Around the Big East

St. John’s

The Red Storm are one of the winners of the offseason, in my opinion. Most importantly, welcoming junior forward Julian Champagnie back to the fold after he led the BIG EAST with 19.8 points per game last season makes the Johnnies an NCAA Tournament contender.

Reigning BIG EAST Freshman and Defensive Player of the Year Posh Alexander has the makeup of a player who should only get better in his second year in Queens. While the Johnnies had some departures from their roster early in the transfer cycle, they made up for it with quality additions.

One area of concern for the Johnnies in the past has been size. Reigning BIG EAST Coach of the Year Mike Anderson and his staff addressed that need by bringing in 6-9 Aaron Wheeler from Purdue. Wheeler, who appeared in all 28 games last season and started five of those contests, averaged over 18 minutes per game for a Purdue squad that earned a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament. By all accounts from Carnesecca Arena, Wheeler was a bright spot during summer workouts. St. John’s was not done there, adding Fordham transfer Joel Soriano. The New York native averaged 10.4 points and 9.2 boards per game in the Atlantic 10 last season.

With Vermont transfer Stef Smith and Rutgers transfer Montez Mathis coming in, Alexander will have fellow weapons in the backcourt in addition to his high school teammate, sophomore Dylan Addae-Wusu. The pieces are on the table, and SJU has two All-BIG EAST First Team candidates with Champagnie and Alexander. Year three of the Anderson Era should be the best yet.

.

At +1000 , with the level of talent we have now, it’s worth it to throw a Hundge on our guys.

I'm fine with 1000 to 1.  UConn should be 750 to 1.

Frankly,it is not good,go to the race track how often does a even  a 50 -1 win. You will first grow a beard
Look looks like we should be much better than last yr,that’s  a positive . I will wait until we win a few games in the big East and use that as a guide. That said ,I like the team much better talent than last yr. Lets see what coach can do with the talent. He has some exp on this team which can only help

Wasn't it Stephens that was recently hired by MAAC or NEC as director of officiating?
America East and the MAAC.  Article says it is unknown if he will retain those positions.

Jay Wright’s greatness is he knows exactly the type of player and Student he wants to bring to Nova .  He has done that year in and year out .   He hasn’t gone all in on getting the 1 and done players but , gets kids he knows can improve to a NBA Career . Not all will but , he usually has 1 or 2 that will . Also , he’s able to keep them for a couple or 3 years and that helps build Team Success .   I think our Coach knows exactly the type player he wants too.  And , Mike wants kids of good character as well . That will pay dividends on the Court .  He’s gotten his share of transfers but , has also focused on getting the true Recruit from high school . And , many  of his incoming are local players .  He’s gone to Florida this year and gotten 2 potential high ranked players . It bodes well . Hopefully with Results like Wright .
