Around the Big East 19/20

Moose- the first 4 games between the BE/BXII (played prior to last night) don't count towards this challenge. Unlike the Gavitt Games, which come before nearly everyone plays their first real opponent, these games occur after we've already played 4 games with the conference. Also they're spread out over the course of a few weeks rather than 1 week.

Regardless, we're now 2-0 in the challenge and 5-1 overall vs the BXII. Excellent results!

As for last night, really happy to see Georgetown and DePaul pull off those big time wins. Would've been very happy with 4-1, but 5-0 is huge.
OK so what you're saying is the BE/BXII games that were not part of the BE/BXII Challenge games don't count into the BE/BXII Challenge results. But how about the mutual opponents of BE/BXII teams. Do those count into the results? ;)
Lol, in my book I'd put us as 5-1 vs the Big XII since all the games count the same. For the Gavitt Games I focus on the record for that alone, given that all our other games up to that point (end of the first week) are cupcakes games. The Big East vs Big XII challenge ends on December 22 (Xavier @ TCU), so keeping a tally when we play lots of other Power teams during that long stretch (such as us vs Arizona) seems kind of pointless. Still, nice that we're off to a 2-0 "start", though.

Do BE rules bar us from persuing him?
He never signed, so he's free to commit to any Big East team. Watch out for Michigan with Williams.
Notre Dame also.

Evan Daniels

In the first 69 games of Charlie Moore's career he tossed out 164 assists. In nine games this year at DePaul he's already recorded 63. 35 in last 3 games. Significantly improved in every statistical category from first two seasons.
I like a lot of what I've seen this season and I tend toward optimism especially early season. Realistically however we don't matchup well with any team in the BE and we don't have a reliable scorer nor a lock down defender. Our most reliable player is a very surprising freshman and our senior team leader is foul prone and has disappeared for multi-game stretches. We don't make free throws. Pretty hard to see even a single Big East win at this point.
Hard to see a single win? Damn I disagree completely. Think as a whole a lot are undervaluing our start. 3 Through 10 we have to be way better than everyone expected. Top 2 have been on and off but I’d be more worried if it was other way around.
Also, BE is talented but let’s not pretend they havnt had struggles with teams they shouldn’t necessarily struggle with. Is there a team in the BE we really think is unbeatable on our home court? I don’t see one.

Friday, December 6th:

7:00 PM - Providence (42.4%) at Rhode Island - ESPN2

Kicks off a nice slate of games for Big East teams this weekend.

Providence could really use a win tonight. It's been a rough ride. Coming into the season I really thought they had a chance to finish top 3 or 4 in the Big East.

Looking at the remaining games in the non-con they have Rhody, Stonybrook, Florida and Texas. With how bad they've looked it's not inconceivable they come into Big East play with a losing record and no notable wins. There's plenty of season left and I think they have a talented enough roster to turn it around but they're digging themselves a pretty big hole for an at-large bid. If they don't get it together now they'll need to either dominate in conference or go on a Kemba-like run in the Big East tournament.

I notice that the other Big East schools all have played or are going to play an out-of-conference rival game. We don't seem to have one. Syracuse would fit that role, but they decided they don't want to play us, since we beat them three years in a row. Notre Dame would be a draw, as would Iona, to a lesser degree. Fordham used to be our main rival in the late sixties and seventies, but that program has faded lately. Any thoughts?

URI beating the Friars by 11 early in the second half.
Friars having a very tough time against a 5-3 Rams team. Not very impressive so far.

Friars are the most underperforming team in the league.

Friars loosing by 15 with 27 seconds left. The Rams 5 10 pg Fats Russell is absolutely great. He is an outstanding player. Huge win for the Rams for in state bragging rights.

Goes to show how important a good Pg is. We are lucky to have Posh coming on board. He’s gonna be great for us.

Whatever happens this year it should be a safe bet that SJU should avoid the basement because if anyone besides Providence finishes in last place it would be a minor miracle.

Long season, I bet they salvage it.

I think we are going to be better than the no-win estimations I’ve read here. We aren’t the most talented team but not totally devoid of talent. We have 2 very good scorers back. We also have our best frontcourt in years, albeit young but still missing our center. In addition, we are deep and in shape and our coaching is the best I’ve personally seen in a very long time. It’s a style that suits us.

Will we be able to overcome our overall lack of offensive punch, youth and a Pg I don’t know? That said I have more confidence in this coach that I’ve had in quite a few prior, to have them as prepared as possible.

Our talent will get better over next few years, but I’m not ready to concede anything yet. We likely won’t win big, but I think we can compete for mid-pack somewhere.

I think we're gonna win a few games in conference. I have no idea how few. Right now I'd guess 5 or 6 but interested to see how we do over these last 4 non-con games. Bigger tests in West Virginia and Arizona but even in btwn those, Brown & Albany will be two of the better "cupcakes" we play (still would be bad to lose to either obviously) If they can find a way to go 3-1 I'll be really happy.

I get the sense that we're annoying to play. That's a good thing. If you're lazy on the boards, we'll out work you, we're always going to push the ball up, we're pesky and guard the ball handler all 94 feet. We move the ball around and tire out defenses. Our guys play very hard. They're a very easy team to root for because the effort is obvious. I think we'll catch some teams sleeping and frustrate others enough to put ourselves in positions to win some games.

That fact seems completely lost on some many posters.

Their fan board wants Cooley's head. Every fan base is crazy and has unrealistic expectations. A small school in the NE winning 20 a year with an NCAA run is the correct ceiling for them.

Cooley will turn lemons into lemonade. Maybe a down year for them, but he is not finishing last.
