Assistant

I dont mind the move. I think like others said that maybe it would be a stopgap move.

If the worst thing that happens in life is we end up with the 2nd winningest coach in big ten history as our assistant head coach then I could find a few other things in life to worry about instead

Why do we have to make a stop gap move though?
Did we put all our eggs in one basket and now left holding the bag?
Tony Chilleaous is about to leave UW for Nova. I don't think its too late in the game at all

The promotion of former Purdue coach Gene Keady from special advisor to St. John’s assistant coach isn’t the foregone conclusion many have reported it to be, sources told The Post.
While Keady remains an internal option, Red Storm coach Steve Lavin’s search is still ongoing to replace former assistant and X’s and O’s guru Mike Dunlap, who was hired as the head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats in June.
Lavin missed much of last year after recovering from prostate cancer surgery and Dunlap ran the undermanned and freshmen-heavy team, which finished 13-19.
One name that intrigues Lavin, a source said, is brother-in-law John Moore, the longtime head coach at NAIA Westmont College who has compiled a 374-206 record in 19 seasons at the California school. He has coached junior national teams overseas, is Westmont's associate athletic director and also runs camps and high school tournaments. Westmont, in fact, faced St. John’s in Lavin’s first game with the Red Storm in 2011.
Lavin has previously met with former NBA veteran and UCLA alum Earl Watson, ESPN recruiting analyst Paul Biancardi, De La Salle (Calif.) High School coach Frank Allocco and current New Orleans Hornets vice president of player personnel Gerald Madkins.

I dont know maybe Lavin is now looking for a certain level of comfort with the person especially after his health thing last year.

When my partner at work retires I'm going to replace him and hire another junior partner and be extremely selective and if I have to wait a year or 2 or 3 to find the right person I'll wait.

Obviously it's 2 completely different lines of work that we do but in both cases it's our reputations on the line and I know at least in my case trust means more to me than anything else in the world and I dont trust a lot of people even though I might get a long with them

Heck I was hoping for that guy from the pacers anyway but I'm cool with Yoda

I'm definitely in the minority here if this comes to fruition. Nobody can question his knowledge of the game. However age is a major factor. As an adviser he didn't have to be around ALL the time. This will be lots of practices, late nights, recruiting if he even makes that part of his responsibilities and if not then thats a big concern being a man down on the road. We have reaped the benefits of his great basketball mind the last 2 yrs. I see no reason to continue in the same roles and try to find a coach.

So for all those who think I worship all things Lavin here is another example of me having criticisms of him ;)

Blaney seems to have worked out pretty well at yukon. If this indeed going to come I'm sure both Lavin and Keady have evaluated the situation in all its aspects and Gene wouldn't be taking it on if both of them thought it wasn't going to work out.

Quite a plum to offer recruits, a HOF coach and another assistant (Rico), who has experience in getting pros ready.

Blaney is 73 AND has been there for the last 11 years in that role. Not the same to me.

Again I'm in minority here I know it. Just not a fan of the move. There are positives and negatives to every move

I know it was before your time Moose but Al LoBalbo was an assistant to Louie until he was 77.
Calhoun at 70 and Blaney at 72 is not exactly a youth movement for 2013 and 2014 recruits! LOL!
I think the offer to Frank Allocco was foolish as he and his family would never move east IMO, especially at age 60.
There are others in the mix but hot assistants do not move to other D1 schools to be assistants.
Coach Keady for a year or two is better than some wash out from another school. Don't forget we still have a good BB mind behind the scenes in Moe Hicks also.
I think things will shake out very soon.
I was with you until you essentially inferred Coach Allocco was a 'wash out'. Too each his/her own. I wouldn't call an offer foolish to a good Coach no matter where he lived.

I never implied coach Allocca was a wash out!!!! I said coach Keady was better than some wash out from another D1 college. Coach Allocca is a high school coach.
Although he has ties to NJ, moving a high school coach with a family in the Bay area is not an easy proposition. I could be wrong but as I said, it was just an opinion.

The Moore's live an idyllic life in Montecito. Why would he leave with two teen daughters?
I would never work with my brothers-in-Laws......never! LOL!

How is it not the same? Keady's about the same age isin't he? And there is no way you can compare Blaney to Keady as far as their records as head coaches.

I'm not comparing their HC records. I'm saying Blaney has been at Jimmy C's side since he was 62 yrs old. If Keady walked into an assistant role sooner as opposed to having such a gap at his age I wouldnt be concerned.

Again I know I am in the minority here. And I'm not trying to rip on age. I think its legitimate concerns however.

Lane Odom's name is popping up again. I thought it would be a pretty good move but after some googling he was being looked at by NCAA when he was at Mizzou.

I hear ya, but Keady and Lavin have a great relationship regardless of their difference in age. Keady said he came out of retirement because of his high regard for Lavin. So i really don't get the age difference or lack of time together as any potential drawback.

I guess I'm doing a bad job of explaining it. Blaney has been an assistant coach with all the responsibilities for the last 11 years. Starting from when he was 62. Keady the last two years has helped us out but wasn't a full time assistant. And prior to that for however many years did nothing at all. I'm not talking about their lack of time together either. Just saying starting up a new career with added responsibilities at Keady's age as opposed to 62 when Blaney did is NOT apples to apple IMO.

Perhaps those who believe that age is not a factor in hiring an Assistant Head Coach for a Big East basketball team and are advocating Coach  Keady believe that Hall of Fame great Lou Carnesecca should also be considered.

Eleven years ago, when Coach Carneseca was the same age Coach Keady is now, and if he was interested? You BET I'd have wanted him back on the sideline working with our young players AND our young coaches.

Coach C will be 88 this year! God bless him!

Moose, like coaches Boeheim and Calhoun, coach Keady coached until he was 70. He last coached Purdue only 6 years ago (2006) and was then hired by the NBA Toronto Raptors as an assistant coach until 2007 when he resigned due to his wife's illness. For about 3 years after his wife's death he was a TV analyst for the Big 10 Network until Lavin called with an offer he could not refuse. So, the many years he did nothing was more than Lavin did after he left UCLA.
He has BB in his blood and is very verbal as many know. This would be a temporary position until coach Keady really decides to put the ball away for good. Keady at 77 is better than Blaney at 73.....period.
But it is not a done deal so let's see in the coming days what decisions are made.
We have a very young staff with Chiles, Hines and Lav so I do not know what the big fuss is over Keady.

+1 eleven years ago is the key phrase!

I certainly respect your opinion but this post confuses me; it's not like the position is going to be a mystery to Keady.

And perhaps that is about as lame an argument as one could come up with. Keady has been working with the team the last two years, has recently gotten married, and still appears to have the energy and passion required. Were he taking catnaps on the bench I could understand but please provide some solid evidence his age will be a factor.
