Around the Big East
What is the date we officially start panicking on the 2021 draft class? I havent followed high school recruiting in the past. Do we still have alot of time to get recruits for 2021? Give me a date where we should start panicking if we dont have another kid by?
Wednesday 3pm. Personally don't know how one can be a college hoop or college football fan and not follow recruiting, the life blood of the programs. Nothing personal Duke as I know you are a good fan of St. John's.

DePaul will pick up ANOTHER top 100 player in a few hours (David Jones).

This is shaping up to be the best recruiting class ever for the Big East with 8 teams in the top 31 and Creighton at #56. We're at #77.

Butler freshman Scooby Johnson will miss the 20-21 season due to a torn ACL, per release.

Was expected to be in Bulldogs' rotation.

David 'Deivi' Jones, the No. 82 overall prospect in the 2021 Top150, has announced on Instagram that he has committed to DePaul.

The 6-foot-6 and 195-pound wing out of the Dominican Republic committed to the Blue Demons over programs including Clemson, Houston, Illinois, Louisville, Maryland, Oregon and Pittsburgh.

Marc Hsu was lead recruiter on this one.

DePaul’s 2021 Recruiting Class:

Four-star SG Ahamad Bynum
Four-star SF Keon Edwards
Four-star SF David Jones
Combo guard Brett Hardt

The Blue Demons are ranked #8 in the country in the 247 Sports Rankings. #DPUBB

We are dead last in recruiting class rankings for 21’ as of now. That is a problem, and I don’t care how much we can identify underrated talent. Need to step it up and grab some players. I’m concerned as I can’t figure out why this is such a problem for us? We play a high tempo style, winning coach, MSG etc. I don’t believe that all players don’t want to play defense. It’s concerning as a fan to say the least. Jucos aren’t gonna solve the optics problem for fans here, and fans buy tickets and what not based on these things.

Can't be Letaio drawing them in on his own. Must be Hsu..either he's just really good at sales & relationships, or there is a bit of questionable tactics...or a combo.

Got to be Marc Hsu. He 'outperformed' at WKU also. I recall comments that he operated on the edge, and I think he was in the mix for an AC spot here early on in CMA's tenure.

Safely a shark is common view. Every program imo needs a little of that to keep up.

How are we even at 77? We have one 3 star kid. Thats it!

Maybe that was last year's ranking as I seem to recall some recruiting service having us with that ranking of our 4 recruits not counting Toro.

There are only 76 Power 6 teams and only a handful of other teams who consistently get 3 star or better talent (some teams in the WCC, A10 and AAC). That, combined with not everyone signing yet, is why our number isn't that low. If we don't pick up anyone else then I think we'll finish in the 100's.

There's going to be a lot of pressure to perform on the court this year. Losing LJ and striking out on every top recruit has made for a disappointing off-season. The Big East has killed us for 5 straight years and the recruiting gap is starting to get a LOT larger than before. If we finish 7th or lower again then I'd become pretty concerned. A year plus is more than enough time for a veteran P6 coach to pick up a 4 star player or 2.

My take is this: we have 6 seniors for the 2021-2022 season(roberts, caraher, duke, gwill, moore, cole). Posh and penny will be getting big minutes. So thats 8 guys who will be upper classman who will get the manoriy of minutes.

After that year, we have what 6 schollys open?? Maybe the staff is focused on restocking the roster for 2022. They are going to need multiple 4 star kids coming in for that class. They will have plenty of playing time to offer.

These guys dont hit a home run for the class, they are done. Heck if there arent any big time recruits coming in, posh might hit the road and transfer.

Thats how I am justifying this lackluster 2021 class.

Yeah, we will have enough players for the next couple year but I'm not yet convinced they will get us out of the basement. Not a knock on them as we've been there for most of the past couple decades, but it's now more about the Big East stepping up big time in recruiting.

Before Riley went to Georgetown I drafted a post about recruiting class rankings vs results on the court. Didn't want to post it because we were all so down/shocked by his announcement, but maybe I'll post tomorrow. Spoiler: rankings matter, a lot.

The issue isn/t whether Associate Head Coach TJ Cleveland working hard on recruiting or hardly working on recruiting.

The issue is why St. John's lags behind its Big East competition on the recruiting front.

Source: Kevin Freeman will be named the next assistant coach at UConn.

Good recruiter

Realize staff plays things close to the vest, but kind of depressing how dead things seem on the recruiting front lately, especially with our competitors so active and successful.

Look, there is no reason to dance around this issue with statements like "i know the staff keep things close to the vest". The fact is, this staff is not recruiting well. That doesn't mean they aren't doing a good job overall, or that they can't overcome bad recruiting with finding a few diamonds in the rough that fit our style, premium player development, and so on. But recruiting has been bad. Other teams in conference are running circles around us. We seem to have just rapid fired out a ton of offers to kids and we just aren't getting traction. We are slow to close as usual with the few guys we do have traction with like Cuffe. Excuse it away as much as you like - other schools are cheating, we need to win first, our facilities stink, etc etc etc but the undeniable fact here is that recruiting is not going well.

Fair to have recruiting concerns. 21 & 22 results will determine a lot imo. Can’t coach up everyone.
