Around the Big East

I’m told UConn men wanted to play Villanova at home 2/25, a sure Quad 1 game that would’ve evened home/road sked 9-9. When that didn’t work out, UConn wasn’t interested in other options, such as 10th road game vs opponent not certain to be Quad 1.

@AmoreCourant
Sorry but I will take every opportunity to jump on UConn.

If you look at their schedule the only team that could be is St. Johns. This in a nutshell is everything I find annoying about their current program/brand/whatever. They still project the cockiness and confidence of the Calhoun era but they have none of it. It's all false bravado. You wanted to be back in the league so take the game! Where's the pride?

By the way if there was any indication whatsoever this was because the AD or Hurley or whoever wanted to play less games to look out for the well being of the players I wouldn't say anything but this is obvious gamesmanship. They're close to the bubble too and they want to play the low risk/high reward game but not the high risk/high reward game that could push you over the top? What a surprise. I rolled my eyes so hard I sprained my neck. Cowards. Calhoun would take the game in a heartbeat.

Be aware that I will take any UConn bait you guys put out there. Also, much like this post, it will usually be a wild overreaction.

If I lost to someone that I thought I was better than, I would want to settle up.
That's just me.

Providence looked like absolute dog crap tonight. UConn was fine. They have lots of length and are potentially a pretty complete team, but to me the story of the game was that Providence looked like a team that wasn't interested in playing.  Don't think I've ever seen that from a Cooley squad.

Providence lifer, or does anyone think he thinks he might be getting stale there and gives BC a try if they call?

I don't get how Uconn dictates their schedule.  Where is the conference on this?  Let's win the games in front of us and make the NCAA tourny.

I've got some Ken Pom updates after the win over X.

The Big East is the 5th best conference in the NCAA.  Low by historical standards, but what do I know.  Big 10, Big 12, SEC, ACC.  PAC 12 #6.

SJU ranked #64.(X at 60, Providence at 73).

SJU over DePaul 79-71 on Saturday.

Ken, sorry about poaching all of your data, but SJU fans need to know you're a believer.

Julian #5 on all Ken Pom team. (Sandro Mamux%$#@ #1)

Gman, why would the conference say or do anything to UConn? The BE was so eager to bring uconn back in, they embarrassed themselves by acting like glorified fans, even though they cannot be trusted.
The other members who stuck it out or joined to build up the new BE must have been thrilled to be forced to vote for allowing a state school with more financial muscle back in.
The BE essentially saved their basketball program. It should have let them rot in Storrs instead.

(Not calling you out, just not using the quote function).

A Kranmars sighting!

Having UConn back in the league is good for the league - and also good for UConn.  But good for the league is good for all of the teams in the league, including us.  Raises the national profile some, brings in more TV money, raises the level of competition, sells tickets and merchandise - all good.

LJSA I don't think BC is a step up from Providence as a basketball coaching job.  Cooley's name was in the mix at Michigan before they hired Howard.  I guess it isn't impossible that he'd move on if a program like that called him, but I don't see him making a lateral or downward move and I also don't see Providence firing him.

I really hope UConn doesn't get rewarded and make the NCAA tournament, they've been bs'ing and trying to use Covid protocols to their advantage, which is wrong.  They paused when a ref tested positive, the other team that was involved (can't remember who it was) played their next game and UConn still kept pausing, they were losing too many games without Bouknight, and was trying to buy some time.  And then look at the teams they've conviently paused for... @St. John's, Xavier, and Villanova twice.  They are going to get away with only playing those programs once, and apparently they get to decide if they want to make them up or not.  I hope Georgetown beats them twice.

Yukon should be required to play the first night of the BET regardless of their record due to lack of games played.

The BE should seed each team based on wins and not record and thus you are rewarded for playing more games and managing COVID.

@Making Plays:

UConn is not deciding to "pause" at all. It is the state of CT and their strict Covid protocols that they have to follow. It is not the athletic dept or even the school  making these decisions. That's why when the ref from their Butler game on 1/26/21 tested positive after the game, UConn had to cancel two games, while Butler, following their own protocols, kept on playing.

If you check out Hurley's quotes over the past few months you can see how frustrated he is. You think he wanted to shut down his program three different times for 10-14 days? And by the way, they are 0-3 in games after returning from shutdown.

I know the game is almost certainly gone but I'm gonna throw this marker out there just in case I end up looking bright (a rare occurance...)

What are the odds that sometime in the next couple of days (after seeing how good they looked with a healthy Bouknight against Providence) we suddenly hear the Huskies don't mind dropping by on 2/25? I'm aware this is a long shot but based on the weirdeness of this season and the cherry picking-nature of only accepting league games they "want" to play...it wouldn't completely shock me.

Also don't mistake my trashing the gamesmanship for trashing their squad. Bouknight is awesome and with him they feel almost as dangerous as Villanova. Asking for and getting to play UConn with a healthy Bouknight may be like the dog who caught the car but the whole point of my gripe is I don't care. I want to see our guys match up.

Additionally from that Providence/UConn game...Bouknight and Duke really seem like two prospects heading in different directions. Duke looks like he may be playing his way off of draft boards while almost every time I watch Bouknight I'm even more sure he's going in the lottery.

Since UConn's two pauses in 2021 are due to a game ref testing positive after having worked a UConn game and the other time due to Covid issues with the Xavier team.  How does UConn's "managing Covid" apply here?

With their top 2 players out, Depaul is awful.  But somehow, they are up 7 w/ 6 min to go in the 1st half.

If they do not get either player back, we might set a record for most forced turnovers in a game.  our def would rattle this depaul team to no end.

Wouldn't mind a DePaul upset here.

it might quench the Blue Demons thirst for a win and they won't be as determined Saturday.

also increases the chances we can pass Seton Hall in the standings if we keep winning and beat them in the rematch
