Around the Big East

In an emergency situation you can always take the redshirt off like what Lavin did with Balamou though that was far from an emergency situation.

I think this kid is so raw that if we need serious minutes of him this year then CMA won’t be here for Keira’s 2nd year here, let alone his 5th
If you take the redshirt off during the big east portion of the schedule you miss the opportunity to get him some PT during the non conference part of the schedule against some lesser competition where presumably we win some “blowouts”.

He is the 13th man or a 14 man roster (including walk-on player Simpson) who is a project and needs development time. While in this day and age the chances of keeping a kid for five years is not high as stated in previous post, if our “big”s stay relatively healthy, how much time would Keita get?

While his possible redshirt might be new information, it should not be a surprise considering we redshirted Traore last year and Julian was originally supposed to redshirt his freshman year. This really is not a big deal.

If things and needs change, he can still play.

The thing about a 7’1 player, albeit very raw, is they bring something no one else does. There may be a one minute stretch where having that size could make the difference in a game. Maybe A guy gets hurt/foul trouble, or the other team just has an advantage we can’t seem to answer. Add that to the fact kids rarely stay in school 5 years, let alone at the same place, I think it would be worth it to have him available. A similarly raw recruit who doesn’t have such a unique size/ability, I would be on board with. Traore for example. If we had another 7 footer on the bench then yeah, it would be a no brainer.

On the glass is half full side; a raw 7'1" can also bring something else to the table in a one minute stretch: out of position, unneeded fouls and I did say foulS. This kid would be the last man off the bench and see minimum deer-in-the-headlights minutes at best.

Let him redshirt, build up his body and have a year of practice. If he decides to leave before his eligibility is up so be it. It can only mean that there are other players better than him taking his minutes.

Many reasons kids leave besides playing time.

I wasn’t a where Julian was to be redshirted. WOW

Hah, a kid leaving hardly only means that there are other platters better than him taking his minutes. Kids leave for all sorts of reasons.

He was going to go to prep school and Anderson convinced him to “prep” with us and redshirt while getting a full year of practice against D1 players. When he showed up for summer workouts that thought pretty much went out the window.

Here in Storrs and much of the high hopes with this UConn team rest on this guy. Jordan Hawkins set to make a jump. Talented wing will need to develop into go-to guy for the Huskies.

Key for me for this UConn team will be Tristen Newton. Put up big numbers at ECU; will need to run team and set guys up as much as anything else. If he averages 12 and 5, would be huge for the Huskies.

Really like the addition of Nahiem Alleyne for UConn. Veteran guard from Virginia Tech who can really space the court, and can also put it on the floor better than people think and create some opportunities for teammates. But biggest thing is he is a proven perimeter shooter.

There have to be a few guys to have high expectations, not just one :) So that dashed hopes don't hit so hard. Nothing against Husky, good guy.

The last few preseasons, there was a site out of Milwaukee that may have been associated with Marquette that provided preseason reviews of each Big East team, with a new one coming out each week going from bottom to top. I always found it an interesting read. Does anyone out there have/remember a link to that site?
