Around the Big East

Looks like UConn is adding to their monster class w a rim protector who was on our radar at one point in 2021:

Providence also cleaning up on the 23’ trail. We have some legitimate catching up to do the conference is recruiting at a elite level.

Agree thats why I have held off on the accolades that many have given the staff so far regarding recruiting. The. staff's recruiting success will be measured as how well they do versus other Big East programs. Brandon Gardner is a great "start" but more high level kids need to be brought in to consider the class competitive. As Astoria so eloquently put it " We have some legitimate catching up to do".

Yes Paultzman, what happened to our uptick in recruiting? Need to get at least one of Clarke or King Carl or risk falling further behind in the BE arms race.
Concerning, but we’ll see. Obviously you need a solid recruiting base annually, supplemented by transfers. With latter, it is a crap shoot you can’t depend on every year. Curbelo and Jones level of transfers is not something you can expect to replicate each cycle and frankly imo the jury is out on Andre.

Penetrate and dish. That's Curbelo's ticket. That and smothering on the ball defense. His offense should mostly come in transition and on drives to the hoop.

I think he can excel in that role. If he tries to prove he is a scorer at all three levels to silence the doubters, and there are many, he may be sitting beside coach for long stretches. Especially if other shot makers emerge.

Do you think he can do it? I doubt it :)
Let him prove it to me, too.

In my view, he doesn't have to become dead-eye Dick from downtown all of a sudden. He just needs to take shots in the flow without forcing anything and making a decent percentage. For me that would be 30% on wide open three pointers with his feet set and shoulders squared. That would be enough to make defenders not sag off of him so much and would open up the offense more for him and others.

I believe he can achieve the above once he works with the staff for awhile. I think this style of play will be the salve his soul needs. He brings a lot of good things to the table but he has work to do, mainly with his shooting and also his high risk high reward type of plays that can make a highlight (or lowlight) reel. I don't think the turnovers will be a problem because CMA's teams almost invariably have a good assist/turnover ratio.

So, to answer your question, yes I think CMA will get the best out of him and he will turn out to be a really good player for the Johnnies.

The staff continues to make strides in recruiting but they are not on the level of the other BE programs you compare them to for a couple of reasons.

Facilities, attendance, NIL, long history of irrelevance on the court and other factors have made this a tough slog for the staff. They are working their tails off and progress is being made but let's not pretend they are on even footing with UConn, Villanova, and most of the rest of the BE.

The roster has definitely been improved and the coaches have taken mostly 2 and 3 star recruits and coached them up to outplay their rankings. Gardner and Storr are both significant signings for this staff that took a 2* Champagnie to a chance to make an NBA roster and a 3* Posh to BE defensive POY as a true freshman. This staff seems to get the most out of their players talents, except for a few head cases.

Go ahead and give them their accolades. They deserve them.

Wait, they are not on even footing with programs like Providence, Creighton, The Hall, Georgetown, Etc??? You point out the disadvantages but how about the advantages like MSG, the proximity to such programs as CTK and the great local AAU programs, the draw of New York City etc. Heck, the Big East tournament is played on the johnnies home court and yet we have not made it to the Friday night games in what seems like a lifetime. Sure there are always disadvantages but there are several advantages as well and yet the other programs mentioned above seem to do OK on the recruiting trail don't they? In college hoops the coaches make the programs. UConn was never successful till Calhoun showed up, The Hall, talk about a disadvantage, made its way up with good leadership/coaches, Georgetown was nothing till Thompson arrived etc. It's up to the coat and staff to make the program successful, finding excuses and stating they are disadvantaged is does not hold water when it comes to Big East programs. Perhaps disadvantaged when it comes to the Kentuckys, Dukes, Kansas of the world but not Big East teams. There is plenty of opportunity for this staff to make its mark and I sure as hell hope they do but at this point in time they are a bit behind on the HS recruiting front.

When the other teams fans outnumber yours, I don't see much of a MSG homecourt advantage for the Johnnies. Plus, the school is losing revenue by having to pay usage fees and that, coupled with poor attendance, hurts the Johnnies pocketbook.

Also, as you yourself point out, the Johnnies have not made a splash in what seems like a lifetime. Just imagine how long ago that would seem to the teenagers the Johnnies are trying to recruit. Other coaches who looked at the Johnnies job opening a few years ago decided to pass based on what they saw at the time. The revamp and rebuild just seemed too steep, at least to the coaches who were offered the job and declined.

But, regardless of all that, you got to play the hand you are dealt. That's why I think this year is so huge for the future direction of the program and that won't be impacted by Gardner, or any other potential 2023 signee. The kids on this roster must show something that makes other kids want to sign on and be apart of. Winning will do that and it can negate or blunt other negative impacts on recruiting.

Win. Do that and other kids will come. That's why I love Storr and Gardner coming here. They believe they can win here without that success having been attained as of yet by this staff at SJU. So for me, postseason success this season will be the ultimate recruiting tool for SJU.

To your point my son is 19 and St. John’s has not won an NCAA tournament game in his lifetime. Actually it’s 22 years now since we beat Northern Arizona 61-56. Since then UCONN has won 3 championships, Nova 2 and Butler was the runner up twice and Georgetown made a Final Four. DePaul is the only other team not to win a game besides us. So every season that is my hope.
