Around the Big East

McDermott is one of the Elite Coaches , not only in the BE but , overall .  The Creighton Program is  advancing almost to the level of Villanova and Gonzaga . His record is outstanding .  How does he do it ? And , we can’t ?  It’s a fair question .

How does he do it? He gets better players.  McDermott recruited more 4 star players over a few seasons than St. John's has over the past 10 years.  Nembhard, Kalkbrenner, Kaluma, Alexander. All ranked top 100 as high school seniors.  O'Connell, a transfer, was highly regarded out of high school.

McDermott is an elite coaching mind. No doubt about that.  But give him players ranked between 150 and 300 and he wouldn't be so elite. Not in the Big East at least.   The question I would ask is what does St. John's have to do to make it a destination, consistently, for top 100 players.  After you get the answer, implement the necessary changes.

He also showed up in the FBI transcripts regarding Justin Patton. Not saying it to get all high and mighty, just that it is something to consider. Creighton sells out a 17,000 arena every game. Stands to reason there is more money to throw around to recruits. I don't think it's a surprise they get guys.

(Note: Edited to take out the words "payments to" as I do not believe actual payments from Dawkins to Patton were uncovered)

Doug McDermott really put his father on the map. First team All-American, NCAA player of the year. (Although I fondly remember being at MSG when SJU beat him, with the fans shouting "over-rated"  at him.)

If I signed to play for Travis Steele and I found out I was going to be playing for Sean Miller I'd stay too.  In fact I would go so far as to say anyone who backs out was probably encouraged to do so.

Will see if he can reel back in Tyrell Ward who has de-committed.

Great run by Providence. Made adjustments, took lead in the 2nd half. Just too deep a hole dug. Credit to Kansas, they are solid. Ed Cooley did a great job this year.

When we played Kansas earlier this year, I felt as if their starting five was the most talented unit in the country.

For a good part of the season, Kansas was not playing like that, even though they were mostly winning.  Now, they are.

Sure, Providence beat them after we softened them up. /media/kunena/emoticons/tongue.png

Hopefully that injury for Moore is not bad but my head tells me he is done. Nova is such a quality program. Their sustained success is remarkable. They deserve so much credit for keeping the big east top of mind as a power conference since we shed the football programs. They single-handedly drove ncaa money to us with their winning.

Couldn’t agree more. They literally saved the conference when some of the big name teams left.  Without Nivas success over this last decade, the Big East would be relegated to the status of the A10. And they do it the Wright way. Bring in 4 star players , develop their players to conform to the system.

A plus for Friars per Rothstein

Ed Croswell tells me that he will use his additional year of eligibility and return to Providence next season.

Averaged 5.3 PPG and 4.7 RPG this past year for the Friars.
