Around the Big East

Another standings opinion

4. St. John’s Red StormSt. John’s is arguably the most interesting team to project heading into this coming season. On one hand, Julian Champagnie and Posh Alexander make up one of the league’s best duos. The former is a legit Player of the Year candidate in the league with superb scoring ability while the latter is the reigning Freshman and Defensive Player of the Year. The Red Storm definitely exhibit the star power necessary to finish near the top of the league. With that said, it is not as though they lit up the conference last season. St. John’s finished a respectable 10-10 in Big East games (tournament included) and missed the NCAA Tournament. Their final KenPom rank was actually worse than the season prior. SJU played at a frenetic pace and forced a ton of turnovers, but generally took a major step back defensively. They posted the worst 2-point allowed of head coach Mike Anderson’s career. The hope is that a new-look frontcourt can return SJU to at least respectable inside the arc. Joel Soriano (Fordham) and Aaron Wheeler (Purdue), most notably, need to answer the call. There is a decent chance that both start from the onset of the year. The Red Storm generally lack proven frontcourt depth, and that could hurt their chances for improvement. A lot of the chips are betting on Soriano/Wheeler being consistently impactful defenders. JUCO transfer Esahia Nyiwe may also help.

Dana O’Neil;

Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman told The Athletic that with the FOX deal expiring in 2025, she will ask her presidents to at least examine expansion.  "That's in the back of our minds,'' she said. "What school helps with our basketball aspirations?"

Seems inevitable.  Almost like she's setting the table a bit, similar to the comments about UCONN expansion a few years back.

There was an interesting article today in The Athletic about possible Big East expansion candidates. It gave a lot of the same ole suggestions like Gonzaga, Wichita St, Loyola-Chicago, VCU, Dayton, SLU etc.

But one interesting idea they had was adding Gonzaga, St. Mary's and UNLV. UNLV is a name I hadn't heard before but the article called them the UConn of the west, as their basketball has been good in the past, but their football is atrocious, and hasn't won a game in 2 years. They also laid out how a schedule could possibly work for Gonzaga, and SMC coming to the eastern schools (SJU, Nova, PC, SH and UConn) on weekends only etc.

Overall a very thought provoking article. I think adding another modern blue blood in Gonzaga, and expanding to the Las Vegas market would be a homerun for the conference, which could set them up for a big payday on the new TV deal. Plus I wouldn't mind going to a road game every year in Las Vegas.

For some reason on my Google Feed yesterday, a link to The Boneyard came up where their fans were discussing this article. To summarize, the majority over there feel it's a total waste to expand unless the Big East can add Gonzaga, Kansas, or Notre Dame. They feel teams like Dayton, VCU, and St Louis do nothing for the conference. They seem a bit jaded. The first thought that came to mind was I wonder how they would have felt about originally adding Butler, Creighton and Xavier to the Big East. Those have all become very good additions.

St .John must first be a top 20 bb team for more than 2 years before allowing teams like Gonzaga and Kansas and ND  into the Big East West Conference. It wouldn’t hurt either if St John would upgrade their academic standings.Otherwise  St.John will always be at an disadvantage in recruiting

I think that is a big blow to the Hoyas who were counting on his production.
They lost a few players after the season and will be very young and inexperienced.
A player with King's size, experience and past production would have been a huge asset this season.
No one can fault Ewing's effort but he doesn't seem to catch a break.

He can't catch a break because he has had at least four recruits thrown out of Georgetown for disciplinary reasons in the last few seasons.

I've been a proponent of adding Gonzaga, maybe BYU, St Mary's and another couple of programs for an east/west divisional alignment since the BE was raided years ago and 'Cuse & L'ville left.

Let's do it.  Evolve or die.  Lets create a top tier hoops only conference that can't be ignored when the football schools finally consolidate their monopoly and blow up the NCAA for good.

Isnt BYU joining the Big 12? Every one wants Zags in the BE, but difficult travel.

Mark Few who was assistant under Dan Monson who won 75% of his games in his two years at Gonzaga before taking Minnesota job.  Monson set the groundwork for the program.  Also prior to Monson was Dan Fitzgerald who won 60% of his games.  Me thinks Fordham would give life and limb to win 60% or 75% of their games so not the right comparison.

Recall that many pundits said Gonzaga would be doomed when Few’s predecessor Dan Monson bolted the Zags for Minnesota after thanking Gonzaga to the Elite 8.

Recall also the many who said that Butler was finished Brad Steven’s bolted for the NBA after taking Butler to the NCAA Championship games in 20 09 and 2010 season.

Kentucky big blue  basketball madness on Comcast ch 402  now

will St. Johns be televised

Yes, it will be simultaneously broadcast on all the major networks as they will be preempting their normal broadcasts for this critically important sporting event.
