Assistant Coaches

Its not unreasonable to question the coaching situation. I have faith in Mullin , but it seems to me being short staffed puts us at a slight disadvantage recruiting wise. Do we have anyone recruiting for us other than our present staff, IE Terrance?

The most surprising news about the assistant coach would be Knight not asking about it for the 20th time and peanut not complaining about it for the 100th time.

It's been about 2 weeks since I inquired. I figured that while we wait for Maverick's decision I would rehash this rather the continue the CO saga and whether he will return. :silly:

I'm guessing Mitch has various business interests that he needs to tend to before leaving the state and taking on a job where he'll have little free time.

The coaching staff consists of a head coach and two assistants as we all are aware of. All three have been on the road recruiting and in according to NCAA rules you can only have three coaches on the road recruiting at anyone time, so not having the third assistant is not hurting us in this area.

In terms of personal workouts with current players, I recall it mentioned in either this thread or elsewhere that the players were working out with someone besides staff, so that is not being neglected.

Yes it would be nice to fill the entire staff but Dunlap, Martin and Whitesall were all hired rather late in the past as was Tiny over at the Hall. The last hire and the entire staff will be completed in due time.

All of the points you made are very valid. But at the same time, wouldn't it also be helpful in recruiting if you can tell a kid who the final assistant is, especially if that final assistant is someone like a Mitch Richmond?

Whatever the responsibilities are of the additional assistants is determined by Mullin. I'd much rather have guys with college experience filling those roles. With one HOF'er running the show, I don't think having any other former NBA players on his staff would strongly influence recruits. I'd rather have a competent staff with college experience around Mullin. Coaches often hire a 5th assistant with no proven experience but I don't think in our situation that would be advisable.

That's assuming whomever the final assistant is has name recognition. I don't think recruits care as they know the three that have been recruiting them since they got here. What kid knew who Dunlap was yet he was well known in coaching circles.

I agree Beast. I've said in the past, have to have complimentary pieces. Would like to see a big man coach or XO guy.

Mitch Richmond seems to be around quite a few SJU functions of late.

Wonder if he's coming on board.

Would guess if eligible. :)

Could the hold up be that Mitch hasn't earned his degree?

No that's not it, Massiello didn't need it and Eddie Jordan didn't need it either.
Massiello didn't need it because he said he had it. Eddie Jordan I believe had to finish up his requirements for a degree. Not an NCAA rule but most schools seem to require it.

Pretty sure we made Dermon Player get his degree, so St. John's likely requires it. But richmond has a degree, so that's not a hold up with him.

Since there is nothing to rehash on Maverick & Obeckpa, anyone hear any news on the completion of the staff?

Think they have someone in mind, just not sure if he should be named an AC or DOBO or AD.

An athletic director and an assistant basketball coach are two very different jobs. I find it hard to believe that they would be deciding on which position to offer this person.

Really? Thanks for the info! And thanks for detecting my light sarcasm!

Please refer to my previous post about his complete inability to recognize sarcasm ever, and how painful it is to witness. Thank you.

Hey! What's going on with Maverick & Obeckpa? :silly:
