how could that be? Gtown is just a middle of the pack Big East team. You've told us yourself, the league is down. Surely this can;t happen against a
Big Ten powerhouse.
Um on any given day a team can beat anyone. We went toe to toe with Cuse. That doesn't mean we are the top of the Big East. I'm the biggest pro BE person out there but there are 2 good teams in the conference. The rest is a total toss up. Gtown came in after losing what 6 in a row? I'm happy they won today. Any right-minded SJU fan should have been pulling for them today.
But we need 2 teams to really step up and not have the remaining 8 teams beat up on each other. You need 4 bids or 1st year is a big disappointment.
Right now the conference would have four teams in the tournament. A fifth team is still possible but a long shot. Not terrible for the first year.
Guess what.
The season doesn't end right now. The other 8 teams in the conference are beating each other up. Ala Seton Hall today.
Yeah, that is one advantage the AAC has over us. After the top five, it falls off faster than the Grand Canyon. They can just rack up ten easy wins and hope to take a few from the other big boys. St. John's would be going nuts in that conference. AAC has 5/10 teams ranked 147-208 in the RPI and St. John's is currently 9-0 against teams ranked 125 and worse. Hopefully the selection committee understands that. The Big East is much more unforgiving. Cincy is 9-0 (5-0 away from home) in the AAC, but they are 0-1 against the Big East, getting waxed by 17 points on a neutral court by Xavier. I think St. John's would win 14-15 games in the AAC. I find it hard to believe that Creighton and Nova wouldn't beat them as well, and we've at least split with them, even in the darkest years, because of their sloppy style of play.
I think the Big East has four teams in right now. Providence is inside the bubble and has to be careful, but Xavier is very safe for now--but has to win at least five to maintain that status. They have an excellent RPI that will help.
Gtown and SJU are the only two really left in the hunt for what could be the fifth bid. Both teams have strong RPIs relative to their record and nearly identical schedules remaining. The only differences are Gtown has five road games and SJU only has four, they play @ DePaul and home against Providence (reverse of us), and, of course, they play @ St. John's. Five bids is not out of the question if the quartet of Xavier, Providence, Gtown, and St. John's beat up on the bottom of the league and take a few from Xavier and Nova.
