Around the Big East

Somehow my message was missed. Long island...Westchester....Manhattan. The greatest and most populated metropolis in the country. A rally in Storrs?  I accept the negativity as its expected....Things are on the rise for our team and University....I cant wait for the season to start....Go St. JOHNS!!

I'm no fan of UCONN, but over the last 20 or so years, their men's and women's teams have combined for 15 national championships in that dump known as Storrs. SJU men's and women's teams , in the greatest metropolis in the world, has combined for zero in total in the history of our program. That ain't negativity, that's reality. Something that seems to be lost on some of our fan base. Yeah things are looking up, but let's at least make an appearance in a big dance first before we start celebrating and putting down other way more successful programs

Monte i see your point...but I rather stay focused on our positives for the players and the University. I applaud the success of the UCONN program...but this is St Johns fan site so I thought the post was appropriate. Again we are the biggest and most populated metropolis in the Country with a better Coach....and greatest sports arena....A great place to play....forget Uconn and Storrs...

Appreciate your enthusiasm and optimism JR,. Agree with what you're saying about NYC metro area.  I'm just a bit more reserved in my optimism about the coach and the program. Im excited about the direction of the program so far, but we need to dance a bit before I start jumping with joy. I also like CMA a lot, but still feel that time will tell who's a better coach at their current job, CMA or Hurley.

Very fair (4th). Provided we stay reasonably healthy, I see us somewhere between 5th and 2nd and would be disappointed with 5th.

UCONN and their problems up there in Storrs makes me think...who cares about som pom pom rally in the middle of nowhere....The Garden...NY....Long island....we are the big ticket! There is a different attitude with this administration AD...Coach...players...University. Such an exciting time to be an SJU fan... Steph Smith and Julian are great representatives of this great school and program....so proud...Go St Johns!

While I agree there seems to be more excitement about this team and the future, the one geographic that needs to be heard from is the students.  Let's see how many students show up for Friday night's kick-off (and how many of them are not there just for the performer).  If it is a sell out and not just due to the performer, lets see that excitement carry over to the start of the season.  You will know when excitement really takes over when the students start showing up in droves instead of drips and drabs.

SJ Press releasehttps://www.bigeast.com/news/2021/10/19/mens-basketball-villanovas-gillespie-named-big-east-preseason-player-of-the-year.aspx]rence Release QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 19, 2021) – After solidifying a reputation as two of the league’s top players a season ago, Julian Champagnie and Posh Alexander have been predicted to continue that trend in 2021-22.  Champagnie has been named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team while Alexander has found on a spot on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Second Team, it was announced on Tuesday morning at BIG EAST Media Day. St. John’s, which received votes in Monday’s Associated Press Preseason Top 25 poll, has been predicted to finish fourth by a survey of the league’s coaches.  Villanova was picked to win the league for the seventh time in the last eight years, followed by Connecticut in second.  Xavier (76 points) finished narrowly ahead of the Johnnies (73), who edged out Seton Hall (68) in fifth.  The coaches chose Butler (60) to finish in the middle of the pack followed by Providence (45), Creighton (38) and Marquette (26).  Georgetown (25) and DePaul (10) rounded out the rest of the preseason poll. St. John’s fourth-place prediction matches the highest for the Johnnies since the team was slotted third prior to the 2014-15 season.  The Red Storm was also chosen fourth before the 2018-19 campaign.  Both of those seasons resulted in an NCAA Tournament appearance for the Johnnies. Champagnie enjoyed a breakout season as a sophomore in 2020-21, finishing atop the BIG EAST in scoring at 19.8 points per game and finding a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team and sharing BIG EAST Most Improved Player honors with Xavier’s Zach Freemantle.  In addition to leading the conference in scoring, the Brooklyn native also ranked first in the BIG EAST in free throw percentage (88.7%), fifth in 3-pointers made (2.4), seventh in rebounding (7.4), fourth in steals (1.4) and ninth in blocks (1.0). Champagnie became just the fourth player in program history to lead the BIG EAST in scoring over the course of a conference season, joining an esteemed fraternity that includes Chris Mullin (1983-84), Walter Berry (1985-86) and Marcus Hatten (2001-02).  Champagnie’s, who reached double figures in all 25 of his appearances last season and scored 20 or more points 11 times, logged seven double-doubles and was twice named the BIG EAST Player of the Week.  He finished 25th nationally in points per game and is the second leading scorer among returning high-major players behind Vanderbilt’s Scotty Pippen Jr. Alexander joined an elite group in the history of the BIG EAST Conference last season, becoming just the fourth player in league history to earn BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year honors as a freshman.  The other three individuals to do so are all members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame: Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning and Allen Iverson.  The Brooklyn native earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Year accolades after averaging 10.9 points, 4.3 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 2.6 steals per outing.  He scored in double figures 13 times with a pair of 20 points outings while leading the conference and ranking sixth nationally, first among freshmen, in steals per game.  Alexander’s 4.3 helpers per outing were good enough for tops among BIG EAST freshmen and sixth in the conference overall.

Media day available on YouTube.

Comments from CMA to John Fanta... "Remember the name Omar Stanley."  That's a pretty big endorsement.
Stanley is going to be the next Earlington on terms of hustle and junkyard dog mentality.
Although Earlington lost some of that as last year he became more of a 3 point shooter.  Thats not Stanleys game.  He is going to under the hoop getting big rebounds, playing great d and getting those garbage points on putbacks etc.

How about : Omar's Comin' Yo !

CMA's comments on Stanley reminds me a bit of his comments on another ex-SJU low post player.
"____ is really going to help our basketball team. He's played at this level. He's a very experienced guy, very physical. He just knows how to play the game".

I'll play. Who is Arnoldo Toro?

Let's hope rather than being the next Toro, Stanley is more akin to the next Dylan Wusu; an under the radar freshman recruit who exceeds expectations as a frosh.  Have to admit I was as high on Toro as coach was at this time last year.

NC I guess my point is that these pre-season comments mean very little. Writers are looking for sound bites about these kids, especially newcomers,  and coaches provide them. Nothing much to see here till season starts.
