I think that is a big blow to the Hoyas who were counting on his production.
They lost a few players after the season and will be very young and inexperienced.
A player with King's size, experience and past production would have been a huge asset this season.
No one can fault Ewing's effort but he doesn't seem to catch a break.

It seems like part of the issue over there is he's reaching for high level talent, but turning a blind eye to the fact that many of these kids may come with a ton of baggage/issues. There's probably a reason over programs passed on some of these kids.

There was an interesting article today in The Athletic about possible Big East expansion candidates. It gave a lot of the same ole suggestions like Gonzaga, Wichita St, Loyola-Chicago, VCU, Dayton, SLU etc.

But one interesting idea they had was adding Gonzaga, St. Mary's and UNLV. UNLV is a name I hadn't heard before but the article called them the UConn of the west, as their basketball has been good in the past, but their football is atrocious, and hasn't won a game in 2 years. They also laid out how a schedule could possibly work for Gonzaga, and SMC coming to the eastern schools (SJU, Nova, PC, SH and UConn) on weekends only etc.

Overall a very thought provoking article. I think adding another modern blue blood in Gonzaga, and expanding to the Las Vegas market would be a homerun for the conference, which could set them up for a big payday on the new TV deal. Plus I wouldn't mind going to a road game every year in Las Vegas.

Probably not a popular opinion but I would create a super basketball conference.  It will help keep you aligned with the power 5 football conferences as a safeguard.  Can't have Gonzaga traveling to the east coast all the time so create a Big East west version.  Maybe 18 teams total.  9 and 9 or 10 and 10.  Go big or go home.

Spitballing

East stays the same but you move Creighton out West.

West:
Creighton
Gonzaga
St. Mary's
St. Louis
Wichita State
Pepperdine or LMU (for LA market)

That leaves 4 spots
UNLV?
Portland (growing market?)
San Diego (another catholic school and who can beat that weather)
San Fran (double up that market with St. Mary's?
BYU (I don't see the fit as I don't see them ditching football)
Others?

Hartford Courant;

“Last Friday, UConn was staging First Night festivities after having to cancel the event last year, allowing more than 6,000 students into Gampel Pavilion. There was a lot of excitement as the men’s and women’s basketball teams were introduced followed by a long lull as workers struggled to get one of the basket stanchions anchored to the floor properly. Eventually, they gave up, The women’s team scrimmaged a few minutes in a half-court shootaround.Hurley, who wanted to use the occasion for a blue-white scrimmage where his young players could get acclimated to shooting before a crowd, called it a night as the arena was emptying.”

Hurley; “It took two things to pull the event off,” he said. “Putting enough air in the basketball and getting the baskets to work. ... To have 6,000 students show up when you don’t have a [musical] act, and not be able to have a show, that can’t happen.“I’m a part of that failure, obviously the basketball programs are a part of that failure that we weren’t able to get the basket up and deliver the evening that the students should have gotten, and I apologize and we should all apologize for that. It shouldn’t happen. It can’t happen.”

That's interesting that Stef Smith is the 2nd guy that CMA choose to bring.  I've never known him to choose a guy he thinks will just be a role player or bench player as a representative at media day, especially a guy in his first year in the program.   Zach B has been saying for weeks that the staff loves what Smith has been bringing.

I didn't see many in the projected lineup thread, including myself, as having Smith as a starter, but looks like he's positioning himself to be a starter and a significant contributor.

I have Smith as likely third leading scorer, don't really put much importance on starters as opposed to finishers which I believe he will be.

UCONN and their problems up there in Storrs makes me think...who cares about som pom pom rally in the middle of nowhere....The Garden...NY....Long island....we are the big ticket! There is a different attitude with this administration AD...Coach...players...University. Such an exciting time to be an SJU fan... Steph Smith and Julian are great representatives of this great school and program....so proud...Go St Johns!

NYC and LI are not mutually exclusive (geographically speaking, however maybe they are philosophically)

Don't see us luring a kid away from Storrs by playing up our proximity to Long Island. Kinda be like Pitino trying to sell a kid on all the advantages of Westchester. Just don't see it being a factor, but I guess anything is possible.
