Around the Big East

Down 18 with under 15 left, UCONN comes back to win by 11 with very little from Bouknight. Had Indiana and WV in a teaser last night. Indy came back from 12 down in 2nd half and WV 19 down in 2nd half. When it comes to gamlbing, better to be lucky then good.

Our next opponent, Creighton, is blowing out Seton Hall by 32.

Ironically, I'm kind of glad about this.  They'll beat us either way, but I didn't want them coming off a loss, where they would be angry.

The game between UConn and Villanova at Gampel Pavilion on January 15th has been postponed due to issues related to COVID-19, per release.

UConn’s seven-foot freshman, Javonte-Brown-Ferguson, will transfer from the program, a source confirmed to @Stockrisers. Consensus four-star recruit coming out of high school.

Chronically injured;

Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard says Bryce Aiken (ankle) will be out a few weeks. Harvard transfer has played in just four games this year

So does the one-free-transfer rule apply in-conference?  :)

Xavier's  Ben Stanley tore his ACL and he's out the rest of this season.

kid really can't stay injury free

"Johnson signed his Letter of Intent as part of UConn’s three-man recruiting class ranked No. 8 nationally by http://247sports.com/]247Sports.com, and next year he will join Sanogo, who committed to the Huskies in May and is now a freshman at the Big East school. Johnson and Sanogo are part of a growing pipeline of elite New Jersey players at or committed to UConn. Sophomore guard Jalen Gaffney is from Columbus and redshirt junior point guard R.J. Cole is a Linden native.“Recruiting New Jersey and the metropolitan area is a huge part of our recruiting plan, the strong footprint that we want in terms of the geography of our approach,” Hurley, a Jersey City native and former Seton Hall standout and https://www.nj.com/rutgersbasketball/]Rutgers assistant coach, said this week on a Zoom call in response to a question from NJ Advance Media. “Guys that play high school and AAU and grassroots ball in Jersey, they have the makeup. They’ve got toughness, they’ve got the edge to come and play at a place like UConn, and handle the pressure and expectations of playing at a place like UConn.”

Providence vs. Xavier is on Fox now and, so far, looks like a good match-up.  I had already noticed it on the stat sheets, but Nate Watson really is a different player this year.  Providence looks to get him the ball on many possessions.  He is strong, very forceful and aggressive in the paint.  Needless to say, he will be a major chore for us to defend.

Watson leaned out and I've also noticed in a few games how vocal he is on the floor calling out positions and being a leader.   We don't have that unfortunately.

And Duke, too. All these teams have what seems like 7 or 8 players who can shoot the 3. Excellent form, great rotation, find the open spots on the floor, etc. We have 1 at best. This has been going on for years at St. John's. So tired of all these "athletic" types that are fundamentally poor shooters.

Watson really paid the price in offseason  getting into much better shape.

Providence vs. Xavier was a very good game.  Xavier, particularly, looked good with some really good players on the floor.   For Providence, they rely on Duke (BE POY candidate) and Watson (17 pts., 15 rbs.) a little too much.

Xavier is deep and has to love what they are getting from this group:

Zach Freemantle
Paul Scruggs
Nate Johnson (Grad trasfser)
Adam Kunkel  (Gad transfer)
Colby Jones (freshman -hit game winner)
Jason Carter (great duo in the paint with Freemantle)

Xavier is truly deep. Beyond those guys above they other decent ranked kids like Tandy & Odom that are both top 100, 4 star kids. Think Wilcher is 4 star too, but haven't seen much from him.

Wilcher will get more playing time due to an injury to Stanley (?), I believe in our game. Wilcher had 2 big 3s early on in today's game. Another player with great form on his jumper.

Actually we are not a very athletic team at all.
