Around the Big East

Also, as far as St. John's tournament chances in conference, as of right now in the BE they will have 7 quad 1 opportunities and 6 quad 2 opportunities, not including the BE tournament. That's 13 chances to get good wins on their resume. If they can't win 6-7 of those opportunities and avoid losing to DePaul and Georgetown to avoid bad losses, then they don't deserve to make the tournament.

It’s funny what cold shooting can do for a coaches perception. I would be very surprised if a straw poll by coaches and media wouldn’t have McDermott amongs the top 10 offensive coaches in college basketball.

Last 5 games they have shot 38.5% from the field. I promise you McDermott didn’t forget how to coach.

Yeah, Lunardi no longer big cheese with solid metric guys passing him by
I don't think he ever was but he's the ESPN guy so he has the best 'brand awareness' especially with casuals. That said I don't think he's necessarily bad and I appreciate how much variance goes into trying to project what a bunch of 50-70 year old ADs are going to do in their conference room in mid-March.

As for the larger discussion, yes Zach is just making a somewhat inflammatory remark to get more views/clicks. Everybody in the media does it. The BE only getting 3 bids is not out of the realm of possibility but that's still highly unlikely.

The last bracket matrix update from 12/7 had 5 BE teams in with SJU being the last team in the field. Overall, I think 4 BE teams being safely in (Conn, Xavier, Creighton, Marquette) with whichever two out of the next two rises during conference play (SJU, Nova, Butler, SHU, Prov) hovering around the bubble thoughout February and March is a reasonable assessment at this point.

I think 4 also

Zach loves stirring the pot and overreacting after every single game, he's been a huge Big East hater this year. He's been on twitter saying 12 wins in the BE wouldn't get St. John's in the tournament, when a team that's won that many games in conference has never missed it.

As of Saturday, Lunardi, the best at projecting the field has 5 Big East teams in... UConn, Xavier, Marquette, Creighton, and St. John's. Big East still has 9 teams top 75 in Kenpom and 6 of those are in the top 50. The isn't the best the Big East has looked, nobody is denying that, but to declare it a 3-bid league in December is just overreacting, IMO. Outside of Georgetown, everyone else's numbers aren't bad enough to completely count them out of the mix, and once conference play starts there's going to be upsets and teams getting big road wins that's going to help their NET and put them in the tournament picture.

St. John's disappeared from the bracket today.

I think they are in the bracket as an Automatic Qualifier as we won the only conference game. We are an 11 seed but Lunardi only lists four Big East teams in (Conn, Xavier,Marquette and Creighton so I assume that if we weren't in first place we wouldn't be in the bracket.

Can we have a prohibition on any references to brackets, rankings, KenPom, NET etc until February 1? Wouldn't that make all of our lives just a little better?
It's a slow week. At this point my concern are the opponents ahead. We can't go back and change our schedule, beat Iowa State or improve the Big East's non conference record.

Lunardi isn’t even in the top 80 at projecting the field lol you just make things up out of nowhere.

I didn't make up anything. Lundardi is by far the most popular bracketologist and been referred to as the best in the business for many years, that's why ESPN has him locked up and why he's all over every TV set come march.

You posting that thinking you made a point is like someone saying Steph Curry isn't the best shooter in the world, because he doesn't have the highest make percentage, there's different levels, Lundardi has been doing this for 25+ years, he made bracketlogy an actual thing, nobody cares about Crazy Sports Dude and Bracket Dom (the 2 leaders on that link you sent), those are just dudes with a computer and free time.

That's probably an error. Because even the AQ is still counted towards number of teams that make the tournament, also St. John's was among his last 4 in Saturday, they don't jump completely out of the picture in 2 days after a win. My best guess is if they weren't AQ, they would still be in last 4 in, or first 4 out.

Sticking to a completely wrong claim when provided with clear evidence of the contrary is a bold strategy but completely on brand, I’ll give you that.

Like I said Lunardi has brand awareness thanks to being with ESPN for so long and people like you who just buy the ESPN narrative nonsense buy into it because if it’s on ESPN it must be true

Dude, I'm not sure what you're problem is, but you need to learn to read, you seem to have a little attitude and act like you know me, and I don't even know who you are. For those that can read I said he's THE BEST, I didn't say he was the most accurate by percentage in 2022. When someone is the best that includes their ENTIRE body of work over their entire career not just in the moment, Lunardi has been projecting the field consistently and being very accurate for over 25 years, nobody else has his resume, that's why he's considered the best, that's why he gets paid the big bucks and the other guys just do it for fun, it isn't because of some conspiracy narrative that ESPN came up with that you made up in your head. ✌️

Not worth getting into a pages long argument about Lunardi but the link with the rankings isn't just 2022 it's a 5 year weighted average and he still doesn't crack the top 80. By your logic Jim Boeheim would be considered THE BEST coach in college basketball right now. Obviously ESPN isn't going to kick him to the curb when he's the only one casuals know and he knows how to talk on TV.

Anyway, this is another pretty cool to use for some bracket projections especially this far out. Currently projects the Big East at 4.4 bids which seems reasonable.
