Around the Big East

Remember Louis' last game at Alumni Hall in Feb. 1980. We lost because the upstate ref called a blocking foul on Reggie Carter rather than a charge on Orr. Louie Carnessecca and I (and many others who were there that day) will go to our graves believing it was a charge all the way. It was a great game as both team had 20+ wins and 2 losses. We were up 71-70 thanks to Reggie and got a cuse turn over but the Rencher missed front end of a 1-1 and then Orr w/ help from the ref put Cuse up 72-71 at about the buzzer. AH probably paid off fire marshalls as it was the largest crowd I remember being there--SRO.
I was there that day. Still the most memorable game at AH I ever attended. Still a charge. RIP Louis Orr.

Out of all the Big East teams, Creighton has the least depth. They cannot survive a starter, particularly Kalkbrenner, being out. Takes them out of any top ten consideration as far as I’m concerned. No reason we can’t beat them at home.
King has been the one bright spot in this stretch. Very interested to see how McDermott plays him and kalkbrenner together when he is back healthy. Not a conventional match in today’s game but it would be dumb not to with their complete lack of depth. Zero bench points tonight until the final minute.

Quick Louie Orr memory. Summer of 1980, I attended Cuse as part of a Pre College Program between my junior and senior years of high school. One day, a bunch of us walked over to Manley to play some pick up games. We did ok and won our first game. Second game, we got matched up against Louie, Roosevelt Bowie and Marty Head. I was the tallest guy on our team, 6’4”, and got matched up with Bowie. I personally, and we collectively got destroyed. 21-6 was the final. I did score 2 points on Bowie.
Louie was really cool. We chatted after the game, and he wished me well during my final year of high school, and with my college choice. Sad to see him go. Much too early. RIP.

Summer of 2019 I met Coach Orr in Alabama as Georgetown was interested in one of my sons teammates and I had the opportunity to talk with him at length. An absolute gentleman and a real class act. I mentioned how I thought he got the real short end of the stick at Seton hall and he was very appreciative of my comments.
Went far far too early. May he rest in peace, one of the real good guys out there.

Now that the non-conference is over for every team in the BE, what's everyone's thoughts on the BE and how teams have performed, is the conference, better, worse, or about where you thought it would be?

Me personally, I think it's a bit overreaction to the BE, I think it's underperformed a little, but for the most part it's where I thought it would be just the order I thought it would be in is different.

Most people probably thought Big East was a 4-7 bid league heading into the season with Creighton, Xavier, Nova, and UConn being the guaranteed tournament teams, with Providence, St. John's, and Seton Hall being bubble teams. Marq and Butler in rebuild mode, and Georgetown and DePaul being really bad as usual.

And with the non-conference finished it turned out that UConn, Xavier, and Marquette, are the guaranteed tournament teams, with St. John's, Providence, Creighton, and Butler being bubble teams. Nova and Seton Hall adjusting to new coaching, and DePaul and Georgetown never disappointing and being who the are.

So, instead of probably being a 4-7 bid league this year, it's probably more of a 4-6 bid league this year. I like St. John's position a lot, they control their own destiny, they just need a couple signature wins in conference, probably need to win 2 out of the 6 games against UConn, Marq, and Xavier. And avoid bad losses (DePaul and Georgetown) and be around the .500conference record mark and they are most likely dancing.

Thanks for the story. That’s a cool memory to have. Now I have visions of a 6’4” dude trying to post up Bowie all day. Tough day at the office. 😳🙂

Louis Orr is a cautionary tale for all ADs.

He was a total class act who kept Seton Hall respectable during his tenure. Never great, but never awful.

What happens next? Delusions of grandeur in South Orange.

Orr is out. Gonzo is in. And disaster ensues.
This is the lesson for my beloved Syracuse Orange football program. Our Orr was Paul Pasqualoni. Since we fired him we are 80-133 or so
