Around the Big East

A horrible first half by Georgetown. They played the way we did at times last year. Arkansas State is probably at the same level as Incarnate Word.

Georgetown looks awful. They will not improve that much this season. Look very stiff with no guards.

So can we beat them??

Right now?. Absolutely... They look terrible. All around too.. They'll probably get it together a bit but they're a flawed team. Missing parts.

Per PC blog
At the half, PC trails OSU, 38-28. Bullock leads PC w/ 12 pts. Lyle leads OSU w/ 15 pts. #gofriars @PCFriarsmbb

Hoyas come back, but lose to ASU. Chants of "Fire Thompson" come from the student section.

Arkansas State, which entered the day ranked 274th in KenPom, wins at Georgetown, ranked 30th. 78-72 final.

Providence loses to OSU in close game, 72-65

Hey,Kansas barely beat Incarnate Word in their season opener, 78-73. The Cardinals (good name for a Catholic college) ain't so bad.

P.S. Good to see SMU beat Pitt. Love to see the ACC go down.

I wasn't trying to slight the Word.

I don't doubt you ... but you have to admit that, following last year's embarrassing beating by them, Incarnate Word has an element of negativity attached to it.

DePaul is horrible! Playing in an empty arena on national television is embarrassing.
I don't think there were 1500 fans there.....it was so quiet you could clearly hear the players on the court calling out.....sad

Seton Hall's win at Iowa clinched at least a tie for the Big East in the Gavitt Games (Michigan's romp of Marquette does not count - that's part of the 2K Classic). We can win it for the conference tomorrow night.

It would be nice to substitute UDayton which has made a commitment to having a strong men's basketball program, and its enthusiastic fans for hapless DePaul which merely has the Chicago airport as a selling point.

Freshman Powell of SH will challenge Ponds for FOY award this year. This kid can shoot & went for 26 points in win over Iowa.

Seton Hall seems to be sustaining a solid BE program despite some predictions here they will implode. They are recruiting well, identifying kids with very good potential & taking a swing at some elites. I don't think SH will miss Whitehead much with a nucleus of Desi, Carrington & Delgado complemented by some promising role players. We'll see.

Agree big time after being taken to task last year for suggesting Willard was building a sustainable program. They have the best chance to unseat Nova (although I don't think they will) because they match up relatively well across the perimeter and with Delgado seemingly have an advantage in the paint. I think Nova is the best team in the country but we shall see.

After two days there is no telling how that last 97 second meltdown against md. impacted them.

It really was sad. I was thinking like they had a freak blizzard or something to hold down the crowd. Really bad.

I loved this line from one of the tweets that is linked to the article:

"This has become like being a Jets fan. Every year, new hope, new attitude, new players; same grinding decades long futility."

And next year they won't even have the airport.

But seriously, it will be interesting to see if the new facility will help them next year with fan support. DePaul playing home games at the Horizon is akin to Columbia playing home games at Nassau Colisseum. Not only is it a long slog for students and city dwelling fans but it's in a suburban area that only serves a small portion of those living outside the city.

I'm not saying that they new facility will suddenly turn around their fan base but it's got to at least make the student attendance better and with 10K+ seats to fill I hope that they have a very aggressive student ticket policy to keep the place full. Like STJ they have a very small % of students living on campus (just under 3k). They didn't open their first dorm until 1970 and like STJ are probably still seen by most in their local community as more of a commuter school. That doesn't help attendance, but at least they'll be in the city for every game and won't have as many seats to fill as STJ does at MSG, especially during down years.
