Around the Big East 19/20
One of the big reasons Seton Hall finally broke through last year was because A) they had a guy who could get you practically 22 PPG with plenty of 30+, showed up for big moments, and stayed on the court. And also B ) they had REAL big men who were 7 footers. Hard to win consistently with no true bigs at this level.
I thought seton Hall should have been much better then they were last year and I had them as an early exit in the tournament. powell was never the same after that concussion.

Not only did Gonzaga & Baylor thrive without big recruiting classes, they spent most of the year in the top 5 and both spent time as #1. Proof positive that highly ranked recruits aren't everything.

Per Corey Evans

In the first of what could be similar decisions to come, Georgetown bound guard Tyler Beard will take a prep year at Hargrave Military this year & enroll at the Big East program in the fall of 2021 due to the uncertainty related to the ongoing pandemic.

Maybe I'm missing something, but this move makes little sense to me. If college basketball is shut down, it would stand to reason that Hargrave wouldn't be playing basketball either. So instead of getting a year of college in, he instead opted for 13th grade.

Sounds like some spin going on here. Might not have the grades or be eligible for GTown so blaming it on the pandemic. That’s my guess

Well LJSA,

I did some poking around the Georgetown message boards to get their takes on this one.

A lot of guys expect to never see him play for the Hoyas.

Another poster said that other top schools recruiting him backed off apparently because of grades. So connecting the dots here might point to a grade thing.

Other posters speculated he’d be doing this because his family doesn’t feel safe with him away from home and on a college campus. But this JUCO he’s going to is in Virginia. He’s from Chicago.

Quote from one Hoya fan who basically came to the same conclusion as us:

“I know we would like to believe everything we read but the Covid excuse doesn't make much sense. He wasn't going to come out and say I didn't qualify. If him and his family were really worried about Covid they wouldn't be sending him 800 miles away to the middle of nowhere VA. The chances that Hargrave plays basketball and we don't is slim to none and that is certainly not a reason to go to prep. He wouldn't lose a year of eligibility if there is no season.”

I’d put a lot of money on it being a grade/qualifying thing

Good job!

But bad job by Ewing -- if grades were an issue, it was going to be tough to get him in the door there.

I thought it had been announced that most everyone would be a qualifier this year because of the covid situation.

SATs were waived but then total formula net of test scores was recalibrated I believe. Much easier in any event.

They also had a veteran team. It's nice to have big name young pups but there's something to be said for experience and having guys that have played together for a good amount of time
Definitely a big factor. The last 3 "good" (NCAA Tourney) STJ teams were all led by Jrs and SRs with only LJ and Rysheed being major underclassmen contributors/starters.

Butler add the third member to its 2021 class tonight with local forward DJ Hughes. Fits Bulldogs versatile, combo forward role well. Brings toughness and versatility to the Big East bunch.

Breaking: 4-star Class of 2021 prospect Cesare Edwards has announced his commitment to Xavier. Travis Steele picks up a 6-foot-10 power forward, one who fits the physical identity of the Musketeers. Clemson, Florida, Florida State and others were in on him. Hartville, SC native

Big get for X! 2021 rankings...

#3 Nova
#5 DePaul
#11 Butler
#39 Xavier
#40 Creighton
#43 Seton Hall

Rankings stop at #51.

St. John's:
Lavin
2011: #7 (1st in Big East)
2012: #33 (5th in Big East)
2013: #88 (7th in Big East) - 1 person class with Jordan
2014: #115 (10th in Big East)
Mullin
2015: #26 (2nd in Big East)
2016: #24 (2nd in Big East)
2017: #48 (7th in Big East)
2018: #46 (5th in Big East)
CMA
2019: #159 (10th in Big East)
2020: #78 (7th in Big East, but some teams like Nova have empty classes due to full rosters)
2021: Empty

Keep in mind that by October of this year 90%+ of 2021 4/5 star recruits will already be committed. I don't want to sound impatient, but I haven't heard any positive momentum with any 2021 recruits and time is running out. We have fallen way behind the rest of the Big East during this 3 year stretch.

I know numbers aren't everything, but does anyone expect us to land a top recruit this class? Is there any reason for optimism?

I don’t really think we are behind with the 21’ class at this point: visits and all types of things have been postponed with Covid. I think we will still are early signings but I bet quite a few commits are deferred and postponed as well. Can’t compare to last year’s timing. As far as who we are in good shape with, only time will tell. This staff keeps stuff close to the vest. I’m hoping this is a year we can make a real impact, landing several freshmen, not just jucos. Last year remember, we landed Posh without much warning as well.

Time will tell as to how fast kids in the Class of 2021 will commit in basketball, but I can tell you that, in football, the kids in the Class of 2021 seem to be committing much earlier than usual.

Being a part time New Yorker and part time Floridian, I can tell you that the two college football teams that I follow (Rutgers and Miami) have many more commits for next year than they would normally have at this time

Pleased Mike Anderson is our HC & appreciate the work ethic and family culture he has built in short order. That said, Hurley, a wired and obnoxious type, is a 24/7 recruiter. He and Kimani are a formidable duo in that regard. Mike and staff imo must meet this challenge going head to head with UConn for many targets going forward.

To truly contend in Big East, attracting talent and player development are keys. This staff can do the latter for sure and over the next few recruiting cycles imo must impress on the former. “Go get em” staff!

CMA has recruited well and won everywhere he’s been. I don’t expect the situation to be any different now. I like the guys he’s brought in this year and we still have one scholarship to fill. CMA will get quality kids that fit his system. I’m not too worried about rankings.
