Around the Big East

I am only looking at St. John's at this point. If they play there best, they will be in every game this year including Duke. The question still is how many will they win.

What's with the "they"?

I think its just my Queens accent. No harm intended.

I always use they, or the team name, for a couple of reasons. Firstly unlike a number of you I'm not an alum. But also, I'm not on the team. They're the ones doing the hard yards, not me. Not in my nature to usurp their efforts.

The B.E. has a show case these next two night.

Villanova vs. Indiana 7pm espn
SHU @ Wichita St. 7pm espn2

Wednesday
Kansas @ Georgetown 7pm FS1

Ideal would be 2-1 but what would a sweep say about the B.E.
Villanova I think wins their game
Kansas @ G-Town, anything can happen on the road.
SHU @ Wichita St. real tough.

Gotta avoid that sweep at all cost. That happens and the so called experts say, we don't belong in the same sentence with the p5

Nova is playing Illinois.

I think we will go 1-2 when all is said and done. Maybe Georgetown can pull it out with Kansas and their players legal trouble and it is also at home for gtown.

Don't see seton hall winning, they are a young team playing in their first hostile environment, I think they'll put up a good fight but ultimately lose similar to our game at duke DLos freshmen year.

Only saw the 2nd half so can't comment on the full game, but Providence did not play poorly in the 2nd half. Brown just executed incredibly and made shots, 10-23 from 3 in particular. I know that loss would cause an uproar if it was us, but sometimes you just get beat. Brown runs incredible stuff on offense, very hard to guard.

Still view the Providence games as critical for us this year. Big difference between sweeping them and 1-1 (same could probably be said of SHU). Would love to go 3-1 in those 4, just seems like these are 2 teams we'll want to have some separation from come March. Providence pretty tall/long and runs a tight flex (mostly inside 15 feet) with a lot of discipline. Will be important to commit to 40 mins of defense against them especially with a shorter rotation, they want to wear you down with constant screening and banging.

The Brown coach is very impressive with a bright future.

I checked out one of the Providence boards last night. They are as bad, if not worse than us, in terms of ripping the players. Most of the fans give Cooley a pass but they were suicidal last night.

I agree brown played very well, but providence was sleep walking to me.

That brown-providence game was something St. John's fans should look at and be alarmed, because last night is a game that nearly happened to us numerous times this year and might still happen this year.

Providence was sleep walking early and didn't take their opponents seriously, much like we do everytime we play lesser opponents. Brown was hitting 3s, and midway through the 2nd half providence decided to pick their game up, again, much like we do when we play lesser teams. But brown stayed hot, kept hitting 3s, didn't miss a single FT down the stretch and finished off the upset.

It shows how easily these games can go the other way, everytime we've been in the situation we have pulled away, but it just takes one of the games where the mid major stays hot, we lose, and our resume takes an awful hit. As the season progresses, I'm finding myself become more and more nervous when we play mid majors rather than the good teams.

Go check out a Kentucky board after they lose a game or a recruit to another school.

There is a reason we are Fans. The word is derived from Fanatic.

I didn't think PC played well in the 2nd half. They had no penetration by the guards, didn't use their bigs and often settled for long jumpers that were not in the flow of an offense. Lost offensive possessions really hurt when the other team is hitting its shots.

In our case, we've had several games lately where we've started to form an identity on offense and clear roles, plus more drives and kick outs, so hopefully that continues.

Some might argue that being a longtime St. John's fan is its own way of "doing the hard yards."

@MarquetteMBB: Deonte Burton & John Dawson departing #mubb program at conclusion of semester/finals week (Dec. 14) & will transfer.

Dawson's averaging 0's across the board, so no big loss, but they'll probably miss Burton's 6.4 ppg off the bench.

I can't stress enough how big the next month is for the team. Really believe the next 5 games need to be won considering we open BE play @SHU and then Butler and Nova home. All 3 games are toss ups in my opinion. Take care of our own business the next 5 OOC games and we are afforded some wiggle room once the BE sched. starts

Cooley and Lavin are very similar, but Cooley is revered by SJU fans and Lavin is hated.
Despite inheriting three All-Big East players and doing well on the recruiting trail, Cooley has seen one NCAA game (a loss just like Lavin) and that was with largely with Keno's players (Cotton, Batts, Kofane, Goldsbrough, Bancroft, etc.). He's had guys suspended, guys ineligible, plenty of transfers, and he's lost every recruit he's gone head to head with Lavin for. Providence was the #2 FT shooting team in the nation last year with some good outside shooters and excellent offensive rebounding. That makes any coach look better than they are. How many games would Lavin have won if his guys shot 78.1% from the line like Providence? Providence woudl have won 16-18 games if they shot what we shot from the FT line (forget the lack offensive rebounding).

I'm a huge fan of Henton, but I hate the way he's being used. His RPG are down from 8.6 as a frosh to 5.7. That was his biggest contribution. They are also starting a 6'7 frosh at the two. How can that kid stay with any of our guards? The transfer by Fortune kills them.

Good point on Fortune.
