Assistant

I have no problem with Keady as AHC for this season. He probably won't be a long term choice for the spot with his age etc, but nobody can say the guy isn't qualified. The guy has a court in Indiana named after him. I'm assuming maybe things fell through with Allocco for some reason or another and with the season coming around the corner, Keady would be the obvious choice should he want to take the job. Now that Keady has moved to NY and gotten married he seems to have restarted his life and feels good where he is at. Even if this wasn't the move Lavin might have been aiming for, I can't really see how anybody would be upset with it. Keady is fantastic and I love how SJU has adopted him and he has embraced NYC and SJU.

I'm definitely in the minority here if this comes to fruition. Nobody can question his knowledge of the game. However age is a major factor. As an adviser he didn't have to be around ALL the time. This will be lots of practices, late nights, recruiting if he even makes that part of his responsibilities and if not then thats a big concern being a man down on the road. We have reaped the benefits of his great basketball mind the last 2 yrs. I see no reason to continue in the same roles and try to find a coach.

So for all those who think I worship all things Lavin here is another example of me having criticisms of him ;)

You cannot put a price on loyalty and Lav rewards it like many other coaches. Jim Boeheim and Jim Calhoun are no spring chickens anymore and they are head coaches. Calhoun's assistant is over 70 and that has not slowed down the Husky machine.
Tony Chiles and Rico Hines are very smart assistants and they have a lot of experience under their belts. The face of recruiting at St. John's is Steve Lavin with Tony doing all the preliminary scouting. I would look for Rico to have a more visible recruiting role.
If this move gives coach Keady another 100K and the assistants another 50K it still is less than what we paid coach D and if Steve is, as I expect, 100%, this move has a positive impact on the program.

If it comes to pass....even tho I don't see Coach Keady out on the recruiting trail for us, I wonder if we won't see a slight change to a more active mid-west recruiting strategy with Gene on the "official letterhead"....

Another thought is that Rico or Tony might get accellerated exposure to Coach Keady - with the idea of a 1 or 2 year "internal aprenticeship", and then one of them taking ove the Sr. assistant duties, rather than looking outside of Queens, then bringing in some new blood for a jr. assistant....

Just really free associating here - there's been a lot of rumors of someday former Lavin players coming back to join the program (we've heard Earl Watson's name, Moose Bailey mentioned last year, etc) - but some Keady players are also out there - if Brian Cardinals 12 year NBA run is over, there's been a lot of speculation about him as a future coaching prospect. I know at the Purdue alumni game he was quoted as hoping "when that time comes" that Matt Painter may have a spot for him at Purdue. But he wasn't a Painter player - he was one of Keady's last All Americans....again - just free associating/thinking out loud.

Both of you make some good points on this situation. I'm on the fence with it, and it has to do with Keady's age and what goes along with the job. I was hoping for someone younger who also had quite a few years of experience. Maybe, he felt he was up to it, hence why Lavin probably reached out to him. I certainly believe Keady could be a huge asset as the assistant head coach, but this could also be a stop-gap move, as I believe Keady will only coach for handful of seasons.

Keady is more than a solid asset, but I believe we'll be crossing this bridge again very shortly.

Blaney seems to have worked out pretty well at yukon. If this indeed going to come I'm sure both Lavin and Keady have evaluated the situation in all its aspects and Gene wouldn't be taking it on if both of them thought it wasn't going to work out.

Quite a plum to offer recruits, a HOF coach and another assistant (Rico), who has experience in getting pros ready.

Retweeted by Zach B. of the NY Post that Allocco has turned down the SJU offer and will be returning to De La Salle.

False and True.

Are you saying Lavin pulled the offer?

If he did, hopefully it was done tactfully -- Northern California isn't super-fertile recruiting wise, but there are some high-level D-1 guys who come out of here.

Blaney is 73 AND has been there for the last 11 years in that role. Not the same to me.

Again I'm in minority here I know it. Just not a fan of the move. There are positives and negatives to every move

The other thing is the physical demands of the position. Don't know if coach would enjoy the 2nd. half of the season as much as the first. How old is coach ?

76

Also I would think he got married to enjoy this part of his life with someone special. Being an associate coach will chip into that even more.

Moose, I'd have never expected you to be an "age-ist"!

Sorry but I am with Otis and moose on this one.
We had all the benefits of coach Keady already on staff don't know why he had to be elevated.
To me it seems we are now down a great mind from the last two seasons.

I know it was before your time Moose but Al LoBalbo was an assistant to Louie until he was 77.
Calhoun at 70 and Blaney at 72 is not exactly a youth movement for 2013 and 2014 recruits! LOL!
I think the offer to Frank Allocco was foolish as he and his family would never move east IMO, especially at age 60.
There are others in the mix but hot assistants do not move to other D1 schools to be assistants.
Coach Keady for a year or two is better than some wash out from another school. Don't forget we still have a good BB mind behind the scenes in Moe Hicks also.
I think things will shake out very soon.

I was with you until you essentially inferred Coach Allocco was a 'wash out'. Too each his/her own. I wouldn't call an offer foolish to a good Coach no matter where he lived.

My guess, and that's all this is, is thst the Keady move, if it happens, is a 1-year solution. It's just so late in the game now, that there is no one out there who meets Lavin's criteria. I think they will begin to search again in earnest once this season ends.

I dont mind the move. I think like others said that maybe it would be a stopgap move.

If the worst thing that happens in life is we end up with the 2nd winningest coach in big ten history as our assistant head coach then I could find a few other things in life to worry about instead
