Around the Big East

I don’t know the answer but really ? They couldn’t make their own schedule ? I don’t know the answer I’m asking

It is not about ND putting together a regular season schedule, it is about bowl tie ins.

The various non BCS bowls have contracts with the different conferences.

For example the Pinstripe Bowl has contracted with the B1G and the ACC from which its participating teams come from. The Pinstripe will not invite a team that is not a member of the loose 2 conferences.

The majority of Bowls have t conference tie ins which makes it hard for an independent to play post season.

again I'm totally Naive. ND needs a conference for a bowl invite ? What if they just played a great schedule ?

There are only 4 bowl games worth watching (Rose, Orange, Cotton and Sugar). The other 15 are the equivalent of the NIT in college basketball,.

Bowl games may become a thing of the past as the NCAA has adopted the playoff model. The pool is going to expand. I question if it will be to eight or 16 teams - six won't cut it.

The only Bowl games worth are the semi finals and finals of the college playoff. Those rotate amongst the Bowl games.

For example last year the Rose Bowl was Penn State/Utah. A completely meaningless game. Several players even “sat out” the game. The Fiesta Bowl was TCU/Michigan which was a playoff game and was far more worth watching than the Rose Bowl.

I assume the Bowl games will eventually turn into “playoff” games when the field expands. I believe the field expands after this season is done.

From what I have read and heard (I am a huge college football fan), under the new system that begins in the 2024 season, it will be a 12-team playoff format which will be made up of six highest ranked conference champions, plus the six highest-ranked teams who aren't among the conference champions. The top four conference champions will receive a first round bye.

The new system assures that at least one Group of 5 team will reach the playoffs each year and also allows for more than one Group of 5 team to replace a Power 5 team. since ND is an independent, they can receive an at large bid but can never receive a bye since they are can’t be a conference champion.

Bowls will still be around. Seeds 5 - 12 will play the first round with seeds 5-8 hosting at their home field. Seeds 1 - 4 will then play the winners of the quarterfinals at one of the New Years 6 Bowls with the two bowls not included, hosting the semifinals.

I edited my comments just you!

However, here is a PSA to my fans:
The rocket man does not follow grammatical rules. I subscribe to the free form verse style made popular by other great poets like E.E. Cummings, William Faulkner Alan Ginzberg.

In fact, should Uconn leave, I will HOWL in celebration 🍾
I think it was e.e. cummings

Notre Dame is truly America’s Team when it comes to football . They have such a widespread and loyal fan base that it makes other Schools PALE in comparison .

As such , I agree ND has a list of teams that would want to play them , regardless of whether they were in a Conference or not .

As for Bowl Games , if the Irish had such a powerful team and were unbeaten , no Bowl Game or even the Playoff Bowls would dare to exclude them . ND has that kind of clout in Football .

Unlike most other College Football Powers ,they are the only one with a National Fan Base . It’s why they have that NBC Contract .

In my opinion , ND could even revert back to its Independent status , if they dug their heels in enough . Does anyone think USC , Stanford , Vanderbilt , Duke , Michigan , Michigan State , BC would give up playing them ? Never !

As to what that could mean for the Irish rejoining the BE in BB , I have no idea .

I used the word Pale in the first sentence . No doubt mjmaher might reach for one, given such a Incentive .

Nova Top 5 group looking as strong as a typical nova team. Moore and Dixon top notch nova players and the three transfers bring a lot. And before anyone brings up the fact Ware hasn’t shown much, we all know he would be being talked up plenty if he were coming here.

Top 7 BE schools all have the talent to finish top 3 IMO. I’ve got Gtown outside of that group, admittedly not as up to date on who came and went for them.

If it was a Jay Wright coached team, I’d probably have them in the top 4 and ahead of us. I don’t think Neptune is bad, but it’s definitely more of a question mark.

Pretty sure I read that Georgetown has recruited even more 4 stars than we have and I’ve seen us credited with as many as 6 overall. Given that fact and with Cooley as coach would probably include them in that group.

Could be. I’ll have to look closer. First thought was two 5Th year guys as good as Soriano and Dingle puts us ahead of them.

ND will see what happens and make a decision on whether or not to remain an independent in football. They could pick the conference it wants to be a part of if they go that route. As it stands now, they cannot get a bye no matter how good their team is since they are not in a conference. That is one of the many things they will probably factor in to any decision they make regarding staying as an independent in football or joining a conference.
