The man most responsible for Seton Hall's success is Lavin. If he offers coaching job to Morton and Whitehead enrolls at SJU SJU probably wins a couple of more games last year which saves Lavin's job.
Lavin brings back OB this year along with Whitehead and probably Rodriguez along with a couple of other recruits and the season is not a total disaster and maybe Lavin survives.
On the other hand Willard is probably gone.

That is quite a reach

I don't think we make the NCAA with Whitehead last year.

Remember, there were problems between the freshman and the upperclassman at the Hall last year. Given our sometimes hot-headed group of players last year, we could very easily have had the same thing happen, and Lavin might have been out the door, anyway.

No question, we'd be much better this year, though.

Carrington came because Seton Hall recruited him.

You forgot to add "and we stopped". He was a strong lean until we stopped recruiting him and as they say the rest is history.

I agree my post is a reach but my point was I don't know if Lavin wanted Whitehead but if he didn't offer because he felt offering Morton a job was not the right thing to do he was wrong. College coaching is one of the sleaziest professions around and the greatest coaches of all time were almost all guilty of cheating from Wooden to Dean Smith.
A year later all Lavin's coaches were out of a job.

Besides, Seton Hall hasn't done anything in years, and a few folks are clamoring over 'em like they are Villanova or Xavier or something. Lots of teams have put together a good season or two, and then flamed out. Until Seton Hall shows sustainability, then it's nothing more than a good season in my book.

I had no problem with getting Whitehead because I did not feel a need to hire his coach. I would not want my program to set that standard, to get a player we will hire someone close. You don't sustain programs that way. The interesting thing with Seton Hall is once this class dissolves in a year or two where will they be.

Another point, I would not want any kid from Lincoln. They are all baggage. Marbury, Telfair, Whitehead, Lance.

Their prospective recruits are seeing winning exciting basketball with good coaching so if they continue to sign good players may very well be able to sustain some level of success.

That is what I meant. I was being sarcastic.

It is kind of odd to be taking shots at Whitehead when we had to deal with Jordan. Maybe it wasn't Whitehead's fault last year. In order to build a winning program you have to sometimes take a chance and that is what Willard did.I agree they have not accomplished anything yet but they only have to win one NCAA game to do something we haven't done in sixteen years.

True! But your point? No one has said anything about St. John's "accomplishments."

My point is that you don't take Seton Hall seriously as a threat to St. John's in recruiting local talent. I think they can be because they are far ahead of where we are in terms of talent and if they start winning NCAA games they will be in terms of accomplishments as well.

Willard deserves his extension. Why has he not yet received it? It seems like it would hurt his recruiting this year.

I never said anything about taking Seton Hall seriously, per local recruiting. Regardless, whether they are taken seriously recruiting local talent or not.... I don't care where the talent comes from, as long as talent is on the squad. There is more than one way to skin a cat.

"If they start winning NCAA games they will be in terms of accomplishments as well." "IF" is such a small word that means so much. They'll be taken seriously, once sustainability takes place, IMO. Otherwise, anything else is just supposition.

Georgetown's performance in the Big East this year has been a major surprise. Almost every preseason poll (including the Big East coaches poll) had them coming second. They can't blame injuries. Most of their Big East losses have been close--in some cases, very close. But no excuse. JT III has to be on the hotseat at this point.

The seat will never get hot so long as Dad is alive
