Around the Big East

Anyone know why Gillespie and Moore are not playing for Nova?  At least Gillespie was in for most of the game.

Gillespie injured his ankle like Posh late in the game and told Wright he was unable to continue.  Like Posh, we will have to wait and see concerning Tuesday nights game.

Depaul's coach is outstanding.  Paid his dues and now is turning around depaul.  No one will want to see them in the Big East tourney.

If he can recruit, Depaul is going to be a top team in the big east.

The big east is probably a 6-7 bid league this year, however outside of Providence, Nova, and Marquette those other 3-4 spots are up for grabs in these remaining 6-8 games (depending on the team)

-Creighton has lost 3 of their last 4.  Their NET has went from the 50's to in the 70's.
-UConn has lot 2 in a row.
-Xavier has lost 3 of their last 5 and just lost at home to a DePaul team that was missing 2 of their best players.
-Seton hall was looking shaky until their game against Creighton, had lost 2 in a row before barely beating a bad Georgetown team.

When you look at St. John's remaining schedule, 8 games in regular season with 5 of them being home games.  And of the road games is against DePaul.

They hold the keys to their own destiny, win 4 out of your remaining 5 of your home games, and beat DePaul on the road, if they do that, I think they are in the mix.

Jay Wright says Collin Gillespie needs x-rays on his right ankle.
While I wouldn’t mind him missing Tuesday. I hope it’s not serious.

Other than Georgetown (lost 10) and PC (won 6) no one in the Big East currently has a longer winning or losing streak than 2 games. Just an indication of how competitive the league is.

And I wouldn’t fear facing Providence again in the BET….good job by Cooley but we should have beaten them twice

Still 5 teams in the AP Top 25! Great that our UConn game will be ranked on Sunday.

#11 Providence
#15 Villanova
#18 Marquette
#24 UConn
#25 Xavier

Top 15 and top 25 games at home this week, doesn't get much better than that.

 Nice spot for Cooley to be in obviously;

PC is going to “do what it needs to do” to ensure that Ed Cooley remains its head coach well beyond his current agreement, Providence AD Bob Driscoll told College Hoops Today on Monday.“He’s done an amazing job,” Driscoll said of Cooley, whose led the Friars to a 20-2 start through 22 games.

“It’s a priority to get something done. We’re going to do what we need to do to make sure that happens and he remains our coach.”Cooley received a new contract in excess of three million dollars annually after he was a candidate for the head coaching vacancy at Michigan in 2019. He’s been heavily linked to the current openings at both Maryland and Louisville, according to multiple sources.

The Big East has done an excellent job retaining coaches these past few years- better than the average Power conference given we haven't lost anyone and Marquette poached Shaka from Texas. Meanwhile various Power teams lost their coaches to other Power teams, such as Texas Tech and Virginia Tech to Texas and Texas A&M.

I really hope PC keeps Cooley, but if they don't hopefully we don't get any "Big East can't hang with Power conferences" takes that we've seen previously (Buzz year 1, Butler/Xavier a few years ago). PC is the smallest college in the conference (similar to teams like Texas Tech and Virginia Tech), it wouldn't be the same as Villanova, UConn or Georgetown (when they're winning) getting poached.

Interesting. After losing at home to DePaul, I thought for sure X would have dropped out of the top 25. And I really thought PC would have been in the top 10. They only missed by one spot.

4 years ago today STJ had a win vs. #1 on the road coming off a win vs.  #4 at home.  That was a pretty good week (in an otherwise lost season).

Dan Hurley: “We’re a Top 25 program, we can’t have 7 or 8,000 people at the game — actually through the turnstiles, 7 or 8,000, not what we announce. We’ve got to get a big-time crowd. We’re a big-time program, we’ve got to have a big-time crowd.”

I thought UConn would drop out as well, they lost two games last week.

That's actually pretty interesting to me. I wonder what their issue is with attendance. This is the first time I've heard of UConn having attendance issues over the years.
