State, with 9 seasons of at least 19 wins and 6 NCAA appearances in 12 years. There was only one year where his team won less than 17 games (NC State went 13-16 one year). That ain't bad.

His first year at ASU they went 8-22, but the next 3 years they went 21-13, 25-10, and 22-11.

The wheels have definitely fallen off the cart there the last two years (12-19 and 10-21).

I don't love the style his teams play, but he is an extremely competent coach. I also seem to remember reading somewhere that he has one of the most impressive "coaching trees" in college basketball in terms of the number of his former assistants who are now head coaches elsewhere. Here's one link: http://www.basketballtimesonline.com/2009/12/bto-exclusive-many-branches-of-herb.html

I wouldn't knock Herb Sendek too much.

You don't deny that you pushed him and Seth Greenberg for the coaching job here at SJU and when Seth turned the job down I believe the phrase you used was "We are screwed."

After failing to make the NCAA's for a number of years and then seeing assistants flee Seth was fired at Va Tech. Sendek has had back to back horrific years compounded by the fact that the Pac 10/12 has flat out SUCKED the last few years (arguably the worst stretch by a BCS conference) and he is hanging by a thread. Quite frankly he was probably saved by the fact that ASU pushed their footballl coach out and not sure they wanted to go thru a major search in the same year for a baksetball coach as well. So he bought another year.

I think you would agree that SJU with Lavin is in a much better place then either Va Tech or ASU are, no?

I don't like him. He has many more resources at ASU and he's spiraling out of control. You probably are unaware but he pretty much has had a team mutiny on his hands the last two years with players picking up and leaving.

As for his 'tree'-

Thad Matta spent 1 yr under him.
Jim Christian spent 1 yr under him.

The Hunters are nothing to write home about but I will give you Miller as a legit 'pupil' of his.

I know you love him and Seth. Don't worry soon enough they will be unemployed together :)

I am not a huge Sendek fan. I do not like the style his teams play, and I did not want him for SJU. I'm just saying that he's a very competent coach, and if ASU lets him go I am pretty sure he will have a job someplace else in short order and will win wherever that is. That's what he does.

I do like Seth, who I think has done a great job in some tough places to coach. I would like to see what he could do if he had a program with a location and a history that recruits would actually want to go play for.

Other than maybe Tom Izzo, nobody's perfect.

Good point on Izzo. How many coaches are spotless like him

Just to mess with everyone - there is one weakness (at least) in Izzo. Was doing a breakdown on another board relative to getting a top 5 recruit - how often are the "experts" wrong. Since the RSCI consensus rankings started backin the late '90s, There have been incredibly few "disappointments" by the consensus top 5 (and understand, as a top 5, you can be a fine player and a future pro, and still be a collegiate disappointment). Virtually ALL of the "disappointents were Tom Izzo recruits to MSU (the only non-Izzo being UCLA's Jrue Holiday - but he was the starting PG for the 76'rs in what should have been his sophmore college year, so not a MAJOR disappointment, but you did expect more from him as a frosh). Shannon Brown (7.9, 10.2 pts his first two years at MSU). Kelvin Torbert.(9.5, 10.7, 8.7, 8.2 pts his 4 years). Marcus Taylor (7.4 pts 2.3 assists as a frosh, never reached the NBA). Even Zach Randolph (10.8 scorer as a collegian, and only 2.8 and 8.4 his first two NBA years).

This is a fact apparently not lost on Recruits. Since Shanon Brown (the last of the four listed above) in 2003, Izzo has been unable to land "top" recruits - only one top 15 player in the last 10 years - #10 ranked Delvin Roe, who isn't helping Izzo's reputation with top recruits as he has produced 6,1, 6.4, & 5.6 pts in his 3 years for Izzo so far (absolutely abysmal for a 10 ten recruit). MSU's recruiting is has been hurt badly - in two of those 10 seasons since Shannon Brown, MSU's been blanked COMPLETELY in RSCI top 100 talent.

Of course, given the team results on the court, this is a bit like complaining about Marilyn Monroe's mole. :)
