Dan Hurley: “We’re a Top 25 program, we can’t have 7 or 8,000 people at the game — actually through the turnstiles, 7 or 8,000, not what we announce. We’ve got to get a big-time crowd. We’re a big-time program, we’ve got to have a big-time crowd.”

That's actually pretty interesting to me. I wonder what their issue is with attendance. This is the first time I've heard of UConn having attendance issues over the years.
My guess is not winning enough. Doubt women's program has that issue but they too may have that issue as they have not been as dominant as in the past.

Wonder if it has anything to do with that Covid thing I read about in the news.

When it comes to attendance everywhere, there is a Covid factor to consider this year. It's not my intent here to start a fight over what is reasonable or not. But in NYC you can't attend if unvaccinated and in a lot of places you can't attend unless masked. And there are also people who are still not interested in being at a crowded event - period.

All of this has to be a factor.

If Danny Hurley was the SJU coach and was winning I wouldn't hate it. And maybe he is a wonderful human being and just likes to hide it. But based on his public persona I can't think of a better match than this guy and his fans.

Happiness for me today would be Posh pulling a Willis Reed, Gillespie too sore to go full steam, Posh & Dylan physically intimidating mediocre Arcidiacano and Soriano with help playing Nova developing big man Eric Reed to a draw, Moore rusty and Johnny close win of course

Also, UConn losing to Marquette tonight infuriating ever whining Hurley and creating more fan dismay & Huskies pressure coming to to MSG with less of their drunken, obnoxious mob to be beaten Sunday by SJ.

I can dream :)

Sounds good. I’d only add that the Marquette win in triple OT. /media/kunena/emoticons/smile.png

Not sure how many games they play at Civic Center, but their students don't like to travel there.  Some fans think all games should be played on campus.

The problem with the Civic Center is, it's a 30+ minute drive from the Storrs campus. So with the lack of transportation in the area, it's not very easy to get to coming from campus. I think the reason they still play so many games there, is because UConn has become among the main sporting attractions for CT residents who have no pro teams to root for. So they cater to those people with games off campus, and the students with the games on campus.

Agree 100%. Plus the night life in Hartford is not much of an attraction,

Cow tipping is more of a spring sport. Too much snow on the ground right now.

UConn has been having trouble scoring recently, but look good tonight, over M’Q 46-36 at the half

May be heresy here, but as competitive the Big East is I really don’t see any team doing damage in the Dance. Flag Ship Nova to me is well coached team, but lacks depth and does not have usual talent level to make a run. Providence is having great season, but never does much in Dance, but perhaps their depth, solid big and good guard cadre can get them  to a Sweet 16. Net of that I just don’t see a team to keep an eye on in NCAA T.

I agree. I don’t see a team from the Big East getting to a Elite 8 this year. Depending on the seedings, we might not have a Sweet 16 team. The SEC, PAC12 and BIG 10 are all stocked with Elite 8 power teams.

Makes sense to me and is consistent to what the Big East has evolved into post football schools (besides Villanova.) An extremely balanced league with a lot of very good programs top-to-bottom but no great teams.

Still think the trio Of Nova, uconn, and Hall( if they make it) have the best chance to advance in the tourney. Size and defense for Uconn and SH. Nova being nova. Don’t trust Marquette bouncing back from their inevitable dip. Just my opinion.

Although the league is much stronger than last year, it oddly enough is in a similar position for NCAA purposes if you think of "NCAA" in a vacuum.  You figure UConn has the most potential talent and is the best bet to make a deep-ish run.  You know Nova will execute, but the high-level talent isn't there and they don't have any size outside of Dixon who's much improved but still not a real threat.  The Hall, Providence and X can give people trouble, but can also get washed out early.

So OK if you look at it that way, yes, nobody in the league strikes you as a "deep run" team - unless of course somebody pulls a Syracuse and gets hot at the right time.

On the other hand, if you then look at the ACC and the Big 10, well the ACC is flat atrocious and the top 5 in the Big East would probably fall somewhere between 3 and 8 in the Big 10, so that's kind of a wash.  And while the PAC-12, the SEC, and the Big 12 have some really good teams, those leagues are also kind of top heavy.

So I think it may come down to seeding.  If the Big East is seeded fairly then there are probably only 10-12 schools in the country that deserve higher seeds.  So if BE has 5 teams with 4 or 5 seeds - which it should, they place most of those in the Sweet 16 and by odds get one to the Elite 8.

Beyond that, I don't think the league is going to have a Final 4 team, no.

N.B.:  I left out Marquette, I suppose I would put them in with X, Providence and the Hall as a team that could beat anybody or lose to anybody in the NCAA tournament.  And Shaka Smart has already demonstrated that he can both beat anybody (VCU) and lose to anybody (Texas) so I don't know what to make of that.

But with a half dozen teams that should (by rights) have seeds in the 4-5 range (maybe a 3 and a 6 on the edges), the league should have decent odds of getting 3 teams to the Sweet 16 and maybe one to the Elite 8.

Of course who knows what the actual seeds will be but both KenPom and the NET rankings fail my eye test as reliable barometers of who's good.  But they become self-fulfilling prophecies when they are used for seeding and create favorable matchups that reinforce their superficial validity.  But that's a different conversation except to the extent it relates to "KenPom hoses the Big East and vastly overrates certain other conferences and gee I wonder why THAT is."

When was the last time DePaul was an 8 point favorite in a Big East game, like they are tonight against Georgetown?

Maybe when they played us at home, Mullin's first year?  Before that, when?  Never?
